Such a thing as too many vegetables?
Posted: 6/26/2008 1:32:26 PM
Lately I've been really trying to restrict my diet and caloric intake (please don't get on me about this being unhealthy for someone my age, size, whatever. I apreciate the concern but truly, I've heard it all before and it's not the purpose of this thread.) because of this most of my meals consist mainly of veggies, mostly cucumber and celery. My question is: is it possible to have too many veggies? I eat lots of veggies, undoubtedly more than the recomended 6 servings, and very little from most other food groups.

Thankyou for your time.

If that's all you're eating... you need to eat them all day long.

Sorry to go off topic..... but..... You need to add more to your nutritional intake.

To answer your question, no, U can't get too many vegs. But you should try to get more of a variety, carrots, brocolli, califlower, and green pepper & pickles, just to name a few, also try beans to get protein. I know what you are doing by eating celery & cucumber, they take as much calories to burn from digestion as they contain. But you do need nutrients to keep electrloites in balance & mantain a healthy heart, be as skin & bones as you like. mores vegs won't change that.

Good!

Glad someone cares enough about you to do that.

And you know, there are ways to make sure you are getting enough without pushing you into that "I am eating too much" mode. Hell, a spoon full of peanut butter is better than no protine at all.

Good luck...

A spoonful of peanut butter is usually about a tablespoon sized amount if not more. That's 100 calories right there. It's not a 'small thing', atleast not to me. But again, this is going off topic. The question was simply whether or not it's okay to eat that many veggies or if it's taxing on the digestive system or something.

There was a show on BBC where the particapants ate pounds yes pounds of vegetables everyday as an experiment on how to eat like our ancestors. Who ate mostly fruits and vegetables. But they were monitored by a doctor and got a lot more variety than cukes and celery.
If that's what you're going to do you need to have a broad variety of vegetables and legumes. You won't gain any weight but you'll certainly help the health of your heart and other organs if you can get all of those nutrients you need.

That's what... a 200 calorie a day diet?

I'm sorry, but you can't post what you did and think that people won't be concerned about your health.

That would be like someone asking if 5 cheeseburgers are too few and to please not tell threm the health risks involved.

Celery has very little nutrition value, same goes with lettuce. You want to eat wide range of vegetables. Beet has a lot of sugar but once in a while is ok. You can't get fat by eating plenty of vegetables. You may weight more at the scale since there's tons of food in your system. You should add some olive oil or flax seeds with your vegetables. These oils won't make you fat. You shouldn't eat the same vegetables day after day, you really need to eat wide range of vegetables get their full value. If you are worried about not getting proper nutrients I suggest you get some Chlorella from the health food store. It won't make you fat all and supply with all the amino acids, minerals and vitamins you will need. Or you can order Dr Ben's Greens it well worth the money I take it regularly.

Since your brain is made of 60% fat (1/3 of it omega3 is fatty acids) you need fat in your diet in order you be able to have regular brain function. Without it you become forgetful, your synapses grow lazy, your learning ability slows down, and generally you'll end up goofy.
So eat some real food girl, even as a side dish to your vegetables... before you become one.

"mostly cucumber and celery"

? Way too limited, which you seem to realize. You can't eat too many veg. They are all good, and alkalizing and mostly anti-inflammatory.

Especially now in the summr, carrots, green/red bell peppers, onions, garlic, eggplant, tomatoes, berries, peaches.

You need a wide variety of fresh, whole foods of veg and fruits, raw or slightly warmed in by radiant or convection heat. For oils, there are nuts and seeds, and their oils. Nuts, seeds, beans also provide protein. Olives and olive oil. Mustard.

Keep that up, and within a couple months, you will cause changes in your gene expression FOR THE BETTER, as recent study showed. This area is known as "epigenetics" and it' a hot area now in health/nutrition/disease treatments.

In a recent study of men on special diet, in just 3 months, they noted changes in the expression/activation of 500 genes.

Add some nuts and fruits, you need a reliable source of protein. Rice and beans might work for you if you avoid meat.

You must consume sufficient calories or your vital organs will begin shutting down. Renal kidney failure, heart failure, pnemonia, breaking bones, the list goes on and on until starvation.

Save yourself. You deserve to have a long life. No one expects perfection, don't put that burden of perfection on yourself. It's not real.

You look very thin, trust me don't restrict on your diet. Veggies are really good but you do need to eat more. You need to include protein, carbs and fat. Just need to tweak the numbers to fit your goals. I don't know what your goals are but being too skinny is not healthy. It's good your eating every 2-3 hours but add some protein and carbs somewhere. Tuna, egg whites, cottage cheese, chicken, oatmeal, bananas, brown rice, olive oil, almonds, etc. At least eat protein and carbs in morning (most important meal) and afternoon. I am sure people would help if we know what your goal is. Anyways, good luck! :)

Given you are anorexic, it is unlikely you could possibly eat too much of anything, let alone vegetables. Good luck with that though.

Yes. I have been diagnosed with anorexia.

But honestly, the point of this thread is not to have people scold me for my eating disorder nor offer suggestions for how I can 'get better'. I'm receiving help outside of pof, though I truly do appreciate the concern.

I can't really add anything new but just reiterate what everyone else has already said.

Lots of vegetables is good, nothing but the same vegetables is bad. I'm glad you're getting help with this and wish you the very best of luck with it.

Do not worry, he was having a dig at me, not you. He just tries to be subtle about it. That you admitted it openly now short circuits his efforts.

I have been where you are, hence the observation and the wishing of good luck. Nothing tastes as good as thin feels. Hard mindset to break once you get in it.

Does anyone have any good recipes out there? A good recipe can make the difference between choking down the veggies and loving them?

Jessica Seinfeld just put out a cook book called "Deceptively Delicious: Simple Secrets to Get Your Kids Eating Good Food". It talks about sneaking veggies into regular foods.

However, for myself, I just started dealing with it. Meaning, I would just eat them. I hate tomatos.... but I put them in salads and on wraps and whatever I can.
