| Bests of Detroit? Posted: 6/15/2008 1:26:51 AM | I was in the Red Coat Tavern in Royal Oak a while back when my buddy and I started debating whether or not they had the best burger in town or not. Other diners overheard us and everyone started chiming in about what they thought was the best burger, pizza, barbecue, and everything else you can think of. Anyone want to list their personal favorites? List anything you want. Here is my short list.
Best burger--Toss up. Red Coat and Chesleys in Lincoln Park.
Best pizza--I haven't had it in years, but the Red Devil in Detroit used to have the best pizza I ever had anywhere. The Green Lantern Tavern in Madison Heights is a very close second.
Barbecue---Slow's in Detroit
Onion Rings---Red Coat Tavern
Looking forward to your nominations.

|
| Bests of Detroit? Posted: 6/15/2008 8:58:18 AM | Best Philly Cheesesteak Sub - Penn Station (Rochester and Westland). No onions for mine though please.
Best Rib Dinner (w/broasted Shack potatoes) - Chicken Shack (Rochester, Westland, lots of other areas). Rib Rack seems like it's the same place to me, just has a different name.
Best Steak By The Ounce (and probably the only place for steak by the ounce) - Capers (near Mt Clemens and there is another one off Gratiot south of I-696 I believe)
Best Roast Beef Sammich - Jimmy Dee's (near Mt Clemens). They are also known for being Home to the best legendary Corned Beef Reuben.. but I'm not into Reubens.
Best Mexican - Mexican Village (Utica)
Best Pizza - Pizza Papalis (used to be one in Rochester Hills but it closed; not sure where all else they are now)
Best AUCE Crab Legs - Harbor House (there are a couple of locations - Roseville/Warren and Sylvan Lake). Also Bakers of Milford on Monday and Wednesdays!
Best Dinner Rolls - Texas Roadhouse, and Red Lobster's Cheddar Bay Biscuits
Best Italian - Antonio Cucina (Farmington Hills and Canton)
I'm also available for lunch/dinner date so... contact me now to avoid the rush!!

| Bests of Detroit? Posted: 6/15/2008 1:03:56 PM | I have always heard that Miller's Bar had the best burgers in town. A couple of friends of mine went over there not long ago and were not impressed. I have never been there but would still like to see for myself. I was talking to a guy at a place in Royal Oak and mentioned that I was from Wyandotte, and he told me the best burger he ever had was at a place in Wyandotte called the Speedboat Inn. I know where it is, but I've never been there either...lol.
Best Mexican--I'll go with Mexican Village in Detroit, though Los Galenes is close.
Best Philly Cheesesteak--Joey's Cheesesteaks in Southgate. The people who own it are actually from Philly. I have sent people from the Philadelphia area there and they were impressed. They said it was the only authentic cheesesteak they have had in Michigan. Incidentally, Joeys ships all their stuff in from Philly and they have these hard crusted buns for their hoagies that are unlike anything I have had in Michigan. Hard on the outside, soft on the inside. Delicious.

| Bests of Detroit? Posted: 6/16/2008 5:33:09 PM | Redcoat on Woodward Best burgers period, my vote there. Everything best at Redcoat.
Millers used to be best burger, not anymore... they cheapened up. Nick's Scoreboard, best burger and a beer for $3 Hooters has great ham and cheese sandwich Bob Evans, best breakfasts Luigi's, Mt.Clemens, best grilled salmon

| Bests of Detroit? Posted: 6/16/2008 5:55:14 PM | I love Hooters for their hot wings, too! | |
|
| Bests of Detroit? Posted: 6/16/2008 10:03:18 PM | I'm with you Bad Mustang. Everything is good at the RedCoat. That is why I drive across town to go there. Love the Scotch Eggs.
Also would agree with you on Bob Evans breakfasts. Everyone always talks about Cracker Barrells breakfasts, but I never thought they could hold a candle to Bob Evans.
|
| Bests of Detroit? Posted: 6/17/2008 5:04:59 AM | Cracker Barrel is the new Wrinkle Ranch replacing an old Bob Evans competitor. Although the breakfast casserole is pretty good, I will eat there if Bob Evans isn't readily available on a road trip.
We should plan a POF breakfast sometime at B.E. That might be fun for us old timers.

| Bests of Detroit? Posted: 6/17/2008 5:06:33 AM | LHL, I agree the wings are really good there.... I understand the spicy breasts aren't bad either. | |
|
| Bests of Detroit? Posted: 6/20/2008 3:55:46 PM | Back in the 80s I lived in Dearborn for a while and I did attend a Miller bar they did have excellent hamburgers but I haven't been there in a long time. Personally I like the hot wings at Buffalo wild wings I stopped there often. Darin | |
|
| Bests of Detroit? Posted: 6/21/2008 12:42:19 AM | I always have to get the Jamaican Jerk sauce on my wings at Buffalo Wild Wings.
Best coffee--I would take Dunkin Donuts coffee over Starbucks or any of the other fancy places.
Incidentally, the best iced tea I ever had in my life was at the old Bill Knapps restaurant. I took a girl to Cranbrook and we walked around and stopped at Knapps for something to drink. I could not believe how good it was. I wanted to sit there an order a gallon of it, but suspecting this girl was not the indulgent type that I am, I left it at 2 glasses. Never did get back there to see if it was a fluke or not, then they closed all their restaurants.

| Bests of Detroit? Posted: 6/22/2008 9:32:48 AM | It was nice running into you too Bad Mustang. Maybe we should hold a POF event at the Redcoat?
What was that you called Bill Knapps? Was it Bill Gramps? LOL.
|
| Bests of Detroit? Posted: 6/22/2008 10:21:35 AM | | No, the term some people used for Bill Knapps back then was Wrinkle Ranch, which... if you were in your 30's at the time, seemed appropriate.... And now, 30 years later? Here we all are, lol.. | |
|
| Bests of Detroit? Posted: 6/22/2008 4:46:43 PM | | Yeah, we would fit right in at Bill Knapps now. They should have stayed in business. With all the baby boomers turning into seniors, Knapps would have been the "In" spot. | |
|
| Bests of Detroit? Posted: 6/23/2008 6:21:34 AM | RD, perhaps we could start our own restaurant biz and tie in the S.E. Michigan POF crowd. "Wrinkle Ranch" Deluxe slop burgers, fries, and extra lite beer for $5, with your AARP discount if you say Lighthouse Lady sent me here... finger lickin' good! Kinda has a catchy ring to it doesn't it? | |
|
| Bests of Detroit? Posted: 6/23/2008 7:15:27 PM | | LOL...you're killing me. We could offer Prilosec, alka-seltzer and viagra as sides. | |
|
| Bests of Detroit? Posted: 6/24/2008 10:55:48 AM | I moved from Detroit to Southern Cal. No Cracker Barrel, Bob Evans, and especially no Tim Horton`s-------and they don`t know how to make a pizza out here-period. I also used to love all the little ethnic places, especially the Middle Eastern and Indian spots. Oh, the Italian ain`t too grand out here either. Overall, food isn`t too good in the restaurants, more into the gym and fitness thing, not comfort food. Don`t know what you are missing until it`s gone. Oh, no little Greek Coney Island breakfast joints out here either. 2 eggs with meat, toast, and hash browns 9.95 at cheapest if you can even find a place open for breakfast. I guess it is good. You need to stay alot skinnier here to even get a date, so you can`t eat anyways. You certainly aren`t tempted by the restaurants unless you want to eat tacos 24-7. Oh well! Comfort food doesn`t sit too well at 115 degrees, what it has been lately. | |
