Tim Russert, NBC journalist and political heavyweight host of "Meet the Press," has died after collapsing at NBC's Washington news bureau, a source said. He was 58 years old.
Russert, who rose from the inside world of politics where he was former New York Gov. Mario Cuomo's press secretary and one-time chief of staff to the late Sen. Daniel Patrick Moynihan, was able to successfully cross over to political journalism and rise to become one of its leading lights.
In his role as host of the seminal Sunday morning political program "Meet the Press" - which he took over in 1991 - he became renowned for his hard-nosed interviews where he frequently cornered some of Washington's cagiest political figures with tough questions.
Russert joined NBC News in 1984. In April 1985, he supervised the live broadcasts of the Today program from Rome, negotiating and arranging an appearance by Pope John Paul II - a first for American television. In 1986 and 1987 Russert led NBC News weeklong broadcasts from South America, Australia and China.
In 2008, Time Magazine named him one of the world's 100 most influential people.

| Anyone hear about Tim Russert dying? Posted: 6/13/2008 1:02:34 PM | | He will be missed. I met him once in Las Vegas and we talked for about 10 minutes at Mandalay. Unlike Tom Brokow and Brian Williams, he was never a mouthpiece for the DNC. He was not shy of favoring certain sports teams. Which makes for a real man. | |

| Anyone hear about Tim Russert dying? Posted: 6/13/2008 1:12:01 PM | | Yes he's died. Terrible. Very sad story. He seemed like a really nice guy. I liked watching him on Meet the Press from time to time. Also he was on the younger side for this kind of thing but then he looked to me frankly like the type of guy who had quite high blood pressure (often quite reddish in the face and that sort of thing). I remember thinking that about him when I'd see him on TV. They speculate massive coronary as the cause; I'm not sure but I could have sworn I'd heard he had had some sort of heart attack at an earlier time as well. Well, I'm sure it will be in the news if that was the case. | |

He was interesting to watch, and he will be missed. He was one of those guys I could agree AND disagree with, and still respect.
I guess it's just another reminder of what John Lennon once sang "Life is what happens to you while you're busy making other plans."

| Anyone hear about Tim Russert dying? Posted: 6/13/2008 6:30:19 PM | WASHINGTON - Tim Russert, a political lifer who made a TV career of his passion with unrelenting questioning of the powerful and influential, died of a heart attack Friday in the midst of a presidential campaign he'd covered with trademark intensity. Praise poured in from the biggest names in politics, some recalling their own meltdown moments on his hot seat.
Rest in Peace you left a legacy to be proud of and were one of the few in the media respected by both sides of the political spectrum.

| Anyone hear about Tim Russert dying? Posted: 6/13/2008 10:09:42 PM | "....when he talked I felt comfortable...." Sheeesh byrd, I've been trying to figure out what to say all day. That's it exactly! He wasn't one of the 'pretty boys' that was there for the obvious cosmetic reasons and he didn't scream either. Thanks for that, man. | |

| Anyone hear about Tim Russert dying? Posted: 6/13/2008 10:37:51 PM | I feel bad for his family but he sold his soul to the propagandists. I can only hope he found absolution knowing what his profession has done to the population. Why does one man get this adoration when he helped to kill over a million iraqi's and over 4000 american soldiers? You people really need to re-evaluate your priorities and quick !
Hey if it was Britney Spears you all be thinking it was Princess Diana . Who cares about the people dying everyday who get ZERO recognition and those who actually did something ?
This pisses me off. A propaganda shill dies and it's more important than thousands of soldiers ? The world is a mess .

| Anyone hear about Tim Russert dying? Posted: 6/14/2008 3:11:51 PM | | My Sunday mornings will not be the same...I thoroughly enjoyed Tim Russert's impartial yet fascinating view on the news...and today ran over to give my dad a hug for fathers day to tell him that I loved him...a very poignant reminder to stop, and tell those that we love that we love them every single day we can. | |

Posted: 6/14/2008 3:24:03 PM | So sorry to hear of his death--but he was so fortunate to have a tremendous love for his family, and got to do what he seemed to love as well--life doesn't get better than that--but what a shocker--just when you think people are immortal----

| Tim Russert 1950-2008 Posted: 6/14/2008 10:11:38 PM | Another good one, dying young. Smart guy, and you could tell he'd done his homework each week. He so could have helped his nation during this election. Such a tragic loss.

| Tim Russert 1950-2008 Posted: 6/15/2008 7:29:22 AM | The thing that really hit home with me with the passing of Tim Russert was what a really good man he was - he once said: "The best exercise for the human heart is to bend down and pick someone else up"
It doesn't get any kinder or easier than that.
God bless Tim and his family

| Tim Russert 1950-2008 Posted: 6/15/2008 2:10:19 PM | I heard the story last night, he was sitting next to his dad, "Big Russ," talking about how much he wanted a name brand baseball glove. His dad bought him one, but it was a generic one, all his dad could afford on his meager income. He was asked about his punishment for the selfish act. (paraphrasing) I didn't need one, seeing my dad walk away with his head down was all the punishment I needed. . . Then he looked over at his dad and said I'm sorry.
He was a brilliant and fair man. His questions were tough and his guests respected him.
Politics will never be the same. . . He was irreplacable!
