So what do you thinks Senior fishies? What I thought 20 years ago to be a bit of a fad has turned into a pretty much mainstream accepted practice of self embellishment.
I have seen so many ladies, who at hitting mid life crisis, gone out and just thrown caution to the wind, and get a tat. and not always small and femine. One gal got a huge wolf medallions that covered 1/3 of her back, just on a whim. Another, her whole chest with a lioness. Another, 3 tats and a few piercings all within a few weeks. Strangely they were all about 45 when they did this.
I was amazed to find the conservative,M.D. I was seeing at 40, to have a lovely 22 K
gold ring through one nipple, or the very out of shape "good ole boy" to have a "tramp
stamp" (my daughter told me this name) decorating his lower back, just above his swim trunks! What surprises! I`m all for self expression and individuality. I have none myself and doubt that I would get one- not into pain.

So what do you think about older peeps getting decorated, and what are some of the unexpected ones you have run into.

LOL...well, I am not yet 45, but I did not get my first tat until I was about 36. For me, it was a matter of not wanting to settle for just any ink job...wanting to find a good artist and creating the perfect tat for me. (I have never gotten any designs from the books)

I have 5, and am planning on adding more. :)

I do not care for "tramp stamps" on men...ewww. :o(~

I grew up with grandparents who were inked...yes...even my grandmother...so it seems the norm for me...but I have seen some older folks get tats that just cracked me up!

I love it! If you want to do it, then go for it. Age does not matter. I just recently got one myself, at 45! Always wanted one so I finally did it!

D got one when she was 38, it looks awesome, especially if it has meaning. She is native american indian, and all hers have a native theme to them. The technology and the colors have come a long way in the past 10 yrs, and hers are full color and (i cant say it enough) they look amazing.

To each his or her own. If it makes you happy, then that's cool. Just make sure you don't regret it 10+ years down the road, I don't know if they are painful to remove. Then there are always those temporary tattoos.

I would never get a tattoo. I wouldn't judge any woman who has/gets one, but it's not for me.

Nothing wrong with getting tattoos whatever your age. In fact age should never be a consideration in anything you do IMO anyway. I love tattoos mine have commemorate specific events in my life, the latest being done a few weeks ago though it was 3 years finding the right design. Others do them for decoration, either way you do what you want for you, nothing wrong in that it's your life your body you decide. If you've got this far in life then you can reasonably say you have a rough idea whats good or bad for you. So go for it, whatever flies your kite eh?
Unexpected ones I know a lady at work ever so quiet wouldn't say boo to a goose, after being widowed for sometime took a world trip. Came back with a small traditional Japanese tatt done in the traditional manner (look it up). Now, she is slowly getting the full body suit and it looks incredible. I'm still trying to get the story of the first one but she's being coy, discrete? Though probably it won't be for as an exotic reason as the ones I've come up with so far lol
PS photos of body art always appreciated here

Tattoos are a fashion statement. I have thought about it but I do not think it suits my personality. But I had my nose pierced and now wear an emerald in my nose.

I've seen a few cute ones in places where they probably won't turn into a sagging mess, but for the most part they are usually rather ugly to begin with then they turn into something unrecognizable. My grandma had her third husband's name on her shoulder, her fourth husband hated it, she also had her SS# above her knee so when she applied for jobs she could lift her skirt and show the number...my grandmother was a rather wild and loose woman at one time.

Well... I don't have any grandkids yet but I have wanted a tat (a cherry with a splurt coming ut on my hip) since I was a teen. None of the men in my life liked the idea of a female with a tat so out of respect for them I refrained. Then my dad passed away on my 44th birthday and 6 months later I filed for divorce after my husband relapsed back into drug abuse. At that time I decided to get my first tat -- a small, delicate tribute to my father with a splash of lime green which I refer to as the color of my independence flag (but I won't go into that story now). I've had my mother's tribute designed for quite some time. It will be incorporated with my dad's after she has passed on.
I still was very close to, in fact still deeply in love with, my ex. He passed in an auto accident (sober) 3 months ago. I chose to get another tat. It's not just about him. It's about my life and growth as a person, a friendship that spanned 3 decades, and what I learned and took away from that relationship. It's not delicate. It required a 2.5 hour sitting. It consumes my right shoulder (back); black and gray style; a beat up 1966 Chevy PU with pinup style legs sticking out the window and the words "Comfort & crazy" (the title of a song whose words and writer are significant to me). It is very unusual and stunning. I've received a lot of compliments on it (and just got it a month ago).
I would like to get a tat with all 3 of my daughters' names incorporated but the design of it hasn't been as easy to come up with. Thirty years ago I never would have believed I would end up with the style and subjects I now bear (or bare as the case may be). I think I would have regretted the tat I envisioned in my youth so I'm glad I waited. I've heard they're addictive. I can't say I look forward to the process like a junkie and I don't want to be covered, but I'll get as many as I feel compelled to.
No, tats aren't for everybody. Yes, the process is a little painful but not as bad as some think or imply. Although with that first mark on my second tat I found myself thinking "WTH was I thinking?!" But that didn't last long.
Edited to add: A benefit to waiting until later in life to get tattooed is that it won't bleed into something unrecognizable by the time you're 50 or 60.

A co worker of mine told me a story of his grandma who liked to show off her tattoo. It was a mouse just below her hip. She wanted to show him, but he'd say "Eww, no!"
She insisted, though, and slid her pants down just below her hip. There was no tattoo, and she said, ""Oops! My Pvssy must've ate it!"

IceKrystals...I am amazed that people would waste their time writing someone to bash them for their personal choices...which do not affect them in any way! Grr!

Windroper...good points on the advantages of late in life tats...lol. I have four kidlets, and did not want any names, but wanted something to signify them...so I went with Chinese symbols for "son" and "daughter" which turned out incredibly nice.

My first ink job was one that my daughter and I got together, but different shading/coloring...a winged scarab from one of the Journey albums...since we are both die hard Journey fans. For us though, it signifies a LOT more...how parent/child can be friends...how you can close the gap between generations...and all of the phenomenal times we have had being groupies, together! ;)

Because I am Nana too...I am trying to come up with something for that aspect of my life...was thinking something like a "mothers ring" design which could be added to as needed cause right now I only have one grand kidlet. :)

But before anything else, I am getting a biker pin up gal, with her designed to resemble my own likeness. ;) I want something old school...Betty Page sort of sexy creature, in chaps, leather bustier, etc...hawt! ;)

I've never had the desire or the inclination to get a tattoo. And I still only have just one hole in each ear.

But had I been a teenager in this day and age, I would have gotten an eyebrow piercing. I absolutely love them.

My granddaughter just got one for her 14th birthday and it looks awesome on her.

But I neither love nor hate tattoos or piercings at any age and I can certainly understand why people get them.

It's just not for me that's all. To each their own.

I used to joke I was going to have a M tatoo on each butt cheek so when I bend over to pick something one of the kids had dropped it would spell... MoM....

and later when your legs were up in the air it would spell.... WoW!

I have no tats...but only cause I havent found something I would consider a good fit for me...most are overdone..unicorns, words, flowers, etc ...I want something unique.

My 17 year old daughter wants baby feet behind her ear and the birth date of her baby sister Joyce put in them (Joyce only lived 45 minutes). I would love that tatoo but would never consider stealing it from my daughter!

Always played with the idea of large tribal tat on my lower back... , but no. I remain un-inked. I do like the occasional henna tattoo, and that seems to satisfy the urge...

Well I am a Grandma and at 52 I got my first tatoo, it is on my ankle a rose vine made of my children and grandsons names. Even people who don't care for tat's like mine. The second on is a heart with bobwire tearing it open with one drop of blood, it is on my right back shoulder, heart ripped open now is all behind me! When they call a tat on lower a tramp stamp that is for girls who where their pants low and the thong and tat showing. So guess where I got my last one at 54 yrs. old, the men I date love them!
I like them and good if you do and sorry if you don't. Each to their own!!!!!!!

I just got a tat last fall at the ripe old age of 41. I don't really care what anyone else thinks of it.

No one thought I would go through with it, because I am too "goody, goody".

For me, mine is a Celtic Knot (triangle), with scroll work on either side of it, put in the infamous "tramp stamp" spot. I didn't put it there for that reason though. I put it there because I work with the elderly and didn't want to offend any of my patients, and this way it could be hidden when needed.

It has personal meaning to me, as a symbol of my heritage, and that's all that matters. I fully expect when I am old and decrepid in a nursing home, I will get compliments for it from the aides that wash my butt

I have had my tattoo for more than 10 years, and I am as thrilled with it as the day I got it. If others don't like it, it isn't going to effect me.

Several lady friends and I had a tattoo party and we all got tats. I can remember a beautify gal in the group said "when I am very old at least people will know by my tats that I was cool when I was young".

My daughter got her first one at 18... she told me via phone when I was out of town for a week and had time to calm down before I got home .. smart gal LOL! Since then she has gotten many more and each more beautiful than the other. That was 10 years ago and I have to say I do love them on her , maybe someday I'll get one too!! mmmm, it's the pain thing though that is stopping me.
