| Ixtapa, Mexico Posted: 9/8/2008 6:55:15 PM | I want to go but I can't! Will be going in December though. Ixtapa is a real touristy area of Mexico, very clean, lots of hotels and restaurants on the beach, night life, etc. Be careful swimming in the ocean there as the riptides, undercurrents can be very strong, and the surf can be rough as it is open ocean. You must go to Zihuatanejo at least once while you are there. It is only 10 minutes down the road and is another world. I is real Mexico, has 3 lovely beaches in a protected bay so the swimming is safe. great for snorkeling as well. Many authentic and very good restaurants, reasonably priced. In my opinion Zihuatanejo is THE place to be. You will love it I promise. Take a cab or a local bus and enjoy. The weather will be fantastic. Zihuatanejo was featured in the movie "Shawshank Redemption" Have a great time. | |

| Ixtapa, Mexico Posted: 9/10/2008 8:14:26 PM | There is a company called Best Day tours, or you can check with your hotel to see if they offer transportation. Ixtapa is a beautiful resort area, however it is becoming more and more commercialized. However you will find great fishing, as well as dining. I would recommend you go to the tourist website for more information.
Enjoy your vacation! | |

You can also rent little scooters somewhere to take around town, you won't get lost. Well, too lost. Last time I was there they had money exchange at the airport which worked out very well for us. I would have loved to tried gliding, there are also scuba diving which you can arrange in some hotels. Watch for little crocs - had one by our hotel in Z.
It's a beautiful place and I would love to go back there.

| Ixtapa, Mexico Posted: 9/17/2008 10:28:52 PM | Not a lot to do right in Ixtapa itself other than a few restaurants and nightclubs/bars...as others have said, it's mostly just a tourist hotel zone. That said, it is usually a lot less expensive than comparable resorts in Zihuatanejo and is only a short very cheap bus ride...or fairly reasonable taxi away. (I took the bus everywhere while there...very cheap, and rather an adventure in itself ) The beach is great for walks...goes on for miles...but not the safest area for swimming. There is however, a lot to be said for just laying around the pool. :O) Definitely head to Zihua more than once....great, rustic little town. Try to get there first thing in the morning to see the fishermen bring in their catch for the market. Lots of fishing charters at the dock in town as well. October should be pretty nice....still the tail end of the 'rainy season', still hot, but the hills will be green and covered with flowering shrubs. ( dry and brown most of the winter ) There is also a decent golf course in Ixtapa....right across the road from the hotels. | |

| Ixtapa, Mexico Posted: 9/20/2008 4:54:34 AM | I'm sorry, you said that Zihuatanejo is "real Mexico"
I'd just like to say that that is *incredibly* wrong. Having spent 9 months backpacking in Mexico, learning to speak fluent Spanish while there, and having every belonging stolen and being left with 3.5 pesos, I can tell you that Zihuatanejo is a million times more touristy than 90% of the places in Mexico. It just so happens that Ixtapa is way more touristy. I didn't even bother going, I can't stand places so fake.
But people going to Ixtapa aren't worried about seeing "real Mexico" so no worries, have a great time, its a beautiful area. If you're looking for a cheap, but great meal, check out the market in Zihua, you can get a very filling and delicious meal of the most authentic mexican food you'd be able to find there for about $3. I highly recommend trying Menudo.

| Ixtapa, Mexico Posted: 9/20/2008 11:07:11 PM | Danger...considering that the large majority of traveller's see nothing of countries like Mexico outside of the strips of resort hotels in places like Cancun and PV , Zihua is about as 'real' as any of them will ever get. ( and probably about as real as they ever WANT to get ) My brother also did the 'real ' Mexico..and it's sure as hell not for everyone. Agreed that Zihua is touristy in it's own way, it's a lot better taste of culture than an AI in Cancun. | |
