| What is it about tanning Posted: 6/19/2008 4:42:29 PM | That improves one's apperance or muscle definition, etc? Are shadows more obvious because whiter skin reflects light? Is it because it hides those tiny veins? Minor skin irritations/blemishes, etc???
What does SPF do exactly? Blocks UV rays but do you still tan? I wore some today and layed outside for about 2-3 hours. I burnt a little bit still but nothing intense.
In the past, I have always favoured sitting outside for 30 minutes without skin protection and then calling it quits for the day, I find the no protection appraoch much more effective use of time.
Do you wear tanning lotion when you goto a tanning salon???

| What is it about tanning Posted: 6/19/2008 9:04:54 PM | I use a tan maximizer at the tanning salon, no spf except on my face and tattoo. I prefer fake bake because the tan is even all over the body--no lines | |

| What is it about tanning Posted: 6/19/2008 10:02:57 PM | Sunblock wears off, you will burn if you do not reapply. It works to block UV rays from the sun... you know, those radiation things that can cause cancer.
Every time you get a sun burn your risk of getting skin cancer increases 5 times.
Like smoking, it's not good for you, but it's considered cool so everyone does it. I'm pretty sure it's natural as a human to be exposed to sun but the ozone isn't what it used to be and the sun is now more of a danger in long exposures.
I like sunless tanner... it's still cheaper than a tanning salon and my skin won't look like leather when I'm 30. And yeah it does make muscles look more defined which is why all the body builders in competitions like to look really dark.

| What is it about tanning Posted: 6/19/2008 11:03:22 PM | The sun's UVB can create up to 25K IU of Vitamin D3 in the skin in non-black people. As non-black tan (melanin), the same amt of UVB will create less Vit D3.
Everybody should get some sun, a reasonable amount. It's Good For Ya. Screw the dermatologists. They cause cancer by telling people to avoid all sun, use chemical sunblocks that get absorbed into the body. Absence of sun exposure depresses the Vit D into various degrees of deficiency, and plays a role in initiating cancer and all kinds of other bad stuff, MUCH more than any amt of cancer from sun exposure.

Man evolved in the sun. Now we can't go out in the sun, even reasonably, cutting us off more and more from nature.

Sunblock can cause cancer, whereas sunlight exposure can't if you eat plenty of antioxdiant foods and healthy fats. Most people don't get enough sunlight, if you live in Canada or USA you need at least 30 minutes 4 times a week at least. Usually noon is the best time so if you get exposure later on the day you need to get exposure longer. Same with the eyes, sunglasses can do more harm than good. You actually need sunlight exposure indirectly from the sun. This will actually improve your eye site.
In winter time cod liver oil is the best for vitamin D, I don't like the idea of tanning beds.

| What is it about tanning Posted: 6/22/2008 2:50:47 AM | I have a fair complexion, and my skin is very fair. On the beach, I literally blind all those lovely women with my very white skin.
I have always accepted it, and am perfectly happy with my fair skin. Thats how I was born, it is my genetic makeup. Nothing wrong with marble I say.
For some persuits, like modelling, bodybuilding comps etc, a tan is a requirement. I used to do a bit of topless waitering at hens nights years ago, and I used to apply the fake tan, only because it is a requirement of the job. Muscle definition definately shows more when tanned under most lighting conditions.
Variety is the spice of life, we can't all have that perfect tanned look, very white skin can be beautiful too.

| What is it about tanning Posted: 6/27/2008 1:20:22 PM | I think there is a moderate way - I like to be tanned (i was really pale till recently when i went on holiday and i look so much healthier now!) but you dont have to go OTT about it...
There are health benefits, sun helps both physical and mental illnesses - people commonly feel happier in sunnier environments and skin conditions often improve.
I do wear sun tan lotion as I dont like to burn and when I tan its normally while im walking around so i cant nessesarily get out of the sun immediately.
I also think part of the reason a tan looks good is that when skin gets too pale (ie near translucent stages!) it can get a bit of a blue tinge (mine had!) and the tan stops that.. hooray!

| What is it about tanning Posted: 6/29/2008 6:41:13 PM | | I have never tanned in my life. Well sure I play soccer outside and stuff but usually play when sun is down. A lot of friends are recommending me to start tanning because it helps you show better definition. My brother and dad are brown but my mom and sisters are white. | |

| What is it about tanning Posted: 8/2/2008 10:37:20 PM | | When I was younger, I spent a lot of time in the sun, so I tan really fast in the summer. In the winter, I turn this awful shade of white and look anemic. This winter I am going to try and use a tanning cream that gives you one of those fake tans. I have already bought one for my face. | |

| Tanning covers a multi-tude of sins...... Posted: 8/3/2008 8:11:04 AM | However, with the sun being so bad for us, there are alternatives.....
Do not have stock in Lancome, so this is not a plug for me to get anything out of it, but Lancome has some self tanning products that are really good and look very natural...the gel is the best......and there is no odor....
Bought some this year as a recommendation from another friend of mine who used to bake in the sun. She always tanned, while I always burned.....have used Lancome's self tanner and love the way it looks. It's very natural looking and does not rub off on my clothes, nor does it look orange.....
Men use it as well as women. Helps one to look very healthy, thinner in certain areas, and younger.....the younger ones don't have to think of that, but as we get older, it's a consideration....
Fair skin can be very beautiful, but as one who has fair skin, I like to have alternatives.....

| What is it about tanning Posted: 8/3/2008 10:07:45 AM | | I don't tan because it's "cool" I do it because it makes me feel better mentally. The hour laying by the pool or just playing on a beach releases tension, stress, and general crankiness. I think I look better with a light tan, and it does minimize the appearance of some flaws. | |

| What is it about tanning Posted: 8/4/2008 7:05:43 AM | I love being in and on the water. I'm just not happy when I am landlocked for any length of time.
Sunshine and water go together. I use a little SPF, but I also cover up with a hat and sleeves. I have the coolest old hat. It makes me feel like Lauren Bacall. I dont like sun on my face. I have lucky genetics, but it's up to me how I take care of my skin.
I dont intentionally tan, it just happens.

| What is it about tanning Posted: 8/4/2008 1:20:27 PM | It enhances shadows. The effect is called Churasscaro, light advances, dark recedes. When you have a darker tone shadows are enhanced, and surface imperfections are minimized. This is why candle lit dinners are so popular....makes everyones features better!
And this statement from above;
"Sunblock can cause cancer"
is pure hogwash. Dude or dudette, I dont know who posted it...be careful what you say, your advice is a recipe for melanoma.

What does SPF do exactly? Blocks UV rays but do you still tan? I wore some today and layed outside for about 2-3 hours. I burnt a little bit still but nothing intense.
SPF (Sun Protection Factor) is a number given as a rough guide to follow before your burn. For example, let's say if you're fair skinned and you would burn in 30 minutes on a high UV day (sunny with clean air). If you use a low SPF lotion designed to let one tan (SPF 4), then take the 30 minutes and multiply by 4. You would burn after 120 minutes. But of course, lotions wear off by sweating, exposure to water and so on so that number is actually less.
In the past, I have always favoured sitting outside for 30 minutes without skin protection and then calling it quits for the day, I find the no protection appraoch much more effective use of time. You can do that but be very careful if you're just starting out. It does save on time. I would still recommend a low spf tanning lotion. You need to keep that skin hydrated and tanning with nothing isn't wise. You will dry your skin out and dry skin doesn't tan well, nor does it look well. Some people use a concoction of medium spf (6-8) lotion combined with indoor tanning lotion (designed for tanning beds and so on) and get good results. I know that Wal Mart in the states sells low grade indoor stuff so mix that with some spf 6 or 8. And do NOT use tingle type lotions outside unless you're a glutton for punishment!
Do you wear tanning lotion when you go to a tanning salon??? Yes, absolutely! Again, as above, skin hydration is key to a good looking tan. And stay away from anything containing mineral oil (which isn't allowed in tanning salons since it damages acrylic and also dries out your skin). I would say that tanning is okay but do it in moderation. Hope that helps ya, Cheers,

| What is it about tanning Posted: 8/10/2008 12:26:57 AM | Some people who don't have much pigment not only look white, but sometimes they can appear sort of gray. However, it seems that people are becoming more educated about the damaging effects of the sun and are taking precautions both for themselves and their children.
I was once concerned about not having a tan, but now, I am not as much concerned. My skin, fortunately, is in pretty good shape with very few, if any, wrinkles and major blemishes (but there is skin damage when viewed using ultra-violet). Unfortunately, my skin would have been even better if I had not burned it the few times that I can remember (and I wish I did not remember, eh).
But I do like some color. No matter what, I wear some sort of protection. It's a habit now and I've been using facial and neck moisturizer for years. When my body is exposed, I use a block for UVA/B, etc. for maximum protection (waterproof kind, mostly). I like Neutrogena's sun blocking product.
Have I worn tanning solution when visiting the tanning salon? I don't go anymore, but I have. I'm just not keen on visiting them anymore.
Now, when it comes to the spray on tan, I haven't seen anyone with one (I may have and not noticed). I'm guessing that the spray on tan is sort of orangey, but I don't know. If not, I might check it out.

| What is it about tanning Posted: 8/11/2008 4:22:33 PM | I use spray on tan:) After the first two coats you lose the orangey color and it becomes a subtle brown lol, although if you do it wrong and you get the streaks,,,well that sucks haha.... I use loreal spray on....its a miracle worker...and tan is sexy for now so thats what it is about lol | |

| What is it about tanning Posted: 8/12/2008 10:12:08 PM | | I use sunscreen only if I'm going to be in the sun for extended periods of time ..... I've read some controversy over the possible side effects of it. However, I do eat fresh fruits and vegetables at least 4-5 xs a day (raw mostly) and find I have a tan all year round.....something in the plant cells seems to protect me from burning and hold a tan .... since I do have moles that had become sore when tanning in those beds 10yrs ago, which no longer cause me pain, I would say that whatever is happening now is ok. ...... mind you, I'm not a sun worshiper, yet try to get at least a min of 20mins a day all year round. | |

I love tanning! I know I shouldn't do it, but there's something about it that just makes me feel better! I think most who tan would agree with that statement including me! I don't go year in / year out though. I went through a "dry spell" where I didn't go for a couple years. It's a good idea to let your skin lay fallow (rest) every so often.
|
| What is it about tanning Posted: 8/25/2008 9:16:47 PM | Over-exposure to the sun is very damaging to the skin. Like everything else it's about moderation, especially since we have less of an ozone layer to protect us from the nasty rays that cause skin cancer. It's important to get some sun exposure to produce vitamin D, especially for those of us in the more northern latitudes, but it's equally important to do so sensibly. Having had skin cancer (and I'm not a tanner, would rather spray it on in a booth!) I'd encourage people to educate themselves and use common sense when it comes to sun exposure.
I think tanning salons should be illegal. There is nothing safe about them.

| What is it about tanning Posted: 8/25/2008 9:27:17 PM | I haven't had a tan since I was about 8 years old.
Sometimes I kinda want to but I know it would probably more-so "destroy" my skin... I'd like to find a good cheap spray on tan that doesn't look so fake/streaky.
