London... good or a bad thing?
Posted: 7/4/2008 4:41:02 AM
I read 925dancer's post mentioning that London is sucking the life out of her and it made me wonder: London, a good or a bad thing?

You've got those who say London is amazing! So much to do and so little time to do it in. Others will say it's lonely and depressing.

Love it or hate it, what's your opinion?

Went down there to a Property Auction yesterday. As per usual I found the journey in as probably one of the most depressing things in the world. Was only in the capital for about 4 or so hours but felt so tired after I got in, Absolute shite hole, but needs must I suppose!

I dont like it as i find the people very unfriendly, i mean if you smile at someone on the underground or say hi they think your a leper.

Also the pace of life is too hectic, everyone seems to be rushing around all the time and not really getting anywhere

Dont get me wrong London has its plus points, like for things to do, gigs, exhibitions, shopping, bars etc but i wouldnt change the pace of life nor the cost of living that i have here for it

London works as kind of a magnet that attracts interesting folk and those with a creative flair... Yet also seems to oddly repel the misery guts types, it's a great natural filter to ensure the people at the next table to you in the bar are great fun.

I always like it as well when people use the tube as a yard-stick to measure how unfriendly the people are. People don't use the tube to socialise, they use it to travel. If you want to meet friendly people then visit a social environment.

Love London.
Go into London often with my daughter and we love going exploring and seeing the sights.
You do get misserable people there but to be fair, you get that anywhere.

I enjoy visiting London, but not as much as I used to. I don't like the underground so I either walk or take a taxi if I can. The people seem quite friendly but always very busy and rushing everywhere - sometimes get caught up in a tide of people which panics me as I don't like crowds. My face and lungs always seem to get dirty with the pollution.

I am a country girl so therefore a visit to the city is a novelty. Almost as much as I suspect a city person visiting the country. A long time ago I had a date with a city guy who once he mastered the art of wearing wellingtons was too frightened to walk through a field of cows! (I persuaded him and led the way carrying a big stick just in case - Mmmmmmoooooooooooo)

If you're going to visit the tourist hot spots like Oxford Street, Covent Garden or Camden Market then what else should you expect?

You wouldn't have the same experience on Brick Lane or perhaps Portobello Road as the major shopping areas though.

Crowds are a relative thing - I am used to my personal space. Hyde Park can seem crowded to me.

So what you dislike about London isn't specific to it as you would probably be equally irked by the same things anywhere else that has a population?

Centre of the universe.

Absolutely hate the place, to big, too insular, too lonely, too fast, too crowded ,too polluted, too expensive, and too many chirpy bloody cockneys on the next table .....

Touché

But reinforces my point completely.

And I'd say cockneys only form a small part of the rich tapestry - it's cosmopolitan.

Love London as a place to visit but I can't honestly say I'd want to live/work there.
From what I've seen of the non-tourist places, it's just the same as any big city; it has pretty bits and shitty bits, high-life and low-lives.
I prefer living away from the hustle and only going into any city when I need to or want to.

I adore London. I lived all around London for 17years & only moved out 2 years ago. I miss it desperately & will move back. London for me is the most diverse, magical place no matter whether winter or summer.
I go back at weekends as often as I can (work permitting) just to be a part of all that hustle, bustle, history, beautiful buildings, parks, markets, etc, even the public transport system!
There's always something for me to learn there & enjoy & be a part of.

I'm born and raised in London and didnt move away until about 3 yrs ago.

In the days when I needed that buzz 24/7 it was a great place to be but also the worst !!

I now live in a part of the country where the bus drivers can speak english and my neighbours arent running crack houses with prostitutes in and out and where if theres a loud bang in the middle of the night its probably a tyre blown as opposed to someone being shot .

I'm proud of this nations heritage and London was once a living reminder of events and personalities that once shaped it .
It has now been corroded and corrupted beyond recognition and stripped of any real character it once had !!

As I inspired the thread it's only right I reply!

I moved here not far off two years ago and in that time I haven't ever really settled. I have very few friends, which isn't a major problem but it is very difficult to meet people on a social level. It's an odd kind of a place with so many people just passing through. It is incredibly expensive.

Yes it is a melting pot of cultures and people, that's one aspect I love, the markets, Portobello Road, Camden. The theatre, museums etc, all fantastic. As a place to relocate and start over on your own as I did? Pretty bloody difficult and hard work. I will leave here with only a handful of friends who will keep in touch. Sad but true.

I was born and raised in London - left when I was 18 and wouldn't move back to live there for anything.

However, I do love visiting the City of London as a tourist - it looks fantastic on a sunny day and especially at night along the embankment. A day is plenty though - then I can't wait to get home

Born and bred in south east london and lived there until 12 years ago when I moved to deepest, darkest essex... and whilst I wouldn't move back there to live permanently, I still love it to bits...

Unlike some, I think the transport system is amazing - too crowded yeah but what major city isn't? As for unfriendly tube travellers - easy... just forget you're sitting on one of those "pop-up" seats, get up to do something and then fall flat on your a*se as you go to sit back down again and you'll make plenty of friends!!

Yup the west end is full of "foreigners" but hey! they pay the big bucks in tourism that help keep all our gorgeous buildings, theatres and galleries alive..

London's vital, kicking and amazing - like anything in life you only get out what you put in..

Yeah London - me loves ya!

To be honest i don't like London at all. I used to date someone from there a few years back. On the whole found that many people i met just didn't have the time as they were always busy, and didn't come across as that friendly either.

Although did love the sights of London. Went on the London Eye twice, went to Harrods, Covent Gdns and also London Zoo.

Wouldn't ever live there though prefer my town

biggest city in the country, so gets a bit busy at times

work there once a month on average, go in after the rush hour so get to have a seat

often walk between sites, but not via the tourist areas, is ok to me
