After helping to make fur coats taboo, campaigners at Peta are using hardline tactics on A-list carnivores
Animal rights protesters have launched a series of angry campaigns against A-list carnivores. They are shifting their focus from celebrities who wear fur to others who encourage the "exploitation" of animals by eating them. In its latest campaign, Peta – People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, which became infamous for dousing fur-wearers in red paint – has launched an attack on the singer Jessica Simpson.
Ms Simpson was singled out for ridicule after she was spotted wearing a T-shirt bearing the slogan "Real Girls Eat Meat", believed to be a light-hearted dig at her boyfriend Tony Romo's vegetarian ex-girlfriend, Carrie Underwood.
Alistair Currie, a spokesman for Peta, said: "Jessica Simpson might have a right to wear what she wants, but she doesn't have a right to eat what she wants – eating meat is about suffering and death. Some people feel like they are standing up against a tide of political correctness when they make a statement like this – what she is really doing is standing up for the status quo."
The animal rights group doctored a photo of Ms Simpson to read "Only Stupid Girls Eat Meat", and listed "five reasons only stupid girls eat meat".
In May the group condemned the British actor Jonathan Rhys Meyers for admitting that he had tried dog meat while in China.
The Peta attacks are seen as a sign of the radicalisation of some vegetarian groups. They claim eating meat causes environmental destruction, damages human health and contributes to global hunger, as well as inflicting suffering on billions of animals.
Vegetarians International Voice for Animals (Viva!) claims that there are currently between five and six million vegetarians in the UK but estimates that as many as a third of population have significantly reduced their meat intake.
"Vegetarians are still in a minority – most people eat meat. You're sticking your neck out as a vegetarian, and so most are passionate about it," said Annette Pinner, the chief executive of the Vegetarian Society.
A recent pronouncement from the head of the UN climate change agency that the best thing people can do to halt global warming is to turn vegetarian has taken the debate a step further.
Paul McCartney, a veteran vegetarian campaigner, recently launched "Meat Free Mondays" to encourage meat-eaters to eat vegetarian food once a week, citing the UN's statement as a good reason to forgo meat.
Yet there is evidence that the British public might be rebelling against pressure to cut their meat consumption. Despite the cost of meat hitting a 22-year high, British supermarkets actually report a rise in sales. Waitrose has recorded big year-on-year increases in the sale of most meats, while sales of Asda's "2p sausage" have gone up by 42 per cent.

This will just be publicity for her It won't stop me from eating meat. As for saying that vegetarians are sticking their neck out- are they getting attacked by meat eaters?

| Animal rights group turns its fire on celebrity meat-eaters Posted: 6/28/2008 8:37:37 PM | | Being a vegetarian is actually a very good thing. It takes a lot of discipline (AND MONEY) and you also have to learn to cook (probably!). However, one shouldn't be harassed. It's another scenario in which political organizations have to ruin every good cause for everybody. | |

| Animal rights group turns its fire on celebrity meat-eaters Posted: 6/28/2008 8:47:30 PM | A big portion of animal rights advocates don't like PETA because they make good hearted people look like lunatics. Honestly doucing someone with red paint. In some states thats assault. It does nothing for your cause and it makes you look foolish.
Now if PETA put out an add or protested her events that would look more civil and alot more sencible to more of the mainstream Americans.

Actually, the best thing we can do to halt it is to reduce the world's population. Cutting the reproduction rate would be a good idea. Or stop polluting the environment - reduce driving, air conditioner use etc, etc. The latter being highly unlikely in today's society.
While PETA has some good intentions, they are way too radical and people don't take them seriously. I think they'd do better to focus on attainable goals such as encouraging people to eat less meat instead of not eating it at all. Many of us could do well to eat less meat, and I include myself in that. If they are truly concerned with animal welfare, campaign for better treatment of livestock and more humane slaughter practices. Some places are listening to the less radical animal rightists groups such as Farm Sanctuary and are banning cruel farming practices such as farrowing crates for pigs, confinement crates for veal calves, force feeding ducks and geese to get fois gras etc. It's not realistic to expect everyone to quit eating meat, but it is realistic to try to improve farming methods.

| Animal rights group turns its fire on celebrity meat-eaters Posted: 6/29/2008 1:55:13 AM | It's a rather lovely and ironic image I have in my head right now.
You can have Paris Hilton, who's done little or nothing in her life except be Paris Hilton, stepping out of her platinum and diamond covered car, presumably also covered in platinum and diamonds herself and treated like some visiting head of state - and this only turns evil when she orders that seventy dollar hamburger , and bites into it ?

| Animal rights group turns its fire on celebrity meat-eaters Posted: 6/29/2008 1:55:39 AM | PETA is not and never was about "being kind-hearted", being environmentally friendly, being vegan or anything else. It is about MONEY. Sure a few idiots think it is about more but that won't make it so. If PETA has an office in your town go hold a bbq in front of it for charity..... preferably for your local SPCA which does more in a year for the same animals that PETA claims to represent than PETA has ever done since its' inception. Oh and toss eggs at their windows if you get bored. | |

apparently she doesn't have a right to wear what she wants if she wants to wear fur. if she does around PETA she may just get paint all over her clothes....ms currie lives (i presume) in the us, where jessica does have the right to eat what she wants as long as it's ok'd by the FDA. if it's not ok'd, she might have a little trouble.
there is a lot PETA could be doing rather than the outright radical "terrorism" it engages in. if eating meat is cruel, how do we slaughter less cruelly? how do we care for livestock in a more humane manner? why do they have to go to an extreme that will turn off many more than it will engage in their cause? b/c the publicity stunt will guilt people into sending $$$ to ease their consciences...i'm with loony on this one. it's a money grab. i'd rather give money to the local humane society or spca.

| Animal rights group turns its fire on celebrity meat-eaters Posted: 6/29/2008 6:08:15 AM | | The earth has 2 sources of food. Animals and vegetation. Animal rights groups say don't eat mean. Then there is a group to save the plant life. Soon, people will be protesting everything we eat. As far as not eating meat, should we attempt to stop birds from eating worms, keep larger fish from eating smaller fish. Hey, Eating meat is natural. I can understand if they want people to stop eating an endangered species. Some organizations have to much time on their hands. | |

What is this, Nazi Germany?
I mean seriously, Hitler was a vegetarian. And thought everyone should be one too.
These people are insane.
Someone mentioned animal and plant rights. Yep, there are people who beleive we shouldn't eat either.
I think they want all of us to die.

| Animal rights group turns its fire on celebrity meat-eaters Posted: 6/29/2008 6:33:00 AM | | If we did not eat animals we would not raise them. All those chickens, pigs, cows, and other tasty critters would not be a part of the circle of life if we all went vegetarian. Who are we to deny their place here on earth. I say spark up the barbecue. | |

| Animal rights group turns its fire on celebrity meat-eaters Posted: 6/29/2008 6:39:51 AM | It's hard to deny just how good animals taste. Here are some tips on making sure you get your fair share.
1..When buying chicken always get the packages with multiple "like" chicken parts...like all legs or all breasts. That way you can sample several different chickens in the same meal.
2...When cooking lobster I like to buy a few extra and make the others watch as I throw one of them into the boiling water.
3...Being an avid sportsman that I am, I always carry a hibachi, a fishing rod and a gun, (please check all local and states laws), in your vehicle so not to miss out on any opportunity that might walk, fly, swim, or crawl your way.
You might consider also making sure you have plenty of celebratory toothpicks stashed in the glovebox.

| Animal rights group turns its fire on celebrity meat-eaters Posted: 6/29/2008 7:28:33 AM | PETA like any other group may unfortunately attract some extremist but that goes with any organization. PETA has done more good then harm and has taken a stand to voice for those helpless creatures who suffer great pain for human satisfaction. We live in a country which represents humanity and compassion yet we allow inhumane practices for the consumption of meat. Do your homework!!! I have been researching animal welfare for the past three years. You would be amazed of what goes on and it is not a myth, it is the cold facts. There will allways be those who choose to turn a blind eye only because it is easier. What is taken place is inhumane and cruelty to animals. Your odviously missing the point. | |

| Animal rights group turns its fire on celebrity meat-eaters Posted: 6/29/2008 7:39:11 AM | Maybe we should start an ATALA organization? (Animals Treating Animals Like Animals)
We could include ourselves as well as all the other animals that are cruel and inhumane to each other. Like cats and mice...dogs and cats...Lions and zebra...OMG there is so much work to do. All the pain and suffering out there...it has to be stopped. Think about the poor little vole...living free...taking car of his family...house payments...car payments just adding to his worries everyday. Then "BAM" an owl grabs him and the vole family is no more. Stop the suffering now....please!!!

| Animal rights group turns its fire on celebrity meat-eaters Posted: 6/29/2008 7:47:12 AM | It amazes me when I hear these statements because there is nothing more radical then allowing the inhumane treatment which causes pain in suffering to animals which takes place in a country such as ours. Do yourself a favor and educate yourself on what is going on. Thousands of celebrities who had the resources and the money to investigate animal welfare in this country have been a god sent!!! which has given PETA alot credibility. I wonder how many people would want to see their dog or cat suffer because the reality is.......they all share the same feelings. So easy for those to say.. huh? | |

| Animal rights group turns its fire on celebrity meat-eaters Posted: 6/29/2008 8:03:25 AM | PETA may have credibility with some celebrities- but not with the normal people- how many exotic animals(like mink) have been 'freed' by peta- only to die of starvation or being ripped apart by wild animals because they can't survive on their own?? BTW- I didn't mean be attacked physically- so don't get so hissy!! the snottiness is bad enough. I agree with not wearing fur- its not necessary; but, peta has thrown paint at people wearing fake fur too........yeah they're really smart | |
