Here's an interesting article about 17 girls in a Massachusetts high school forming a pact to get pregnant. While I think teenagers have always been obsessed with sex, it seems that there is more discussion about pregnancy and motherhood. The recent movies of Juno and Knocked up have lifted the shame that was previously associated with teenage unplanned pregnancy.

There are more single moms than ever before, so the idea that a woman needs to be married or with a long-term boyfriend is not longer seen as essential to starting a family and having a child. I also think our society has been influenced by the more religious Bush presidency that has advocated a pro-life agenda that has taken away the shame or options of terminating pregnancies as a choice and instead promoting child-birth no matter the age of the woman.

In the recent news of the FLDS advocating marriage of girls under 17, and the greater career options and ideals of feminism have facilitated a mindset that girls can do anything they want including getting pregnant and becoming a single mom. The girls may want to college someday but they also know that they may have more career options than previous generations.

However, I also believe the fault comes from the parents who did not focus their children on going to college or using contraceptives.

The USA has the highest teen pregnancy rate of any first world country. Unfortunately politics has trumped evidence based research in the area of sexual education in your country.

By May, several students had returned multiple times to get pregnancy tests, and on hearing the results, "some girls seemed more upset when they weren't pregnant than when they were," Sullivan says. All it took was a few simple questions before nearly half the expecting students, none older than 16, confessed to making a pact to get pregnant and raise their babies together. Then the story got worse. "We found out one of the fathers is a 24-year-old homeless guy," the principal says, shaking his head.

What is going on in these girls heads? Wanting a baby and actually making a pact to do it? OMG, these girls have NO idea what is going to happen to them now, and it is truly sad. All they know is what they see on TV, they see cute outfits and cooing babies, the cool strollers and picking out cutsie little names... what they don't see is are the late nights, cleaning up poop and puke, not being able to afford the nice stuff they are used to and not going out on Saturday nights anymore.

Don't get me wrong, I have 2 kids, and it wasn't all pain and anguish... we had alot of fun too. But I made damn sure that I was going to enjoy my teens and early 20's before taking on the responsibility of a child and there was no way I was going to bring my parents into the mix and make them take care of and pay for, not only me, but now a baby too. How are these teens going to afford their babies... live off of welfare or thier parents?

What schools need is REAL sex education... not this PC garbage. Girls need to see and hear the same things we hear in pre-natal classes... the stuff that makes grown pregnant women cringe and wonder if they are doing the right thing. They need to get shown pictures of what sexually transmitted diseases look like and what happens to babies if the mother doesn't take care of herself while pregnant. The guys need to be shown the same thing, they need to be told that getting a girl pregnant also means a huge financial responsibility for the next 18 years (at least). Parents need to take responsibility too... they need to have open dialogue with thier kids and hold them responsible for thier actions.

Ugh... stories like this make me sick!

I think they're fully aware of what's going to happen. They're going to get:

1) Child support from the dad.
2) Welfare.
3) Food stamps.
4) Free or cheap health care.
5) Taxpayer subsidized housing.
6) Support from charities.

These girls are leeches and the bleeding hearts who demand the social net "for the children" (most of whom will end up in prison) are the enablers.

Let me guess, you got this by doing a quantitative psych study of the kids involved?

chthonic warrior ,

What the hell was that about ? Just because you think so poorly of these girls doesn't make them bottom-feeding scum . You don't know what it is exactly that motivated these girls in the first place. We can all take a guess of course but considering that these girls clearly have gotten some squirrely notions in their heads about babies, I'd be surprised if even half of them actually knew what posessed them to make this pact with each other in the first place.

There's no such thing as a "toss-away-baby"...that even applies to the baby that you once were. It's bad enough that some people think of abortion as birth control without us encouraging each other to help that ideology along by undermining the social construct set up to ensure that all babies are considered fully human. Bill Gates' kid isn't any more or less valuable as a human being than the crack whore who just gave birth in an alley somewhere. What you're doing is basically assigning guilt by association. Well, next time a baby holds up a bank to pay off the bookies, I'll be sure to pass that information along to you so you can use it as ammunition in the fight against "Chav scum babies". In the meantime, show just a tiny little bit of common sense would you ?

Tick-tick-tick in ten years will stop for the young, smooth and fresh little darlings. Unless their were fat and used up, take the smooth and fresh out.

Biological clock is learned at school and society glamorizes pregnancy and childbirth. Too much freedom and too little boundaries. Women have a desire to have babies and this bunch is no different.

They also are aware most men don't want to marry them and they don't want retarded yes man for husbands. Procreation continues.

Yeah, I can tell that was part of her "plan", the 24-y/o homeless guy is a good choice if you are looking for child support! Besides, it said "none older than 16" in the quote, if that age is true of most of the guys, they'll be in jail for statuatory rape for a while I'd think.

Sad state of "affairs" (bad pun, but apt).

Ahh, the glamour of welfare and food stamps.
I bet these girls didn't have a thought in thier heads about money and how they are going to raise these babies, I'm sure most of them were thinking about how cutsie-wootsie thier babies are going to be and how cool it is to all go out together with the babies. Man, it's going to be one hellova wake up call for these girls.

Sounds like yet another "moral panic" is starting in the media.
If these girls are foolish enough (along w/ their obviously crappy parents) to get pregnant in high school and almost certainly doom themselves and their children to a life of poverty, why give their actions any credence or validation by reporting them?

Other than "I told you so" or the "kids these days " factor...why is this news, again?

From what I heard this morning they will all be helping eachother raise the babies.
Of course I'm not sure HOW that will work. I guess they have a few months to work out that minor detail.

To the fellow above. It's "news" , not because it happened but because they all made a pact to do it. It's actually quite disturbing.

I love it: girls thinking with their uteruses (uterii?), and some loser homeless guy gets sex!

In five years they'll all be on POF asking where all the good guys are and why nobody wants to date them.

Anybody see the movie Idiocracy?

Unfortunately, and like so many other bizarre stories such as this, it won't do much to prompt an actual meaningful discussion on whether or not (and how) a society has a right to regulate reproduction, or whether a feral reproduction system is really what we want because it's in the best interest of everyone.

Instead of blaming Hollywood, George Bush, FLDS, feminism or the parents, maybe it's time to hold these girls accountable for their actions. These girls are treating pregnancy as some kind of game, never giving a thought to the consequences. Their recklessness and stupidity suggest they will make terrible mothers. It's the children who will suffer. These girls need a stern lesson in personal responsibility.

Ok i was a teen mom, i got pregnate in highschool. By the time my son was born my best friend had two beautiful little girls and she was 17. I was nineteen when he was born and at no time did i think abou t getting welfare food stamps or child support. However life happens and in michigan, 98 percent of our popululation is on some form of government aid. The girls in question yes made a stupid decision but we cant change that i just think that schools should do away with "baby think it over" and have teens take care of an actual child for even a few hours up to 48 hours with supervision. I would never give my son up but if it could stop a teenage girl from trying to get pregnate than i would gladly let them take him for a night.

It is all well and good having Sex Ed etc but do they actually tell the girls/Boys not to have sex in the first place. My daughter came back after her sex ed class and told me how all they talked about/did was put a condom on a dildo and discuss how to have sex safely, at no point were they told not to. (She's 13 yrs old.

I have always told my kids that it is for the boy to try and the girl to deny.

According to the news, none of this mother-to-be is over 16 years old, will the fathers be charged for having sex with an underage? What the law says? Nobody goes to jail for that?

I think the grandparents need to have a support group of themselves.

It reminds me of the suicide packs at schools a couple of years ago...

At least they are not killing themselves.

Now only if The Disney channel and MTV could get kids to enter into packs to go to school everyday and learn something.

Let me guess, you got this by doing a quantitative psych study of the kids involved?

Let me guess you are purposely ignoring the stats on graduation and post secondary education for teen moms versus the general population? And the effect it will have on their lives (and consequently the childs)?

.womenwork.org/network/conferences/Gupta.ppt

a high school diploma lowers the probability of receiving TANF benefits by 40% and food stamps by 19%
Those with at least some college reduce their chances of receiving TANF benefits by 62%, housing assistance by 35%, and food stamps by 45%

http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2008/06/20/earlyshow/main4198453.shtml

But Boesky warned, "All the research shows that (teenage pregnancy) is not good. They have a higher rate of dropping out of high school, they have a higher rate of low birth babies, they have a higher rate of premature babies. Kids of teen parents -- girls are more likely to be teen parents themselves, and boys twice as likely, if they're born to teen mothers, to end up in jail. So, it's not good for society, it's not good for these teens, and it's not good for the parents and grandparents who often have to raise these kids

Got their game plan in place....all collecting welfare....hey...that many could buy a large home and actually pull off this "raising kids together". some could stay home and look after the kids...others actually go ut and either get more education or bring in cash in other ways.
Hey..I've heard of "clans" pulling this off...why not them?

ah well...the new "way to make a living"....guess it CAN work...if you plan it right and know how to "play the system".

Gawd...I've never heard of such a dumbazz thing to do in my life....this should be on "jackass"!!

hmm wonder if anyone ever considered these girls are maybe missing something in themselves and their selfish lives, and perhaps are looking for true love . the only true love there is in life .your childs.
not all single mothers are whores or sluts ppl. even if they want to have a child it doesnt make them sleezy. certainly no sleezier than the man that gets off doing them

have some class , and cthon get a life your ignorance truly showed thru your judgement

we were all young once
too bad acceptance and intelligence isnt a prereq for growing up into adults

it isnt like they made a get pregnant and then have abortions pacts
id rather support single moms than deadbeat dads

This story is so sad. Odd that Fox online reported another strange story today from the same town in Mass. Mother and boy friend were arrested for posting kiddie porn on the net. Seems boy friend was having sex with Mother's 8 year old.....and posting pics (maybe video) online. Sad, sad place to raise babies. I actually feel sick. Unflippingbelievable!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! SO ANGRY.

Yeh, this is a world known fishing port that is very Catholic. It's also an artist colony and blue collar/white collar mixed. The local news is blaming--get this--the film "Juno" as contributing to the motivation.

This is the city that "The Perfect Storm" was written about. So, you have a lot of fishermen and their families that live under a lot of physical threat to their lives with the ocean. It's been the same families in 3 deckers living and fishing for over 200 years.

I would think that their way of life is very ingrained. A lot of the mothers of these teenage girls had them as teenagers, too.

Yes, folks, OUR TAX MONEY . . . . .. .. .

I forgot that its a very Catholic town. I wonder if that effects the distribution of condoms since the Catholic Church does not advocate birth control.
