It is utterly stunning, and looks exactly how you imagine a "proper" castle should look. It is also close to the historic city of Chichester and Portsmouth is only a short drive. The historic dockyards are a must for naval history....
The choice of places to stay is vast, from sea-front smart hotels to small b&b's or lovely country pubs.
I would recommend at least 3 days here, then jump on a train to Wales, and head up to North Yorkshire, maybe via Chester...Manchester is fantastic for a night out- way better clubs and music scene than London.
Places to avoid at all costs include Nottingham, Leeds oh and Wrexham.

I have to put a good word in for my adopted home town, Nottingham isn't that bad really!
The caves at Broadmarsh are interesting from a historical point of view. The castle though isn't so much. You can indulge in drinking and history at The Trip to Jerusalem and The Bell; two pubs that both claim to be the oldest in the land. The Salutation and The Hand and Heart both have caves as part of the establishment, which is interesting. The Nottingham ghost tour isn't up to the same standard as York's but you can learn where celery was first cultivated!
If you want to do the Robin Hood legend, then, obviously Sherwood isn't so far away.
Don't know what WW2 history we have in the area, it seems Nottingham went a bit downhill after Robin!

Not bad in the way that Ebola is not bad compared to Aids?
Nottingham is dreadful, it lacks charm, culture, scenery, the history is, at best, mediocre. I am not mentioning the drug and gun culture obviously- that is top rate.
The only things Nottingham has going for it, is the train to get out.

| Traveler coming to UK ideas? Posted: 6/30/2008 5:23:12 AM | | With the RAF (or RCAF) connection, you will undoubtedly want to go to Biggin Hill...very close to Denbies vineyard which is fabulous, and does accommodation. It is about 20mins on a train from Gatwick, so could be your first port of call and stop on your way to Portsmouth... | |

| Traveler coming to UK ideas? Posted: 6/30/2008 7:39:55 AM | I don't see any mention of it above, but if you're a military history buff, then you may want to spend some time in the Imperial War Museum. (http://www.iwm.org.uk/)
And if you fancy a beer or two while you're in London, give me a shout!

| Traveler coming to UK ideas? Posted: 6/30/2008 9:30:59 AM | Hiyas Dont come to the UK by this time next year it we be wrecked with people starving on ther streets. Fat boy Brown with destroy it by then for sure.
I would get here as quick as possible. But bring a gun and an anti stab vest. Also dont go out at night as u will get mugged. Learn some Polish as that's what most shop assistants speak now. Bring ya own petrol as ours is the same value as gold. Wear a hoody every day so will mix in with the crowds. Get a big chip on your shoulder and u will feel "British"

Well worth a visit if that's the sort of thing that blows your frock up.
