Hi Terry
A great night or what, thanks to you. Will defiantly come along again to the next one, and bring some friends, I told my friends about the party & they wished they had know about it, O well now I know its great, will invite some friends along next time, the more the merrier. Drinks were reasonable prices, an free to get in, what more can you ask for. I just wish I was twenty years younger, LOL you looked GREAT on the night , one sexy Lady, a nice dress you had on, I would have danced with you all night.
Thanks again for organizing every thing. looking forward to the next party.
Take care :- Lenny

What can I say… first time for me at a POF meet, I will admit that I was a bit sceptical before the event, but Terry… an EXCELLENT evening! I’ll do a full review, hopefully those who were thinking about it, but decided not to, will change their minds for the next one –

The Good

The Location : What a brilliant find! Easy to get to, well sign posted, large car park. POF signs on the door say you’re in the right place.

The Room : Very good indeed! Adequate dance floor, loads of chairs and tables, you could get away from the central area where the music was loudest to the quieter side areas. A great venue, very well suited to the event.

The Bar : All too often venues make their money from extortionate bar prices, this one didn’t. Good and efficient bar staff, queues not too long, very reasonable prices.

The People : What a great bunch the POF crowd are. We’re all in the same situation, people are friendly and approachable, lots of smiling faces all evening.

The Bad

The Music : Oh dear. Loads of people were commenting about it, several directly to the DJ (to no avail), the music was TERRIBLE. The DJ totally misread the room, an entire evening of monotonous 140+bpm club/techno music was not what was required. Several times he completely emptied the dance floor, quite an achievement with probably about 100 people there. Requests were either ignored or “I haven’t got that”, demands for some retro 70’s/80’s were met with 10 minutes of pre-mixed medley which at least got people dancing, before it was back to the club/techno mix which cleared the floor again.

For Next Time

I hope that there is a next time. There is so very little that could be improved, Terry has got it pretty much spot on already. If you want people to sign in on the name list then sort it into alphabetical order, most people just gave up. Something to improve mingling? I have no idea what, some form of ice breaker to get people out of their groups?

Music can make or break an event, it can turn a good evening into a really great one. A DJ needs to read the room, provide a mixture of genres and tempos, something for everybody! For the next one the DJ needs to be made aware of the audience and told to play what people want and not what the DJ wants.

Thanks

We all owe a massive vote of thanks to Terry and her helpers, they did a brilliant job and without them it would never have happened. Thanks to all my fellow fishes as well for turning up and making it a great evening.

Hi Keefys, glad you had a good time - unfortunately a few people have complained about the music - i hope it will be better next time.

Funnily enough the guest list was in alphabetical order , the men first and then the ladies - it was printed off from the website - but it was probably not very clear, but i did not know the club wanted it until about 4 hours before the event - i will type it up in advance next time!!!!

Yes i have thought about some sort of 'ice breaker' but the only idea i could come up with was something stupid like musical chairs - i.e. make everyone sit at a table (equal male female) and everytime the music stops (say every 5-10 mins) all the males have to move to a different table!!! - but I am sure that someone reading this can come up with a better idea???!!! so come on guys............. this is not my event, it is your event - so let us know what you want!!!!

Thought I'd chime in and say I really enjoyed Friday also. First time I've been out in over 6 months so maybe my view of a "good night" could be a bit biased

I thought the music was ok, but maybe the next time a poll can be given on what of music the general consesus wuld like? Nothing to specific, just an over all genre.

I had no complaints myself, but I use to be a club DJ back in the days so my taste in music is pretty widespread.
Anyway, well done for a great evening! I've met many nice people I've would have only have met because of the get-together.
Looking forward to many more.

Hi Capricorn - glad you had a good time and hope it wont be another 6 months before you go out again........................... come on - lifes too short - get out and P A R T Y!!!!!

I hope everyone is not gonna critise the music - Normally clubs are known for the type of music i.e. garage, indi etc and people choose their club according to their own music taste. I am sure you appreciate how difficult it is to select music for such a vast age group and type of person.

Admittedly I would normally be the first on the dance floor and the last off (as the DJ is well aware from my previous visits to the club!! lol), but I only danced for about 20 mins, so something was not the same as last time - however, I know that everyone did their best, everyone had a great time, and everyone is looking forward to the next one................................. what more can we ask!!!!

Hope to see you at the next one - by which time the decorating will be finished and there will be new trendy furniture and another great time will be had by all!!

Don't take it personally about the music Terry, it's certainly not your fault that the club landed us with a bad DJ. A couple of people commented that the music at the first one was far better, and if the only little niggle for the evening was the music (easily fixed!) then you've done a brilliant job and organised a great event

It is difficult to get the music mix right, that is what a professional DJ is supposed to do, it's not your job to do it for them and tell them what to play. The guy on the decks on Friday didn't even try to "read" the room. Several of us told him directly that he'd got the mix wrong, it doesn't take a genius to work out that playing acid house and techno to a group of thirty somethings is probably not the best choice of genre. A professional DJ will play a whole range of genres and tempos, gauge from the reaction of the room what is working and them slant the set towards that.

You've done nothing wrong Terry, just pass on to the club that you've had a lot of negative comments about the music and hope that the message gets through for the next one.

Hi Keefy - i know the critisism is not directed at me - not a lot i can do about the music, nor is there a lot more i can do to make sure people enjoy themselves. All I can do is organise the venue and encourage people to attend, after that it is up to the individuals to enjoy themselves - afterall, you can take a horse to water but you cant make it drink!!

The DJ also registered with POF so he could help me with the advert - I know he will read these comments soon and no doubt will reply with his thoughts on how it can be better next time. So watch this space....................................!!

Yes i have thought about some sort of 'ice breaker' ... I am sure that someone reading this can come up with a better idea???
I thought that one was worthy of a thread all of its own So I've started an 'Icebreaker' thread and let's see if we can get some ideas for the next one

Pof At Roydon Mill

Well what can i say another great night Terri and looking forward to the next one which i will call you later today to confirm date as im sure people are keen to know when it will be, And yes when the next one is upon us the decor will be all finished and looking plush no doubt
Also i will be looking at the music policy to see if we can please everyone in room , as it seems just one person was upset by the music that night even though im sure people danced almost all night apart from when i did clear the floor instantly as mentioned although it was a request from somebody there that night i will not play again for that reason and never liked song anyway and yes it was techno beat well done that person who picked up on that i played one techno song must have have stood tapping foot for ages to work that out lol anyway moving on i have been a dj for a long time and never play music to please myself and always read the room
so some people must have heard things wrong when i played eighties and seventies classics not as a medley but in full, I think the evening went well and thanks for the comment sir i will however make sure that everyone gets a taste of their music for the next one if i have a requested song and its a good one i will play it if i dont have a song then i will say i don't have that. Im not the type of dj who says yes play that soon when full well knowing havent got the song hate that so much. In finishing this reply i hope more people can attend and make pof at the mill the best around please watch for next one as for ideas i would like to try a BBQ

Thanks to all that Attended

DJ dab,
Been there, done that. I also had a floor packed with folks. Played a request and the floor emptied. Not a nice feeling. I thought you did a good job.
One thing I might suggest? Keep gauging the the way people are talking. There were time where the music was incredibly loud and people were shouting to give their orders at the bar. I know when the floor was crowded it dampers the music, but when the floor is sparse, the sound carries louder. I had a mentor once told me, every once in awhile, do a quick 30 second walk around during a record. Look at people sitting at the table and how they are talking to each other. This is by all mean not a critism, just so light points of interest. I personally like the music and if you want to guage MY taste, I liked the techno and 80's stuff. Looking forward the next gig!
