camping essentials for us virgin campers, with a rough guide to decent make/cost etc. Nothing worse than turning up to find your £5.99 tent from Netto is just 2 poles and a roll of cling film.
I was a virgin onthe first meet, although I managed to hide my *ahem* lack very easily, simply take a car and then put everything you own in it and voila! You look like a seasoned experienced camper...

Any chance of an experienced camper posting a list of camping essentials for us virgin campers, with a rough guide to decent make/cost etc. Nothing worse than turning up to find your £5.99 tent from Netto is just 2 poles and a roll of cling film.
OK - well I'm not absolutetly au fait ... but here goes. You need a waterproof tent with ground sheet - Asda, Tesco, Argos etc, fine ... obviously up to you how big you want. (I have a large one because I stole it from a dodgy geezer I had a date with that tried to rip me off for £15 ... but that's another story... )
Blow up mattress I'd personall say a must. Unless your dead hard. (Someone will have a pump.) Sleeping bag. (I personally hate the "mummy" type, taper tighter towards the feet - very restricting! I'd get a double!)
LOTS AND LOTS OF WARM CLOTHES, BLANKETS!!!
Worst mistake Vimpers (Virgin campers. & they whimper alot) make - they don't bring enough warm stuff, & it's very miserable being cold!!!
Chair for round the camp fire!
Wood- coal- slow burning log things, all appreciated for the fire!
Camping stove & kettle, or, easier still - buy one of the Alpha males that drag along all & sundry a pint for the use or their gas! ( I can be always bought by copious amounts of tea in the morning or red wine at night. Not the other way round though definately. Absolving responsibility of the Lister from Yam Yam & everyone else for even a short while will gain you no end of brownie points & use of gas bottles )
Did I mention warm clothes.
Umberella or water proof jacket.
Anti - stingy bitey stuff.
Cup, knife fork spoon, plate.
Bog roll.
Scouse translation book.
Ummm... can't think of anything else just now. Will come back to this.
And the thought of me rolling round a field with a She Wee attached to my nether regions was just not an attractive thought at all!

Puddles brought everything but her kitchen sink, although i am pretty sure she brought the washing up bowel from her kitchen sink.
What ever you haven't got some one else will have. Sorted.
3 nights of mayhem this time... oh dear...

| 22nd-25th August - Camping - Shell Island - Celebrating 5 Years Of POF Posted: 6/19/2008 6:38:51 AM | camping gear!
lily / steves list comprehensive - but my two pennuth worth! - forget sleeping bags - if you have a reasonable amount of space in your car roll up the duvet! (or even two - one for underneath as a lot of the cold comes from the ground (yes! even through the airbed)) I have yet to have felt the cold and have sat there at breakfast time feeling very smug when ever one else was "whimpering"
Ofcourse the alternate plan is to persuade someone to snuggle up with you - it is amazing how double the body heat works!!! (ahem - that wasn't my reason for the post night smugness btw - just incase you lot get any ideas!!! although I did try but my offers weren't taken up - lol maybe I was too subtle )
Anyhow - my plan - I am trying to persuade my son to come along and extend the break to 5 or 6 days !! - he will be nearly 14 so a separate tent is in order as I think he may be at that stage where sharing with mum is "so not cool!"
So any newbees - just go for it - believe me - it is a lot of fun! (I wouldnt do an 11 hour round trip if it wasn't!)

| 22nd-25th August - Camping - Shell Island - Celebrating 5 Years Of POF Posted: 6/19/2008 11:10:24 AM | At last - a POF event on Shell Island I can get to .
Only one snag as far as I can see - I will have been there for two weeks before this meet so no doubt I will miss the discussion about where you will be camping. I guess it might be difficult to pre - arrange the spot at this time of the year (it is the busiest weekend of the year after all).
Can I leave someone my mobile number nearer the time please so that I can catch up on what is happening etc.
Oh and if any one else is interested in hooking up - I am going for a week on 5th July - just me and the cat !
Ive really enjoyed reading of your escapades and how much you have come to love Shell Island. Im looking forward to seeing you all there.

Yes Pete, dont worry we always make sure we exchange number so we dont lose anyone!
Yes me and Mitchell will probably arrive on the Thursday and stay til Tuesday, may as well get a few more days out of it with it being the kids summer hols.
Right.........Camping Equipment list!
Ok well ive been twice now, so im definitely an expert now:
Tent with no poles, guide ropes or pegs Blow up bed with no bung in it to keep the air in Fluffy pink blanket Feather quilt and pillow Pretty pink Barby Q (in pieces with screws missing) Feather boa 3 outfits per day with matching shoes/bag/earrings Leopardskin wellies and matching dressing gown Air freshener and jiff wipes for toilets(never took these last time but im learning) 10 bottles of Lambrini
Well this was practically my sum total of equiptment both times and I got by ok

| 22nd-25th August - Camping - Shell Island - Celebrating 5 Years Of POF Posted: 6/19/2008 12:40:48 PM | Comprehensive list there Vick, ;)
I go with Jenny's duvet thing, that's what i take with me, but when i'm going further afield i have to go in the sleeping bag for space sake, and its a double with a fleece liner....
Oh and a HOT WATER bottle is Tina's recommendation, i forgot mine again this weekend. I wont be doing it next time!
Anyone else excited about this already??
Clive i think your right, i think we will be there for more then 3 nights of mayhem in the end... ouch!

| 22nd-25th August - Camping - Shell Island - Celebrating 5 Years Of POF Posted: 6/19/2008 2:31:29 PM | Well the pics of the last one looked so good that I just had to sign up for this one. You lot had such good fun and that pic of the sunset on the signup list is just absolutely amazing. I would brave a freezing cold night in a tent to see that for sure.
This will be my third camping trip now, never thought I would see that day

| 22nd-25th August - Camping - Shell Island - Celebrating 5 Years Of POF Posted: 6/20/2008 10:49:38 AM | | Thanks for all the welcoming advice, have now adopted the motto " Have Tent Will Camp " . Neighbours are now questioning my sanity though because I thought I would do the normal bloke thing, you know what I mean, buy something new, throw away instructions. After 2 hours and 1 very heavy downpour I was rewarded with something that looked more like a deflated paddling pool than a tent, am going to give it another go though over the weekend, hopefully be an expert at getting it up and down in a reasonable time. | |

| 22nd-25th August - Camping - Shell Island - Celebrating 5 Years Of POF Posted: 6/20/2008 4:05:10 PM | Well.........there has been a suggestion put forward for a Hawaiian theme too!
To include grass skirts, coconut bras (you are kidding!!!!), flowery shorts and shirts, garlands etc
Hmmm now this sounds interesting. We are planning to have a picnic at some point so how about the picnic maybe being on the beach, with a beach party/Hawaiian theme? I know it sounds like additional cost involved, but then then both the themes can be done on the cheap really! And we do have two months to get bidding against each other on ebay for costumes!
Maybe a wild west (or Wild Wales) night on the Fri or Sat night and the beach party/bbq or Hawaiian theme picnic on the Sunday??????

| 22nd-25th August - Camping - Shell Island - Celebrating 5 Years Of POF Posted: 6/21/2008 3:18:07 AM | OMG im getting totally confused about all these fancy dress outfits. Have I to dress up as a cowgirl AND get a hawaiian outfit too wouldnt want to put anyone off their bacon butties mind lol.
Im sooo looking forward to this one now, it sounds like its going to be a blast if the comments on here are anything to go by. Havent done gancy dress in years so better get myself on ebay before there is none left and you lot have all bagged them

| 22nd-25th August - Camping - Shell Island - Celebrating 5 Years Of POF Posted: 6/23/2008 4:47:11 PM | right,,,
You lot are really making me reconsider my plans - was supposed to be at Gold Cup at oulton park marshalling for 3 days...
Two fancy dresses is a bit much ... cowbays and indians may be fine .. but how do you re-use any of that the follwing night .... unless we all spend saturday pleating straw skirts from the sand-dunes.
The joint food thing worked really well last time - athough there was tons of leftovers, vicks -you are the mistress of the lists!

| 22nd-25th August - Camping - Shell Island - Celebrating 5 Years Of POF Posted: 6/23/2008 6:19:26 PM | Oh Simes dont worry we will make you a grass skirt and a garland of dandilions if needs be
I think Addy is going to be head chef on this one and be in charge of all the food lists etc.............ermmmmm arent you Ad, ermmm we did mention that to you didnt we
Ive decided that as there are probably going to be more kids there this time with it being a bank hol and the Summer hols, im going to organise activities for the kids, NO THAT DOES NOT INCLUDE BABYSITTING!!!!
Depending on how many kids we end up having going I was going to ask if anyone has a spare tent, or gazebo that we could put up for the little darlings and then we can have a sort of play tent and give them activities to do in it. And no im not a frustrated redcoat, im thinking of giving us adults some peace whilst the munchkins are amused

I have just PM'd Vicki to say i am happy to provide jam butties for all!!
Seriously though-what i did last time was a big spag bol (for 6) and a chicken curry (again for 6).
Then the usual eggs,bacon etc.
Nearer the time i will look at how many are going and suggest a few easy to make, easy to transport dishes and post on here and then maybe we can co-ordinate something so we don't have loads of food left over?
Not quite sure how we are gonna do that yet but i have two months to think about it so i am sure i will come up with something.
Watch this space.....................
