Would you drive an electric car or truck?

If all remained the same, vehicle types, looks prices, etc and fill up stations replacing current gas stations and the electricity would cost about 50 to 100 dollars per month would you trade the old or buy and drive an electric vehicle or would you keep using/ buying combustion engine powered vehicles?
Would the fuel cost be the most important factor in your decision?

Sure - I guess. The idea is that the electric car is more environmentally friendly. No, fuel cost is only one of the most important considerations in buying a car, especially the way things are getting so, so ugly at the pumps.

I definetly would! However, If I were to do some travelling/driving. I'd want to/need to use a regular one for the distances.

I had the opportunity to spend 6 hours driving around in a Japanese model hybrid car a couple of weeks ago. The strange part was that the car was so silent when running in electric mode that I kept asking the driver if the car had stalled because I couldn't hear any normal engine or tranny noises ... no starting, stopping, slowing down or revving up noises whatsoever.

The owner said it runs strictly on battery power to approx. 60 km after which it starts to add gas power as needed. He said the hybrid car cost him an extra $8,000 but that included all the bells & whistles & in the long run, the gas savings made it well worth the extra cost. It drove well & was a very smooth ride. I found with the car being so silent, it was a more peaceful ride too because we didn't have to talk over the engine noise. So yeah, I'd probably get one.

electricity would cost about 50 to 100 dollars per month

wow... I think I only spend about $40 a month on gas for my little car right now; unless I go out of town.

^^^^^ the question and suggestions are hypothetical.....
a fill up for most cars today is over $ 50 and a full size pick up with dual tanks about $180.

C'mon people, the laws of physics still apply...larger vehicle more power needed to move it, more miles driven more fuel consumption.... and about covering lager distances I did suggest we would have " fill up stations replacing current gas stations"

it is not illegal to drive an electric car
some cars manufactured by some companies, electric or combustion engine are not 'legal' because they may not meet certain safety standards

Actually just finished watching a couple of programs on how the CANADIAN goverment has not approved a CANADIAN maker of such hybred vehicle. Yet, they just let a AMERICAN manufacturer slip into OUR country with their vehicle. Now the goverment is backtracking trying to save their sorry bums.

Do you know which "safety standards" the goverment is using to stop the distrubution of said vehicles ML????? I wish I could remember more of where this Canadian company was located.

And yes, I would drive an electric vehicle,,,especially when I know it's possible to make them with some,,,,ahem,,,,gonads. Not as much gonads as the truck I am driving now,but it will still get me up the snow shed on the Coq with my "stuff" loaded up.

Sorry Walts I really don't know, but responded to somuchtosay past after reading the link.
Have seen an electric pick up truck (Chevy, homebuilt conversion) a while back; it had about 150 kw (200 hp) no troubles with acceleration or pull, full charge gave about 120 km I was told.

I don't really know much about the possibilities, but most our trains run on electric power generated by a diesel generator, so it would be plausible to think most cars and truck could be propelled by an electric motor.

I would in a heart beat !
it would be awsome . almost not maintinance and a silent ride, althow it would only be good for short drives , but considering I hardly would drive more then 200km's a day it would be great.
lots or torque right off the line!

There is a electric car manufactured in B.C. called the "IT"
basically it is a fast golf cart, with 4 doors etc. aluminum body and is legal for local streets but not freeways. I t can only top out at about 35 mph . the problem with these vehicles is battery longivity. batteries are expensive and short lived.

Hey I’m not gay or anything but as a commuter car to zip around town I would own one in a heart beat. I would have to tint the windows though.
I would assume that the boom system and the neon light kit would have to be ditched as they suck juice but I could live without that. Christ I could always sing that dam song that keeps swimming in my head.

I would drive / own an electric car in a second if I could. I know the car I want and if the Canadian Gov. would pull their heads from their bums for the car I speak of we could see what a real electric car is capable of.
I want a Tesla Roadster.

Nothing better than having the equivilant of .02 cents equivilant fuel consumption per Mile. (figure the conversion in Km). Or how about 0 - 100 in under 4 seconds, or how about over 250 miles per charge with a top speed better than that of most cars today powered by gasoline..... hmm makes you wonder what the electric car is really capable of.
Even Jay Leno likes his.

^^^ now that's a nice car...but at $109,000 plus taxes and freight to get it here i think that even IF there were no governmental issues at play, most of us simply couldn't afford one. they need to make a viable, efficient electric vehicle at the lower end of the scale (priced under $25,000). i really don't think that the people who can afford to drop in excess of $100,000 at the car dealership are feeling the gas price pinch quite the way those in a lower economic bracket do.

sure you can talk about savings in fuel costs, but even with that factored in, it would take almost 100,000 km (at current gas prices) to pay for the difference...nevermind the issue of where to get the thing serviced or the cost of parts. i'd love an electric car, but with the current options, it's just not viable for the average consumer.

This new hybrid systems are very appealing, I would get the same type of truck the Dakota in an electric if they were made, and drive it locally to save on gas for one. However, however, I would ALSO, keep the gas burning DAK, and use it for distance drives, say if I wanted to go holidays, or out of city and province drives.

The new hybrid, has some power behind it, however, does it have the power in it to climb the hilly highways, like the Coquhalla for one. Maybe, but just barely, that is where the old gas burner comes in handy.

So ya, I would probably get a new hybrid make of DAK, but, I would also keep the old gas burning DAK as well.

One for fuel economy, locally, and one for power/performance, when driving long distance of out of town/province drives.

Hey Dak these electric vehicles have a lot of torque, I couldn’t see them having a problem with hills.
As they don’t rely on gears to shift to get the power band needed to climb hills they have straight power at all times.
I saw a test truck on the island that snapped it’s rear diff twice in a day! That’s pretty impressive for an electric vehicle.
There’s a guy out my way that converted his rice rocket to electric and that thing moves!

^^^ the power issue can be resolved by a fitting transmission, ie hydraulic
depending on the e-motor, the torque is constant, from the low rpm to the top end.

A transmission (gears) would only help efficiency and allow for a smaller motor and less energy consumption.

I doubt very much that the motor to wheels power transmission would be a technical problem to solve, but I'm no expert...

For sure! I'd totally drive an electric car, at least if they developed charging stations at gas stations or whatever (or else I'd just use it for short-range commutes in town). Actually, check out this car that a California company is developing, very sci-fi looking.

Yes we've noticed this from some of your posts!

That’s the great thing about an electric motor, there’s no need for a transmission. They can run to infinity with a single reduction gear.

Kinda like the days of go-carts where you just step on the gas and away you go. No real rev limits.

When I factor in the overall cost of the Tesla Roadster (even at it's hefty price tag) and then take into account the costs of driving a car on gas at todays prices (which I might add will never go down... when have they?) I come up with an overall price tag after 5 years of ownership that makes the car far more affordable than most if not any descent sports car on the market.
Lets say you average $120 a week in fuel costs ($6720.00 roughly per year or $33600 over 5 years just for fuel)
Factor in other items needed to maintain and drive a fuel burning car such as oil changes every 3 months over a 5 year period (average oil change $60 over 5 years every three months $720) misc. parts and other items ascociated with fuel cars ie. air filters ,spark plugs ,aircare and whatever else you can think of lets say that would average out to around $700 over 5 years you end up with $35020 of money spent in 5 years on a relatively descent fuel burning car for the average lower mainland driver with a 15 km commute to work. (These numbers will be higher for those living on the other side of the bridge commuting to Vancouver area by a considerable amount).
Now take into account the Gov. (I think still does this) gives you a rebate on a green vehicle and you knocked that big price tag down some more.
Yes the problem is coming up with the initial purchase amount but if your financing it over a 5 year term like any other vehicle then your not really financing a $105,000 car your financing a $65,000 car which is about what the average good sports car goes for these days.
