| Today's Michigan Question for the Genders Posted: 6/25/2008 9:52:43 AM | | Ok, so you're used to something in your lifestyle, then you have a companion, significant other, spouse living with you.... You agree on many things. Then the discussion comes up about the bathroom. The question for today is, should I leave the toilet seat up, or leave the toilet seat down? Of course, this is after you've finished your task(s) at hand (no pun). Be gentle in your answers. No gender bashing allowed. | |

| Today's Michigan Question for the Genders Posted: 6/25/2008 11:21:40 AM | Yes i agree......lid down please! A toilet is something we all 'eliminate' in, and i really do not care to look down into something that we all 'do that' into every time i walk into the bathroom and i do not care how clean it is. | |

| Today's Michigan Question for the Genders Posted: 6/25/2008 3:01:17 PM | | Everyone in our house puts down the seat and closes the lid. It's a pet peeve of mine to see the dog drinking out of the bowl. The only way to make him stop, is to close the entire thing, every single time. | |

| Today's Michigan Question for the Genders Posted: 6/25/2008 3:42:30 PM | Both genders should put the LID down. That, of course, will take care of having to wonder if you should put the SEAT down or not, as closing the lid will put the seat down IF it was up.
They make those plush furry lid covers that match the mats for a reason.. to be seen when the commode is not in use

| Today's Michigan Question for the Genders Posted: 6/25/2008 7:13:13 PM | Geez, I've been married twice......I am just happy if males manage to actually hit the target area......I've given up on the amenities.....
PS The cats say they prefer the seat up for their drinking pleasure..... eeeeeewwwwww.....but after all, I guess for animals, toilet water isn't the worst thing that crosses their tongues.....

| Today's Michigan Question for the Genders Posted: 6/26/2008 3:42:47 AM | I had company over one time (this was years ago when i still had my cats) who used my bathroom but didnt put the seat back down (if its down when you went in, please put it back down when you leave it ). My cat followed me in there sometime later. She went to jump up on the seat (cus she was used to it being down!) butttttt,,lo' and behold it was up, and in that very split second she knew and no joke,,,all 4 of her limbs stuck out the sides like you'd see in a cartoon!!! I dont think id ever laughed so hard in my life!
Btw,,,,when i do go visiting other ppl's houses,,,i put the seat down just like i would at my own house.

| Today's Michigan Question for the Genders Posted: 6/26/2008 5:45:58 AM | I was hoping for a better response return from our male gender... As the fourm originator, it behooves me to comment, so here goes: I think we should all "aim" to be considerate of others. While we ourselves may not think it's important to put that seat down, if you default to the best case scenario, that is, putting that seat AND lid down, you end up with a new habit that actually may change your own standard. Just like putting your seat belt on regularly in the car, putting your toilet seat down isn't a big deal. I personally don't want to view any remnants of the last user. And my seat at home has the fuzzy cover on it, for appearance. I don't leave the seat up because my hair brush sits on the tank, if it falls in, I end up having a bad hair day.
So i suppose we could broaden the scope of the discussion to the next level, that is, the residual odor left behind... Should we open the window, or spray the place down with Lysol? Ladies first, ....comments?

| Today's Michigan Question for the Genders Posted: 6/26/2008 7:24:17 AM | I live alone and I put the toilet seat down and it does bother me when other males come to my house and leave it up. It also bothers me when someone puts the lid down. I don't really care what anyone else does with theirs and if I use someones bathroom I leave it the way I fould it. If the lid is down I leave it that way, if the seat is up I leave it that way. You should always respect what others do in their homes and if you don't like how they live don't go there.
I could care less about the lid mainly because my toilet never gets so nasty that I need to hide it and I don't use it as seat so what difference does it realy make? If your toilet is so bad that you need to use the lid to cover it I would suggest you clean it instead!!!!!!!!

| Today's Michigan Question for the Genders Posted: 6/26/2008 7:42:17 AM | You can have the most cleanest toilet in the world and im sure most of us here (well id hope! lol) keep a nice clean bathroom but:
Always flush with the lid down. According to Charles Gerba, PhD, a professor of microbiology at University of Arizona in Tucson, flushing the toilet with the lid up is not wise. "Polluted water vapor erupts out of the flushing toilet bowl and it can take several hours for these particles to finally settle -- not to mention where," he says. "If you have your toothbrush too close to the toilet, you are brushing your teeth with what's in your toilet."
^^^ that right there is a HUGE reason to keep the lid down!! They had a documentary on TV a while back on Germs and in one segment they did it on bathroom germs and i kid you not, if you'd actually seen how those particles DO float in the air and settle on whatever you have in your bathroom, you'd be thoroughly grossed out!

| Today's Michigan Question for the Genders Posted: 6/26/2008 8:11:44 AM | Awwwww Ripey!!! Ewww, phoo, yuck, gross, blech, barf, thanks for sharing that tidbit! I was going to the store today but new toothbrushes weren't on my list...they are NOW!
ROFL I just read this to my 9 year old son...the worst culprit in the house, he was totally grossed out and threw his toothbrush away and closed the lid...maybe this had solved my problem with him?

| Today's Michigan Question for the Genders Posted: 6/26/2008 8:22:49 AM | im a custodian in an industrial plant.. and there are NO lids on them toilets...
To me.. the seat up means the toilet has been sanitized!!

| Today's Michigan Question for the Genders Posted: 6/26/2008 9:09:55 AM | Ripley, thank you so much for sharing. I am totally grossed out reading the updated info. after just eating my bbq chicken sandwich.... So here's some extra to gross us all out.
Ok, given what you said is true, what happens in fast food joints where signs are posted, "Employees Must Wash Hands"? Shall we say the overspray on those powerflushing toilets get on their clothes, arms, sink faucets, doorknobs? And then they transport those germs to the customer serving area to present you with your favorite meal?
YUK! No more fast food for me!

| Today's Michigan Question for the Genders Posted: 6/26/2008 10:31:08 AM | Rip Rip Rip, its true that vapors come out of your toilet when you flush it. That being said different researchers have differing views on the effects of the "eruption" caused by flushing a toilet.
Fact, most bathroom surfaces don't support the growth of germs and bacteria since they aren't porous. Bacteria needs moisture to grow. If they hit a surface and dry they die.
Fact, even closing the lid won't prevent the spread of germs and bacteria in most cases. When the lit is opened the trapped vapor escape.
Now here is John's theory, like it or not.
If you close your lid before flushing you actually cause an environment which is more likely to promote the growth of bacteria. Without ventilation the lid and seat remain moist for a longer period of time. Therefore the next time you need to use the toilet and have to lift the lid you have a greater chance of coming in contact with them. Also when you sit on the seat there is a greater chance you can get a bug up your AZZ!!!
I think too many people become paranoid when they see some studies concerning things they think are gross. Unless you are going to live in a bubble you can't get away from germs and bacteria. I'm not going to spend my life being worried about the effects of flushing a toilet with the lid up or down. If you look at all the studies you are damned if you do and damned if you don't. I will still leave my lid up but if I go somewhere I will leave things the way I found them.
