By piercings, tattoos or wild coloured hair or haircuts when someone is working?

I've been doing the job hunt thing and Im noticing companies have a wild swing going on. Some places encourage "individualism" and other places demand "conformity".

Is there a difference between a "tasteful" amount of "individuality" and "too much"?

Does the way a person looks in their workplace effect the way the job is done?

I think it all comes down to customer contact.

If you're going to buy life insurance, do you want to buy it from the professional looking guy in the suit?
Or the kid with the 3 foot purple mohawk?

Naturally, in some positions, yes, you should look more "professional".
But for those who work in back office positions, sitting at a desk all day... I don't really see why it would matter.

I get that companies want people to conform to the "business look" because it supposedly makes them more "efficient" or something.
Of course, I do an amazing amount of work sitting at home in front of the computer in shorts and t-shirt, my leg hanging over the arm of the chair. :p

Personally, I figure if you're not doing anything to disturb or offend anyone else... then what you look like shouldn't really matter. If you're sat at your desk all day... then what difference does it really make?
Does wearing jeans suddenly mean you're going to stop working?

I think in the comming years you will see more visable tattoos and piercings in the work place as it'll be hard to hire someone without them.

I disagree.

There are a lot of people out there that don't have any piercings or tattoos.

If someone is not prepared to present themselves properly to an employer, someone else will as long as the money is shown. Even some of the places that pay minimum wage are picky. The only ones that are not picky are low wage jobs with high turnover.

I really can't stand tattoos and piercings when someone is a server in a restraunt - not conducive to an appetising meal! I would also not like my banker to have such body art - JMHO!

Given the environment I work in and experiencing direct, and indirect, contact with people from many social backgrounds, I am no longer one to disapprove and/or judge others based on their appearance. Afterall... in the 50's/60's it was forbidden for women to wear low cut tops to work. Nowadays, it seems you are a prude if not showing some tit....

In the end, people's appearances are as appealing as a car - you like it or you don't. Along with such an evaluation bias opinions and perceptions create unwarranted and unjustifiable conclusions about the person.

Judging a book by it's cover is indicative of undeveloped maturity and poor attitude.

I am definitely not offended!

I usually find people with tats and piercings to be very friendly and helpful people. I would appreciate it if my banker or lawyer or any other "professional" had piercings or tats. It would make them seem more real to me.

I lament that I will more than likely have to take out my piercings to get my "career". Alas, we must all make these sacrifices in the name of money tho.

During the hiring process you are evaluated based on your education, skills, and presentation of your character (hence behavioral interviewing). Given that, I would overlook a tattoo that is covered, or an extra piercing in the ear, probably even a stud in the nose would not effect my evaluation.

If you entered the interview with a ring through your eyebrow, lip, cheek or had tattoos that extend up your neck or down your arms I would characterize you as immature and a short term thinker. For this reason the interview would be short and a call back would be lacking.

In support of another reply here, face piercing have no place in the food service business IMO.

I admit, I have a tattoo on my right forearm. It is my kids' names, in a font that looks like a cross between sanskrit and gaelic. I designed it myself. It has immense personal meaning to me, and I will never be ashamed of it.

That being said, I would never go to a job interview without wearing a long sleeve shirt (I think that should be a given anyhow), and would never let a client see it until I am sure the working relationship would not be negatively affected.

Even having tats and piercings myself, I still think it is poor business practice to let them show.

I made no effort to hide my tattoos or piercings when I've been on job interviews. To do so would make me feel like I'm embarrassed or ashamed of them and that is not the case. If you feel the need to hide something like that then maybe you shouldn't get it in the first place. I've never lost out on a job due to being visibly tattooed or pierced but I do know people who have and quite frankly any place that would judge based on that is not somewhere I'd want to work anyway(with the exception of piercings that could pose a physical danger while on the job) .

I hear this excuse that these body modifications are not professional looking and it just doesn't jive with me. Get with the times people, tattoos and piercings are growing in popularity so much they are becoming mainstream and are no longer the rebelious taboo thing to do. The close -minded attitude of what a "professional " should look like is changing and rightly so. People need to stop discriminating against others period.

Body piercing came from the idea from Afraica. It's funny how people will do something it's cool. I wouldn't want to eat at a resturant if the waitress has piericings. If they have no visible tattos that's ok since I can't see them. Just because something is popular doesn't mean it's ok. How popular is pericings? I don't see it that popular. I go for bike rides all the time and I rarely see people with body piercings.

I'm loving watching this board bounce back and forth.

Seems like it comes down to if you personally have/enjoy tats and piercings (in most cases). As well as most seem to think piercings dont belong in a restaurant type position.

Myself Ive worked in restaurant positions with piercings and I have always found Im more likely to lose an earring then a facial piercing. If you think about it, facial piercings are mostly screw on, earrings tend to be slide on backs or no backs depending on the earring. Much more likely that something slides off on its own then unscrews itself.

But again... does it effect the way the job is physically done?

Unless its someone that plays with their tongue ring all the time, I dont think so. I personally am more offended by someone who bites their nails at work, at least a tongue ring stays in the mouth area, while peoples fingers are all over the place.

I they look unprofessional myself and in most cases find them an eye sore. But what can you do? I wouldn't go as far to consciously boycott a restaurant over it.

Wild colored hair... depends, sometimes people make it work.

I dunno, I was brought up being told you shouldn't judge people based on looks alone. Body modification has been around for thousands of years in all cultures . People get modifications for so many different reasons (religious/spiritual, cultural etc) It's a slippery slope when you start discriminating against someone for a tattoo/piercing etc and you aren't sure of the meaning behind them. I wonder why it's not ok to discriminate based on a persons chosen religious/cultural belief but it is ok to do it anyone else who has it because they appreciate it. If it's been prevalent in human society throughout history who is it that gets to decided who is allowed to have something done to themselves and who isn't? What is the difference between seeing pierced ears over a pierced nostril or lip? What makes an ear piercing any more hygenic than say a nostril or lip? They are all on the head within close proximity so why would those opposed to being served by someone with a lip ring not be as upset over earrings?

Maybe I find breast implants, the paralasys look of botoxed faces and unaturally fat collagen lips to look unprofessional yet I don't hear about people who do that to themselves being told they are unprofessional. What makes those types of modifications more acceptable than tattoos and piercings?

Society determines what is acceptable and what isn't and I think right now and for a few years now the tides have been changing towards more acceptance for visibly modified people. Some people don't like and resist change. I understand that and am entitled to disagree with their opinion.

You took the words right out of my mouth!

I'm actually quite disgusted when I see grown adults judging others because of their appearances. You try to teach your children to express themselves and to love themselves for who they are... maybe some feel the need to express themselves, personality through body work.

Time are changing .... either accept it or hide out in your house.

Hmmm.... to be honest if I had a surgeon or lawyer with facial piercings, or visible tattoos... or even a mohawk or funky colored hair I wouldn't want them to work for me.

There are certain times and places for such things.

I don't condone piercings or tats.. I have a few of each of my own... I'm just saying....

you shouldn't judge someone by their outward appearance. i mean, lets say you have a choice between two doctors to perform a life saving opperation. one is clean looking, proper, and has no piercings or tatoos. the other, has a 2 foot mohawk 7 rings in his left ear, two in his nose, one in his lip, and a tatoo on the right side of his face. you'd probably pick the clean proper one. now the opperation is completed, but there's a problem, because the one you had perform the opperation was only a novice, and you missed out on the world class surgeon with over 50 lives saved under his belt because you didn't like his outward appearance. this is a sample of what could happen. to me, it's all about the person's attitude. if i was being served a baconator burger from a counter help server with a smile on his/her face and 7 rings in his/her face, i'd be happy. same situation, but the counter help worker is now a highly pissed off worker, who intentionally messes up your order just to see you get pissed, but she has no piercings or tatoos. that wold piss you off wouldn't it?

I'm actually quite disgusted when I see grown adults judging others because of their appearances.

In an ideal world perhaps we wouldn't, but everyone is guilty of judgment based on looks. If you don't think so, think about a scenario of getting on a nearly full bus. We wouldn't pick our seat based on the best view out the window.

I recently cut my hair Mohawk style and I have a pierced eyebrow. The eyebrow didn't affect much of how people saw me, but I was shocked at what a strip of hair down the center of my head did to turn people away. I'm still the same person, but you wouldn't know it. Even my mom looks at me differently.

People have preconceived notions about the quality of a person depending on their looks. I don't think it will ever go away.

As far as being served by somebody who has tattoos or piercings, I think it's pretty ridiculous to turn someone away based on either of those reasons.

depends on the situation and age I think.

My 5 year old son had a mohawk last summer and we bought the coloured cement/gel of red to put in the spikes. (Actually - lately he's been bugging to do it again). Funny, most kids loved it - thought it was cool. When he was in Karate class he quickly adapted the nickname "Mo". Most parents were ok with it (prolly cause they got kids of their own wanting the same thing) - but some "uptight ones" would stare at him like his skin was purple with yellow spots and gave me the "what kinda mother are you to allow that?" look.

Personally, I love that fact that my son does what he wants because it's something he wants to do - without caring (or noticing for that matter) that some people have concern for things outside of the "norm". As long as it doesn't jeopardize his health or is illegal I don't care. Tattoos and piercings IMO are a bit different - hair grows back - the previously mentioned are permanent and I would suggest that it be something he think long and hard about before it gets done.....oh, that and not until he's 16.

My daughter has tatoos - and those large ear hole things - ugh! I love my daughter deeply and she is a very intelligent, wonderful girl! I still hate her tatoos and her freakin' ear thingys!! I'm not judging her - I just hate the horrible look of the tats and the ear thingys!! I cried when she did them!! I do not find them attractive at all!

As someone who has posessed all three of the above, no I am not offended. But I've grown out of it for the most part, so I do believe that maturity has a tie to how far you go with it. If you've got a CEO with said 3-foot purple mohawk, however, obviously he has the intelligence and maturity to get that far, so I don't see a problem.

Oral/nasal piercings + medical professions/food professions = no, though.

I love diversity. However I do cover up my tat during interviews. In my opinion, it's a distraction for the interviewer(s) and it can create a barrier between my work role and my personal life.

I am more likely to take offence to poor hygiene than symbolism. For me, there isn't anything more distasteful than a great tat engraved on the skin of a smelly cat.
