Do you remember yourself before 1 year old?

I remember myself at about 6 months, and it's very different from what everybody thinks... just wanted to see if others had similar experiences.

(Thousands of very bright colors, brighter than anything I can see now.. raw, "unprocessed" photographic memory... no, VIDEO memory... no undersgtanding of cartoon images, they were a bunch of abstract colored spots... incredibly intense emotions, more intense than an adult's... attention to the tiniest details, like a twisted thread sticking off somebody's sleeve button... superb spatial orientation... no recollection of language... and very deep understanding of human psychology and non-verbal cues, a lot deeper than now, to the point of not really needing a language)

Not sure how old I was, but I can definitely remember my crib, highchair, and crawling as my primary means of travel. I mentioned that to my Mom a few years back, and she confirmed my recollections.

Sadly, any time she meets a potential girlfriend, she's obligated to pull out the pics of me wearing only a coonskin cap. Some memories are better off buried in the bottom drawer.

Shucks ... I remember popping out of the womb ... bright lights, cold surroundings. I was not a happy newborn. The doctor slapped my butt to induce breathing ... big mistake ... I slugged him one in the groin. That'll learn him.

^^ sounds like you are kidding, but I've heard a serious account from a friend I trust, about remembering his own birth... though he is not entirely sure.. he speaks of being squeezed and pushed into cold.

I can remember falling and smashing my head on the corner of a television, that would be my earliest memory. Had to have been when I was walking, but I can't remember learning how to walk. I can remember my dad giving me a spanking, being sick a lot and getting in fights in school, but I can't remember ages of those events. Seems most of what I remember of those early years are bad things, kids are mean, so I spent a lot of time getting in fights...
A few of them I wouldn't mind meeting again so I can finish the job...

I do recall lying in my crib. It seemed the yellow curtains moved when I kicked, so I tried kicking harder and harder.
Years later my mother confirmed that I was "kicker," but she said it was the wind that caused the curtains to move.
Confounded by life from the beginning, I swear...

In regards to a previous poster who claims to remember being born.

I also can remember my birth albeit not very vividly but I can account for memory of my birth.

And I am not alone in this either.

Approx. 1 in every 2,500 humans can remember their birth.

There are some fascinating claims in The Mind of Your Newborn Baby (David Chamberlain) about interviews with mothers and very young children in which they both give details of the hours before/after birth that the mother claims she has never shared with the child (and the child's version is curiously un-adultlike).

I don't recall ever having birth memories. I'm pleased when I can remember some of my passwords.

Actually, very interesting subject. There is evidence the fetus at about 6 months has many sentient qualities, and awareness. I for one recall the thrill i got when my daughter, still in her moms garden/womb...kicking and moving energetically when i would "talk" to her. I'd put my larynx against my wifes abdomen and sing, hum, talk...and she would respond physically! I can't speak to wheather she has conscious awareness...BUT we to this day have an awesome connection (now 22)

BACK to OT,,,i cannot say if the memories were prior to first birthday...but there are vivid memories, particularly a smell. Lilacs..big bush outside my crib rooms window. Sounds, feelings.

Birth memories...yes, they can be quite real, but most of us either disbelieve ...or do not hear the subconscious at all. With a 100 billlion neurons....well, i'd expect we'd have information unprocessed but still stored somewhere.

Yep.....visuals like you described, OP.

Vividly remember my 1st B-day, cake/candle, playing in gravel in our side garden. BTW...there are no photographs from that day that I have ever seen, so substitution is not a possibility. & I told my parents the memories, not the other way around.

No freaking way. It is a trick of the mind to imagine memories but they are illusory. The part of your mind that interprets memory is not capable of producing memories as they were when you first had them at that young age. At best you can have a memory of being baffled by what had become impossible to remember, which never was the type of memory you now have. Bright images, OK, but "incredibly intense emotions, more intense than an adult's... attention to the tiniest details, like a twisted thread sticking off somebody's sleeve button... superb spatial orientation... no recollection of language... and very deep understanding of human psychology and non-verbal cues, a lot deeper than now, to the point of not really needing a language" Nope, not possible. Stop the bus and let me off here.

HAHAHA..short bus has no door handles hahaha!!!
"Mama said life is like a bus ride.
Ya never know where its gonna go."

I will say, with a 100 million hungry empty neurons at birth...
the plausibility is not lost in seeming impossibility.

And no, these memories do not require hypnosis...
and are not "planted memory" phenomena...

The human organism....is far more wonderfully complex than known.

I don't remember that early except from my mom's photo albums. However, I think I was a toddler under 2 though and I learned to say the numbers up to ten. I remember actually saying a number and my grandma was screaming afterwards. I don't recall anything else except my mon was telling me that I was very popular at that age in my grandparents' town because each time they were playing the lottery, everyone looked for me. I seemed to have the knack of uttering numbers that made them win~~~

I don't know about birth memories, except to say those near-death experiences with the long tunnel with the light at the end is thought by many to be actually a birth memory, instead of a hallway to heaven.

I used to only remember a few things from my childhood I think my youngest I was about 2 years old.
I now have a 3 year old daugter and after watching her explore and learn from birth it has some how triggered other memories of when I was even younger than 2, like 6 months and less. I never thought that I would ever remember any thing that young.
Any one else have kids that have triggered lost forever momories?

I remember the carpet. The legs of the furniture. I was pretty familiar with the wall sockets, too.

OK... any chick reading this will NEVER date me. lol.

I remember being six months old, crawling, a puppy "Rex", and not only understanding adult talk, but animals too. But animals don't communicate verbally. It's not ESP, but for lack of a better word..... The closest thing I would use to describe it is an incredible level of interpersonal attunement to none verbal cues. Actually very effective with no room for misinterpretations.

I grew up on a farm and had a crazy dog (Sheppard) that would bite everyone, but told me he wouldn't bite me. He was the epitome of the alpha male. He was more of a big brother to me. lol. I remember crawling up to and sitting next to him while he was chained up next to his dog house, and everyone screaming at me to "come here" while other's were screaming "the dog's gonna get him!!" I distinctly remember the dog telling me "Stay here. You're safe". I found out years later that my dad was in one of his violent drunken periods at the time and the dog had tore on my uncle and him during one of their tirades, so the old man chained him up.

By the time I was 2, we had another dog that kept me out of trouble and would boss me around with his constant "No you can't do that either" (Beaver... a collie), and a pet pig telling me to quit throwing rocks at him and would charge me for it (knock me down).

I remember feeding a cow a cob of corn and the cow eating my mitten. Stupid cow didn't even know it had it in it's mouth. No sentience in the least. Horses either. They're as dumb as door knobs. They exist, but don't have the capacity to know it. Like a tree.

From what I can remember... sentient animals are:
Dogs (very, but like people, some are short a few marbles and some have none.)
Goats (stupid, but know they exist)
Pigs (not very smart, but not stupid either.)

Animals with the sentience of dried hay:
Just about every other farm animal you can think of. Go ahead... eat 'em. They don't care. But the dumbest has got to be cows. Even chickens are smarter.

I do because I started keeping a diary the day I was born. I was recently looking through it. "Day 1. Still tired from the move..."

I only remember pre-school, making a painting at age 4 and visiting my mother at the hospital at age 5. That is all I remember of my first 5 years.

I have two memories before the age of 1. I'm told most people don't remember anything before the age of 5 incidentally.

1. In a circular saucer shaped stroller thingy on wheels that my pudgy little baby legs could push around. Dangerous as hell now that I think of it - a set of stairs or roadside curb away from badly injuring myself. I'm guessing I was about 9months.

2. In my crib on a barge, I remember my older siblings chasing each other on the deck and running up toward the upper deck. Only a couple months old or so.
