The best thing to do, if at all possible, is find a local running store. The Staff at a good running store will be able to fit you to the correct shoe for your foot and gait. The right shoe can make a huge difference in injury prevention.

What he said.

Also: When you go to the store, let the person who is fitting you know the surface you will be running on and the weekly mileage you expect to be doing. Low-mileage shoes should cost less than shoes built for high mileage. Stick with the familiar name brands: Saucony, Asics, New Balance, Nike, etc. The New Balance brand builds its women's shoes with a women's last (shoe form) that accounts for the narrower heel that women have as compared to men.

A good running shoe store will let you run in the shoes before you buy them, so make sure you take them for a spin in the parking lot or inside the store.

My personal preference has always been Asics, but you should get what feels right to you. You can check out shoe reviews at "Runner's World's" Web site. Another place for good shoe information is a retail site: roadrunnersports.com.

Happy running!

I'd recommened Adidas, they've always did the trick for me.

But best is probally just go to the store and have them sized and fitted so you can get a better feel.

Good Luck! I always get excited when I go running shoe shopping!

I've mostly worn New Balance for the past 8 years or so since going to a pedorthist and getting custom made orthotic inserts. I was told New Balance shoes are best if you have any pronation (feet rolling to the side)

I always get excited when I go running shoe shopping!

Me too!

Asics is my all-time favorite. Right now I have two pair, GT-2120 and Equation 2.

Everyone here wears Asics. Whichever mark is in your price range.

I currently have in various states of wrecked Kayano 13s, 2110 and 1110s. They last about 9 months of hard wear, the soles just wear through eventually. If you are not pushing them as hard, they will probably last longer.

Time for a new pair, not sure I really want to splash for a new pair of Kayanos, although sometimes it is just a case of whichever mark is available in my size. The Kayanos are the most comfortable for me, but not by a whole lot and everyones foot is different.

Don't take anyone's advice on running shoes. There are only two types of people to ask, and both you must ask in person so they can examine your feet or running style.
Ask either a podiatrist or someone qualified who works at a RUNNING SHOE store (not an ordinary shoe store). A place that will give you a treadmill test would be the best.
If you wear running shoes that don't properly match with your feet, there are DOZENS of problems you could easily run into. I am a victim of this.
I took the advice of another personal trainer at my job that runs marathons, figuring that they of all people would know what they are talking about. They told me to get Asics. I ended up developing peroneal tendonitis because I unknowingly over-pronate, and the model of shoe was not for my feet, although I'm sure they are a great shoe for some.
I ended up limping around for a couple weeks, physical therapy for a few months, orthotics from my podiatrist, and a pair of lightweight stability sneakers, the New Balance 1223's.
Don't go through what I did.

I've had good luck with New Balance myself. If you can afford to I would stop in at a local New Balance store, have them put you on their machine, and pick up their recommendations.

Me personally, I destroy running shoes so fast that buying $100-$150 shoes is rather out of my reach. My running patterns vary but I've gone through a pair of running shoes in a little over a month. I hurt my knee back in January so I haven't been logging nearly as many miles lately and I can tell a big difference in how long my shoes last.

Asics are nice and light but they don't stand up to long distances and wear out really, really fast IMHE.

I am in the "NEW BALANCE" camp too as well. I find that New Balance lasts longer than the other brands that I do use.

I recently got a pair of Puma Complete Eutopia, and I love them. It's a fairly new shoe that's good for neutral efficient runners with a normal to high arch. Runner's World says it's a Performance Training type, while Puma says it's a Comfort Neutral Cushioning shoe. It's very flexible, light, and cushioned, though with hardly any support or control. Many owners, including me, have had to get this at least 1/2 size larger than normal.

What I did was intense research on the kind of shoe I needed, read lots of shoe reviews, then went and tried on lots of shoes, about 3 different days. Finally settled on the Eutopia for the best fit and comfort for the type of shoe I was looking for and needed.

This shoe feels so good that it makes me want to run more, longer and faster...it's amazing how having a shoe that's well-suited to your body and running style will free you to excel. I'm now starting to train to do a 5K and then probably a 10K.

Hi,

Asics have always been the best for me, however, everyone is different, so it will really depend upon yourself!

Best plan is to visit a specialist running shop ( most major towns/cities will have one ) take along the running shoes you use just now, or another pair of flat shoes you've worn for a while. They should ask how far you run, how often, what kind of surfaces, if you've ever had any lower limb injuries. Then by looking at the wear on the soles of your current shoes, ascertain what ones are best for you!

Hope this is of some help :)

I went to my local running store and I got a pair of Brooks GTS 8's. I saw a pair of those Asics Kayanos, but I decided if running becomes a serious passion with me again, I will buy a pair of those in the future.

For my stride/foot type which is neutral they recommended a standard cushion shoe, and I narrowed the most comfortable shoe for my foot down to the nike max moto 5. On average your typical running shoe will last for about 600km before it no longer provides the proper cushion on your feet. So depending on the distance you run per week, you may want to keep track of how much mileage you have logs on your shoes. It can be hard to tell by just looking at the shoe to see if it needs to be replaced, so keep that in mind.
Definitely like what a few above have stated before, you should take a trip to your local running store to be properly fitted. Not always is the most expensive shoe the right shoe for you. another tip for people who run alot. Every year shoe manufacturers make improvements to every model of shoe. Which can actually ruin that model of shoe for your particular foor type. So when you go to buy a fresh pair, always try on as many shoes as you can, because they are always changing. The right shoe can make you feel like your running on springs. It takes the impact away in all the right places.
My parents are big runners so I learn as much as I can.

I hope you find the pair thats right for you!

The pair that fits you!!! You cannot take anyone's advice on shoes. My advice is go to a running specialty store and get fitted properly. Not some sports store with a bunch of kids on commission sales. Ask them if they can tell you which shoes control pronation and supination? If they look totally confused, DO NOT shop there.

I so agree with this! If you can find a running room store near you (I think they're in the US as well) or any good specialised running store, you'll be ok. You may pay more for the shoes but trust me, your feet, hips, legs will thank you for it. If you're serious about running, you should expect to pay the $$$. Don't buy heavily discounted shoes, they may be very old and the gel/cushioning may be brittle.

I have a pair of Asic gel GT-2130 that are like slippers, I've been running consistently 3 times a week since May and have now recently completed my second 5K run and they're great. Not one blister, no burning feet, nothing. I bought another pair, last year's model again from Asic and disaster, terrible, they hurt my feet terribly. I was very lucky to be able to return them at the store to exchange for another pair like the one I bought originally. So even in the same brand, you may experience problems. That's why I'll never order shoes online. Not worth the money.

I'm now training for my first 10K race in September and I'm confident I'll be able to do it in good time. In fact, I'm more looking forward to completing it!

nike free 5.0s. Just like running barefoot, trains your feet without disruption of your natural biomechanics of your foot strike.

ASICS ASICS ASCIS...they work for me!

I hope they continue with the way they been making them for the past 10 years. They work best for me, for now!

I'm currently enjoying a pair of asics, but my Nike Air Persues were my faves (next time I find a pair I like as much, I'm buying three pair.) I've had new balance pairs and HATED them.

It really is a very individual thing- pronation matters. As many have mentioned, go to a store that specialises in running shoes- not "athletic shoes" but running shoes.

Though admittedly, I'm also a fan of super feet insoles.

Just bought another pair of Asics. Got fitted with all the fancy technology stuff... and it still came down to only a couple of pairs in my size, so I went with the Asics.

Kinsei this time... supposedly the fanciest marque. Woo. I am excited. It must be nice to have a choice in running shoes. Thankfully, she took $100 off the price and they were a relative bargain at $199. For you crazy foreigners, with the current exchange rate, that is about US$196.

Still, they are shiny and look nice and I doubt there will be any dramas.

For me personally I prefer Brooks. You need to consider where you will be running ...at the gym on a treadmill or outside on a track or even on trails. You also need to have a professional(someone trained to fit shoes) measure your feet. You do not necessarily have to buy the most expensive pair out there...there are good moderately priced ones. One thing to remember is that the cushion often wears out before the shoe so you need to replace them about every 500 miles according to Runner's magazine. Good luck!!
