| How long after a snack is it OK to work out? Posted: 6/21/2008 3:31:44 PM | For a snack that light, 10-20 mins is enough. Just dont over do it. The stomach needs blood to digest food and if you have a stomach full of food before you train you will feel slugish.
Take in your nutrition after your workout to repair those muscles ;)

| How long after a snack is it OK to work out? Posted: 6/22/2008 10:36:12 AM | body works on the demands put on it. When the body is sick (say a heart attack) the digestive system is one of the very first systems to shut down so the body can concentrate on its attacker. That's why when we got heart attacks in at night time and due to CPR vomitus occurs. We'll ask the person who brought them in when they'd last eaten. Frequently totally undigested bacon and eggs, yes even hours and hours earlier.
So even a light snack is going to be put on hold if you put a demand (like work out) on the body. Either wait after the snack or wait to eat after the workout. The latter being the best.
Having said that it is an old wife's tale to not go swimming after you eat as you'll get a cramp and drown. You can go in the water, just don't do your olympic trials after that picnic lunch!

| How long after a snack is it OK to work out? Posted: 6/22/2008 11:07:53 AM | | gtadaizee , you can safely eat something an hour before a workout. Of course most people don't eat protein prior to a workout but afterwards. A light meal before a workout will benefit not hinder. Fruits like bananas are great because they fuel the body, there's enough carbs for the workout. Feeling light headed doesn't mean a person has a heart attack lol | |

| How long after a snack is it OK to work out? Posted: 6/23/2008 4:39:37 AM | I was using heart attack as merely an example of the way the body works, not that you'd have a snack etc.....That would be silly coming from me with my background.
If you can do a work out with no discomfort then its a go but fruits, etc... can't fuel the body if they are not getting digested due to the pump in your body switching over to a more demanding action. . Does a banana or any food digest within an hour and be turned into useable energy?

Posted: 6/23/2008 8:48:52 AM | | You had a "good" meal which is still being digested, providing energy, and that will be within you for the next 12-24 hours at least, your muscular and liver stores of glycogen are probably full, why can't you get through a workout without a snack before or after?

| How long after a snack is it OK to work out? Posted: 6/23/2008 1:06:25 PM | | I try to wait at least 20-30 minutes or I get stomach pain. It all depends on your body though. Just try waiting different time intervals and see which ones works best for you. | |

| How long after a snack is it OK to work out? Posted: 6/23/2008 3:53:49 PM | | I differs for everyone... When I started doing long endurance events, one of the hardest things for me to get used to was eating during a run or bike leg. Now I can pretty much toss down a PBJ sandwich without so much as a gurgle. | |

| How long after a snack is it OK to work out? Posted: 6/23/2008 7:01:13 PM | | Technically it really depends on what the snack is. Preferable it should be combination of protein and conplex carbs with good source of fat about an hour - 1.5 hour before meals. Personally I eat about 1-2 hours before then slam down VPX NO shot gun,BCAAS,, glutamine, ALCAR on my way to the gym. By time i hit the gym I am reved up and rearing to go. Then post workout i use BCAA/glutamine and creatine. | |
