Apparently some of the graffiti in Melbourne is being considered for heritage protection.

I’m wondering what others think about this?

I like all forms of street art, other than perhaps tagging, I think there is a rebellious brashness about a lot of graffiti that makes it exciting. I particularly like street art that makes a bold political or social statement.

I think the organic nature, of graffiti is an aspect of it that makes it appealing and sets it apart from many other forms of art, so putting it under heritage protection would make it benign and take a way the much of it's purpose.

From what I’ve read about this issue, one of the motives behind the push for heritage listing is ‘property values’ ironically the graffiti will actually raise the property values as some of the artists are now highly regarded.

I reckon the best thing that could happen if it is heritage listed is that a bunch of street artists sneak in one night and completely remove all the artworks.

What do others think?

I don't like tagging very much either as it is just about ego, but i think that some graffiti of a political nature is great. I use the werribee train quite a lot, and there is one that i see everyday about john howard's treatment of asylum seekers on the roof of a disused factory which is now used by squatters and other graffiti on many topics.
I see graffiti as an indication of where we are at as a society and the important issues of the day. It also causes us to think about what is important to us and in what direction we should be heading or not headed. I don't see it as something that should be heritage listed as over time things change and the graffiti may be redundant.
Having said that i guess some graffiti maybe very artistic and people may over time, associate it with a particular area but i do not think that it should be heritage listed and encourage ego boosting graffiti

Absolutely brilliant idea, it would go with the whole ideology of graffiti artists

There is some phenonmenal artists who use this medium. Some cities are lined with thier buildings as canvases some are infact the most astounding and incredibly beautiful peices of modern art.

Love it. If its in its rightful place
like hip hop etc is urban modern poetry . graffiti has its place - look at some of the ancient caveman tagging!! lol Its in our bones

ive often wondered why art sponsers/philanthropists/colleges - whatever - dont pick up these incredibly talented artists!! the stuff that our fearless leaders pay a fortune for.......lol but the art thats there...? its a constantly evolving thing so protecting it wouldnt really make sense-take a photo!!!

Up my way all the bus stop bunkers are all decked out in street art & some of them look totally awesome. So much expressive talent out there & I'm limited to walls & doors, go figure.
I've got plans in council atm for a granny flat & the parapit wall sides on to a walkway & thanks to this thread I'll be looking into how I go about having it decorated with street art, it would certainly be so much better than the inevitable tagging.
Cheers & thanks

Good point...though it does beg the question...Where is it's rightful place?...Often to gain maximum impact a' wrongful' place is the rightful place...if you get what I mean.

My views on graffiti are pretty simple....some call it vandalism.

Those ugly building they've litter this pretty planet with are 'vandalism' in my funny idealist lil paradigm.... paint the fkrs I say..... too easy.

Back in my raving days (12 years or so ago) I went to a party on Botany rd. Alexandria in a place dubbed The Graffiti Hall of Fame, a factory unit that had been demolished that was flanked by two storey brick walls on three sides. Before the demo job the cleverest of artists had been let loose with stencils and spray cans. Once the first floor had been removed there remained a two storey canyon of artwork that was truly magnificent. Being as it was surrounded by factories the doof went from dusk 'til dawn without raising an eyebrow; a great set-up!

I like graffiti in the right places (eg drab sides of buildings and the likes) but not tagging that is just illegible scribble that finds its way on everything including peoples front fences. I dont like riding on trains that I cant see out the windows of for the paint either.......

The skate park on Newcastle beach has some great works and it fits in really well with the park itself. If there were more places made available for these artists and there wasnt such a dim view taken of it all the time the tagging might decrease a bit too.

All graffiti artists (if you can call them that) should have their hands cut off and be fed their testicles or ovaries so they cannot breed and contaminate the rest of the world!!

I have a real problem with them using other peoples property as a canvas, if it's their own house or factory then I say go for it!! Otherwise see comment above!!

Somebody owns all of those "drab" buildings and has to clean all that sh1t up. Typical that the people doing the damage don't get that. The vast majority have no message other than "Look at me - aren't I sh1t hot". If you like it, good for you but personally I don't.

My personal favourite piece of public expressive art was when McDonaldtown railway station was painted pink. For those that don't know, McDonaldtown station is a railway station in Sydney's inner west used for railway employees going to the railway yards there. I was on a Blue Mtns train one morning on my way to work and every person on the train was gawking at what is usually the ugliest railway station in the whole of the Sydney network. The entire station had been painted pink. Platform, buildings, seats and signs. The artists had even placed a few cafe style tables and chairs on the platform, wine bottles and all, and painted the lot pink.

If those people had to clean up their work, and they did, then all the graffiti artists in the world should have to suffer the same fate...destruction of their vandalism.

A bit like the 'is it really art' thread.

Personal perception I guess. I dont like tags but can appreciate work and beauty of some graffiti. Give it a place to happen and then immortalize it in a photo in some gallery!
