| Dress Shops in Calgary and/or Edmonton?? Posted: 6/19/2008 12:30:03 PM | Ok.....I have to buy a dress for my daughter's wedding and have no idea where to look ! I never wear dresses...last one I bought was three years ago...wore it to one wedding and one graduation. Looked at West Ed last weekend...nadda !!!! Looking for something really nice...classy, maybe a little sexy.....but not just your average off the rack dress...and something that doesn't cost over $300. Since I'm basically a jeans kinda person.....where does one go to look for such a thing? | |

| Dress Shops in Calgary and/or Edmonton?? Posted: 6/19/2008 12:50:12 PM | Depends if you want formal or just a nice dress that is dual function??
When I had to be purchasing such items for my ex, we frequented the Ladies stores in the malls, Suzy Shier, Fairweathers, Smart Set, Laura Petites and Reitman's to name a few. There is also the Bay, and Sears, or specialty shops in some of the smaller malls. You can find some nice styles at most places, but being on the 'petite side' such as you are, try Laura Petites or Fairweathers petite section, some nice cuts there!!
There used to be a good dress shop next to Clarences in Didsbury, but it has probably closed by now, that was 25 years ago!!

| Dress Shops in Calgary and/or Edmonton?? Posted: 6/19/2008 5:47:26 PM | | Bellissima - there is one in Southgate Mall and one in Edmonton Centre. They have lovely dresses. There's also a store downtown across from City Hall (to the West) that has MOB dresses and they seem to have a great selection and good sale prices. That store would be the hidden gem I think. | |

| Dress Shops in Calgary and/or Edmonton?? Posted: 6/19/2008 6:11:45 PM | | I find it sorta annoying that people actually voted to delete this thread. So someone asks a legitimate question & that's a reason to delete a thread versus the 48 page "Does a man's penis size matter" | |

| Dress Shops in Calgary and/or Edmonton?? Posted: 6/19/2008 9:22:43 PM | thanks all....duff...looking for something one of a kind and special.....being as I'm the mother of the bride and all ( holy crap...I'm old !! ) LOL
As for the other suggestions...I'll look up how to get to them and hope I find the right one. Heading up to Edmonton Wed for my daughter's final dress fitting...if I don't find anything that day, it will be off to Calgary the next week.
They wanted to delete my thread? Geeze......doesn't this have something to do with Alberta? And...how the he!! did I miss that penis thread?????

| Dress Shops in Calgary and/or Edmonton?? Posted: 6/19/2008 9:30:23 PM | There is a dress shop in Drumheller that I love. There is one in Stettler that is also very good.
Don't know the name of either one. And yes, I realize neither are in Calgary or Edmonton.
And can someone do a "coles notes" on the penis thread, let me know if there is someone I should chase!

| Dress Shops in Calgary and/or Edmonton?? Posted: 6/19/2008 9:33:25 PM | You'll have to clarify your size preference Castaline so we know what to look for for you!
LH
OT: I like Mariposa for dresses. And it's also Prom season so they have lots of selection and they're usually under $100.00.

Huh? Gone to look for the mentioned thread.

Edit: oops, on topic - good shops along 17th ave in Calgary

| Dress Shops in Calgary and/or Edmonton?? Posted: 6/21/2008 5:36:25 PM | | My favorites are Bellisima and Laura. I believe they are both in South Centre and Chinook Centre malls. Very nice gowns - not quite 'high end', but somewhere between Smart set, Reitmans, Fairweather, etc. and Holt Renfrew. No, on second thought, closer to the lower end stores - not anywhere near Holt Renfrew. But very nice dresses that are reasonably priced. | |

| Dress Shops in Calgary and/or Edmonton?? Posted: 6/22/2008 5:22:30 PM | Having worked women's retail for 6 years... I would recommend Laura... you are going to be on the cusp of petite/regular. Since you are not a "dress" kinda gal... I would recommend an out of this world pant / glitzy top outfit. Depends on the bride. What does she want to see you in??
The Laura sale stuff can be found in two stores in Edmonton. Mayfair Plaza or common (right up the road from West Ed) or SouthPark... on the south side. If you want to go the higher end... try Bellismas ... or Melanie Lynne (West Ed) has one. Is part of the the Laura chain.
I would recommend staying away from the "grad" dresses... You are also young and fit enough to avoid the "MOTHER OF THE BRIDE" nightmare clothes...
Be sure to get comfortable shoes! that is way more important then the outfit!
Good luck on your search!!!!

Looked in Laura....didn't really have anything at all. Yeah, definitely not wearing a grad gown...the bridesmaids aren't even in long gowns....and not doing the old maid mother of the bride gowns either.

| Dress Shops in Calgary and/or Edmonton?? Posted: 6/22/2008 7:18:56 PM | | Mayfield Common is north of WEM...head north on 170 street, then when it forks after Stony Plain road, take the fork to the right. Mayfield Common is on your right. | |
|
| Dress Shops in Calgary and/or Edmonton?? Posted: 6/22/2008 7:30:58 PM | Untamed has it right... mayfield common... you can see it (or almost see it) from the north east corner parking lot of west ed.... didn't exist when I lived in Edmonton...
If you were in Calgary I would go shopping with you...

| Dress Shops in Calgary and/or Edmonton?? Posted: 6/23/2008 3:50:26 PM | not sure of your tastes and style...you look a little edgy and into something unique and not "dated" by your pics. i'm a huge fan of Blame Betty on 17th ave. classic, 1950's retro styles that flatter any shape (there's a reason why that era remains one of the more romantic, glamorous influences in fashion). you could do an online search for their shop and see some of their items. i always give myself "crane neck" when i pass the shop on route...swooning over the latest dresses on display.
if that's not to your tastes, you can always pop a few doors over and check out Current. they always have nice stuff in great jersey knits and tailored pieces, if more casual but chic is to your liking.
good luck! | |

| Dress Shops in Calgary and/or Edmonton?? Posted: 6/23/2008 4:07:46 PM | Blame Betty has a pretty good group on Facebook - lots of pics. Their website just links to MySpace and that page is really hard to read. Lots of cool stuff in the store.
If you are coming to Calgary OP just take a wander down 17th Ave, try Britannia and Glenmore Landing as well as Willow Park. Lots of dress shops that aren't chain stores and you'll be bound to find something you like.
|
| Dress Shops in Calgary and/or Edmonton?? Posted: 6/23/2008 6:18:33 PM | I actually like the department stores like Sears. The Bay is way over priced, but if you hit Sears just right, they have a lot of nice formal wear.
Kingsway mall has some nice stores, but I think Southgate is one of the better malls. Also another thought you may want to try one of the bridal stores. There's one just off of Argyll.

| Dress Shops in Calgary and/or Edmonton?? Posted: 6/24/2008 6:15:27 AM | Blame Betty looks awesome....but seems to be over run with black and red...which would be cool if I was just a guest at a wedding....but my daughter's wedding is brown, blue and the flowers orange...so I was think along the lines of brown or burnt orange. ( I know, looking for fall colors at the wrong time of year ) Is there anywhere in Edmonton like 17th Ave...with lots of dress shops that aren't the regular chain stores? Heading to Edmonton tomorrow with my girls....and if that fails I'll have to take another trip to Calgary next week.
( FYI - looked in Sears and the Bay last week...didn't see one single formal dress )

| Dress Shops in Calgary and/or Edmonton?? Posted: 6/24/2008 7:06:20 AM | in edmonton: Whyte Ave on the south side. they have a lot of great little boutiques as well....and shops similar to Blame Betty.
re: red and black... it's true; there is a lot of it...but they also have featured some beautiful dresses in white, creme, and recently a cuuuute little number in yellow (silk?) w/a black pattern. it's worth a browse, for sure.

| Dress Shops in Calgary and/or Edmonton?? Posted: 6/24/2008 2:06:23 PM | Janalta...you're 5'4 and skinny, maybe you might want to try looking in Chinatown? There are 2 or 3 places along 97th. street that does formal wear. And if you give them enough time, they will do alterations if needed, or even tailor make one from scratch!
edit --> sorry, please ignore the "5'4 and skinny" comment.
