| Lake Allatoona and camping 7/12 Posted: 6/17/2008 8:37:22 PM | This is a trip to Lake Allatoona and the surrounding Red Top Mountain State Park.
Some things to do at the park: swimming Allatoona dam/overlook miniature golf (there is a course at the park) hiking trails sports such as frisbee, dodgeball, horseshoes, volleyball (we'd need to bring our own gear for these if anyone has it). We can find a place to cook/have a picnic at the park; there are grills and tables. Everyone can bring whatever food they want.
There is information online about the lake and the park; web addresses may be blocked from this posting, so do a search. Cartersville and Bartow County Convention and Visitors' Bureau website has information as well. The park is located near exit #285 of I-75. I won't place directions here since people are coming from different locations, so you can get them from Mapquest or the park's website. Phone number of the park is 770-975-4226.
Parking is $3 per day.
Anyone who wants to can camp. There is a campsite in the park, but it is somewhat expensive. The Cartersville KOA campground looks like a good option. Tent sites there are $30. If you don't have a tent/RV, there is a cabin to rent at the campground and holds about 5 people. If you want to stay there, it would be a good idea to reserve it (there's only one available). There aren't many campsites in the area which rent cabins. It is $9/person provided there are 5 people. If it turns out that we need more space, we'll have to stay at a cabin in the park, but it is more expensive, probably about $30. RV sites vary in price. The KOA website has a map/directions to the campground, but you would take exit 296 from I-75. Tentatively let's plan for the KOA campground unless anyone objects. If you want to camp, you should probably reserve a site, and you can do that at the KOA website or call them at 770-382-7330.
You can bring firewood, but I imagine it will be available nearby.
Let's plan to meet around 5:00 on Sat. 7/12 at Red Top Mountain state park at the visitor's center (there will be signs for it). You can show up earlier and meet with the group at 5:00, or whatever you want to do. I'll post my cell phone # later so that latecomers can contact me and find out where the group is. We had a problem at a previous event where members of the group weren't able to find each other, so this should help.
If anyone has questions you can post them. By the way, my previous user name was Jeff1500. Take care!

| Lake Allatoona and camping 7/12 Posted: 6/18/2008 9:08:21 AM | How far is the KOA campsite from the state park? If they are within walking distance I will go..I just don't want to be partying from 5 on and then have to drive to a camp ground.. Are you renting a shelter? Doing dinner? Sorry if you already addressed this and I missed it
Looks like fun! | |

| Lake Allatoona and camping 7/12 Posted: 6/20/2008 11:55:37 PM | I reserved the cabin, which can fit 4 (5 would be a little crowded but could work). Anyone who wants to stay in it, let me know.
Dolphinlover, it's a state park, so I don't know if alcohol is allowed. I can check into it. There are shelters at the park we may be able to use, but none are reserved. I can check into this too. We can cook there if you bring food (but we don't have to); there are grills and tables. The campground is about 12 miles from the park.
Capndavetoona, you can bring a boat if you want. There are nearby places which have docks. I'm not sure if you can keep it at the park overnight.

| Lake Allatoona and camping 7/12 Posted: 6/22/2008 6:15:02 PM | Jeff, Have you tried a group rate on the camping? Just an open tought. Could you let us know about the possible restrictions on alcohol, (I get cranky if there is no beer with the brats, just kidding) Great idea.
Looking forward to meeting all of you.

| Lake Allatoona and camping 7/12 Posted: 6/30/2008 8:54:20 PM | Hey, can one of the ladies do me a favor and send a quick message to Blip42 to let him know about this event? I can't send him a message since I'm a guy.
Also, we still need people to bring sports gear if we are going to play any games: volleyball would be nice if someone has a net, and whatever else. Maybe a soccer or volleyball? I have a frisbee. Thanks!

| Lake Allatoona and camping 7/12 Posted: 7/1/2008 11:12:43 PM | they may SAY we can't have alcohol...but if we BEHAVE and don't act like fools we can have our drinks-----put in regular glasses or mix em up in your soda cans! I've been to many state parks and drank all day, the trick was not making myself obvious and behaving myself! so who's bringing the bourbon besides me?? | |

| Lake Allatoona and camping 7/12 Posted: 7/2/2008 11:14:44 AM | I live in Cartersville, and we camp out at Red Top quite often. It isnt expensive at all...it is $16-20 per tent site (20 for power and water), and $24 for RV sites. The KOA is roughly 12 or so miles from Red Top. The best bet is to get a site at Red Top. It is a very nice campgroud, very clean, and most sites are right on or near the lake.
I made my reservation for a tent site today...and they had 9 left with power and water for the 12th :-)
Can't wait to meet you all

| Lake Allatoona and camping 7/12 Posted: 7/2/2008 11:37:31 PM | The town is Cartersville, the best bet would be to mapquest Red Top Mountain Rd in Cartersville. It is located right off I-75 on exit 285, once you cross the lake you enter the park and the campground is on the right. It has plenty of signage in the park..you wont get lost.
