| Near 40 and starting exercise Posted: 7/2/2008 7:48:35 AM | Im quite a bit over weight and now I want to do something about it. I was wondering if anyone has a decent website or information on how to start and what keeps them going. I manage to start, but I lose motivation. Any information would be greatfully appreciated.
thanks

Variety is a good thing. A good way to estimate aerobic intensity, is the talk test. If you can talk forever without taking an extra breath, you probably aren't working hard enough. If you can't talk at all, you are working too hard. If you can talk in short sentences, and then need an extra breath, you are probably around 50% to 66% of the way across the training zone for heart rate.
For people near average in fitness, it is almost like the clock starts ticking after you have been doing continuous aerobic exercise for about 20 minutes. It is almost like 22 minutes is twice as good as 21 minutes. For people fresh out of cardiac surgery, there is no way they can get in 20 minutes of continuous exercise, so anything at all is good. But, trying to get to 20 minutes is a reasonable goal. For most people, diminishing returns seems to be around 45 minutes of continuous aerobic exercise.
Adding muscle is a good thing. Hire a personal trainer or sign up for a session at someplace like the YMCA to have someone show you the proper way to do weightlifting. Watching other people working out in a gym is not usually a good way to learn how to do something, we all tend to cheat in one way or another. Some of us cheat more than others, of course.
Try to find things you enjoy doing.
Some people need to work out in groups, some people need a partner, some people workout best alone. Find out what works for you.
Good luck! | |

Losing weight and maintaining it is a lifestyle change so you must get with the program and change your eating habits for good and learn about your body and good nutrition. To get you off on the right foot I would hire a personal trainer take baby steps in the beginning and build up....if you go too strong in the beginning you may crash and burn and get frustrated from not seeing result fast enough.
Good luck | |

That's really the bottom line.

Go for a walk once or twice a day. The more free time you have to go, take advantage of it and take the longer walk.
Cut one of your unhealthy foods you eat out of your diet once a week to gradually reduce those foods. I recommend pop and chips, it's amazing the difference you feel when you don't eat that trash.

| Near 40 and starting exercise Posted: 7/2/2008 12:44:43 PM | | Walking is wonderful. You can do it any time, even for ten minutes at a time. It isn't expensive and requires no special equipment other than a good pair of shoes. Go fo it - later whe you're in better shape from that, you can go to another activity as well. | |

| Near 40 and starting exercise Posted: 7/2/2008 4:01:02 PM | | Write down your goals, with time lines when you want to lose the weight. Stick it up on a wall and look at it everday. Do different exercises from lift weights, swimming, biking, walking etc. Do different exercises daily this will stop boredom. Eat 5 to 6 times a day, smaller meals this will increase your metabolism. Take coconut oil it will also improve your metaoblism. Avoid processed foods, bad fats and eat plenty of fruits and vegetables. Healthy fats are coconut oil, olive oil and flax seed oil in moderation. | |

| Near 40 and starting exercise Posted: 7/2/2008 5:48:37 PM | I am 41 and I have lost weight in the last year. I get complimented all the time.
I did it by hiking several miles per day and watching what I eat.
I eat a lot of lean meats (chicken mostly) and veggies and nuts and some fruit.
