| feet going numb on elliptical Posted: 6/26/2008 5:50:00 PM | My feet tend to go numb, especially toward the toes, when I'm on the elliptical. Is it my shoes or my technique? This doesn't happen when I run in the park or on the treadmill.

However, I don't mean to scare you but do any neurological issues run in your family? They do in mine and that is why I am asking, mostly strokes. Numbness in the fingers and toes can be a sign of many things. It is important to pay attention to what you are feeling. I would start with different shoes and see if that makes any difference. | |

You back should be straight. Your hips and knees should be relaxed. Sounds like to me you're try to workout too hard. Learn to breath so you won't have bloackages which can cause pain. You may want to do some breathing exercises before starting your workout. There's plenty of yoga breathing techniques you can learn. | |

Had a trainer tell me to focus on my foot motion... most likely your putting all the pressure in your toes... push evenly with your feet...or push harder with your heels until u can learn not to use toes so much. | |

I would personally advocate not continuing exercise when you start losing feeling in body parts. The body does not adapt to neural system damage or circulatory problems if they are the situation. If it continues even with loose clothing and footwear, seek medical advice. | |

You tend to lean into the elliptical, therefore putting alot of pressure on your toes. A trick I use to make sure Im pushing evenly through my feet... I don't even mess w. the handles. I stand straight and focus on my core and swing my arms as if I were jogging outside. It's hard to push w. your toes in this motion unless you want to fall;) | |

When you walk or even jog the pressure goes to the heel of your foot then gets distrubuted to the rest. On the eliptical you lean forward and this puts the pressure on the front of your foot and not the heel.
Sprinters can sometimes get a little numb after a sprint because when you sprint your heels never touch the ground, your on the balls on your feet the whole time. | |

When I run outdoors in the winter and it is really cold - saying freezing or just below - my feet don't go numb and I cannot wear gloves, so I know my blood flow is good. | |

Basically over time you get the same effects as if putting pressure when sitting on one of your legs. Circulation gets cut and you tend to get the numbness feeling. That's when you have pressure on your toes over a longer period of time. | |
