Having to get things done during work hours
Posted: 7/4/2008 8:10:25 AM
I found being newly single, I've had to have repairmen, gas meter reader, packages deliveried, furniture deliveries, doctor appointments, all during my regular work hours.

How does a single person ever manage to do these things?

How does everyone feel about taking time off from work to wait for a repairman.
Virginmedia is the absolute worse with "we will show up between 800 and 1300"

I used to have to either use my holiday allowance or go unpaid for all time off needed for appointments including my childs hospital appointments which there are alot of.

Being hourly paid i could not afford to go unpaid so some years i ended up with hardly any holiday allowance left to use for the purpose of a holiday!.

Some Companies like Virgin charge a standard£10 fee if you are not at home when they call .

I have a great neighbour, and we take it in turns, if someone needs to be home for deliveries, repairman, virginmedia, BT etc..as we both work, and are single.

I'm fairly lucky as i have job, where i can work from home, so i manage to fit my hospital appointments around this. And because of fatigue illness, i only work most mornings, as i'm too shattered in the afternoon, and need to take nap.

I work just 10 mins drive from home and have found that most companies, repair men etc. are quite happy to call 30 mins before they get here so that I can pop out from work to meet them at the house.

Deliveries are arranged for weekends, sometimes have to pay extra but it's worth it. Or if they are smaller items they just get taken to the local Royal Mail depot which is literally 2 mins drive away.

Other than that, my company are exceptionally good, and anyone who needs time off for emergancy repairs, washing machine floods etc, just ring and say they will be in as soon as possible - no one has a problem with it at all.

I've been needing to get to the Dr for about 3 months now but as my surgery only opens for a few hours in the morning and a few in the evening it is very difficult to get there. I usually just see the nurse and she is only there twice a week so even more impossible. Not to mention they are always running late, so popping out for half an hour turns into a whole hour.

Today I had to go and pick up glasses, eneded up taking me 2 hours! I feel so guilty.

Took a holiday day for my sofa to be delivered.

It is a nightmare to get anything done.

Small things I just have delivered to work, we all do it. Often parcels all over the place including the bosses!

925dancer,
The delivery at work sounds like a good idea. I may try that sometimes!

I work 12 hour shifts, nights aswell as days, so i try not to order anything bulky through the post,as for repairmen i do my own if possible, the thought of a singleman as being the best is rubbish, on my days off i have to wash, iron, dust, hoover, food shop, a man's work is never done, on top of that i have a large garden to upkeep, still i managed to get a tan doing the weeding today lol

i suppose it is the same for a Working Mum as well who not only has the time to do this but to run round after the kids as well ..Hats off ... I just thought that this is what weekends are for lol All my Bulky mail ( ok ebay buys lol ) either my Lovely Neighbours take it in /Posty takes it back to sorting office ( open until 6.30pm) and as for tradesmen i rent so Landlord deals with it and has access . And its a case of doing what you have too and with so many shops now either open 24hrs or till late at night and housework i do a room an evening . Washing is set on a timer to come on at nine( neighbours would not be happy with washing machine starting at 6.45 am ) and the when i get home i hang it out and if not dry it goes on airers ...

How does a single person ever manage to do these things?

Easy:
1) There's a concierge in my building who can deal with about 95% of this stuff
2) When he can't, I can walk home from the office in less than 10 minutes
3) When even that won't do, I can work at home when I really need to

Don't understand the problem, really - especially as I regularly do 50+ hour work weeks (which does have the upside that if I need to take an hour here or there, nobody has the nads to complain about it)

^^^ Msg 11 - you are very fortunate. Not a lot of us have those advantages you do. Funnily enough I am up early waiting for the Council's plumber to fix my leaking tap. Luckily they will come out Saturday mornings so I don't have to use my holiday entitlement. Not many council tradespeople work Saturdays.

I arrange things around my work as there's nothing more annoying than staying in all day when the gas or elec board says they're coming out and then they dont turn up! arrgh!

i have it very easy i think....

I work hard (6 days a week) and do shift work, but i have a teenage daughter (18) and her future husband to do it, as they both love housework! (i hate it)

I hate it, so i pay them to do the housework.. they have £20 each and it buys them there ciggys etc, for the week and i come home to a nice tidy home

As far as staying in for people to visit ie Gas Man im usually at work when my daughter is at home, and im at home when shes at work.. (she also does split shifts) so there seems to be someone here most of the time!!

Wasted a day once waiting for someone who did not turn up - caled the company and they offered me £20 for my inconvuinience.

Told them that I get more than that per hour and wasted whole day

I had VirginMedia not show up TWICE. They never called or anything. Wasted two whole vacation days.
First time they "overbooked" and rescheduled 2 weeks later. Then they stood me up again. Once again, overbooked and rescheduled THREE weeks later. I said, don't I get priority since you bumped me twice?
No.
Atleast they didn't charge me for the 2 months worth of service I didn't get.
Cancelled my subscription the next day.

Thought you meant some sort of intense need for self relief while at work was cropping up. I empathized with that.

People and companies are less accountable for business practises than ever.
P.s I'd never get virgin broadband again if they're gonna try and limit our useage of the internet. Sounds like another move towards a police state.
