I see so many uses and benifits for it.... i don't see myself cooking with it, i dont even use olive oil.... what do u think about sucking down a tablespoon a day? should u keep it in the fridge...seems easier to swallow if it were cold??? anyone use it on thier hair b4?

| coconut oil Posted: 7/5/2008 1:39:57 PM | I tried this, actually. I didn't find that it helped with anything really (thyroid, migraines, headaches, anxiety, depression poor sleep etc). I took around a tablespoon per day for a couple of months or more -- the easiest way is to spread it thickly on crackers or toast and put a layer of jam/jelly on top -- a bit like you might have used butter before you knew it was bad for you. You don't need to keep it in the fridge: it will spread more easily if you don't. It is supposed to contain good fats. What is interesting is that it's not supposed to make you gain weight -- I don't agree with that -- but that may be because I am a little underweight and it is alleged by some to make the underweight gain and the overweight lose (sounds pretty hard to believe!).
Give it a go by all means -- at least a couple of months to be fair -- PROVIDED YOU HAVE LOW/HEALTHY BLOOD PRESSURE (it can raise blood pressure). We are all different and it might help you as it seems to have helped many people. It is certainly a good cheap skin moisturiser and I'm happy using it in baking cakes and biscuits and thinking perhaps it's healthier than other fats.

| coconut oil Posted: 7/5/2008 1:47:10 PM | Years ago I bought a jar of coconut oil in a health food store and it said on the label it was for cosmetic use only. It was taken off the shelves in stores for cooking back then
I did use it on my hair and legs - it lasts a long time. I liquified it in the microwave
|
| coconut oil Posted: 7/5/2008 1:57:10 PM | | I use olive oil in place of lotion... works wonders!! I nuke it in the mic for a couple seconds..... and it helps relax legs b4 bed. | |

| coconut oil Posted: 7/5/2008 5:07:15 PM | Coconut oil is the only safe oil truly safe for cooking. It is because it doesn't turn into dangerous fats when heated. Even olive oil somewhat gets toxic when heated. So I advise you to use coconut oil when cooking. You can safely use up to 3 teaspoon daily but should start off slowly gradually move up to 3. Coconut oil is also great for air conditoner, for acne (works better than the smelly cream stuff from the drug store, great conditoner and it is used in toothsoap. If you want nice healthy teeth simply brush with it after brushing with toothpaste (make sure you rinse your mouth first) If you're going to buy make sure to buy non processed coconut oil, no bleaching, extreme heating etc. Canola oil is one oil to avoid. Many people think this oil is healthy but in fact it is one of the most toxic oils.

| coconut oil Posted: 7/5/2008 5:12:23 PM | i dont cook with olive oil.... i use it as lotion. I use PAM spray.. (if anything).... w. my luck that is a toxin too Im not sure that i could stand brushing my teeth with it,,,,,, looks nastyLOL water seems to keep acne clear of my face...been blessed w. no problems there deff will try it as a conditioner | |
|
| coconut oil Posted: 7/5/2008 5:58:01 PM | Coconut will liquidify once opened unless you refrigerate it. Here is a youtube video on tooth soap, main ingredient is coconut oil. Yes PAM is toxic, people sniff that stuff to get high. Skin brushing and cold shower rinse is great for acne. If you don't like the taste get dr bem kim's coconut oil it tastes so much better lol

| coconut oil Posted: 7/5/2008 6:03:18 PM | The best coconut oil is cold-pressed (if you can find it). Next in line is expeller-pressed, which is what I buy. Anything below that is garbage.
Raw, unrefined coconut oil is one of those miracle foods that increases one's metabolism, which helps burn fat (I used to be 38 inches around the waist, now I'm a solid 30). I've put a tablespoon in a protein drink every morning for ages!
Some people use it in place of butter (I don't). Honestly, the coconut taste really isn't as strong as that. It's a medium-heat oil, so in cooking I use it for simple things like frying eggs or baking muffins.
|
| coconut oil Posted: 7/5/2008 6:43:36 PM | You don't have t refrigerate coconut oil. Its a fully saturated fat that won't go rancid (oxidized) at room temp. Has a shelf life of many nonths, without chemical preservatives.
Are people still putting food in microwave ovens?
Another healthy oil, esp for cooking, is Red Palm Oil.
Since neither of these oils are indigenous to USA, the US food oil industry worked hard, and succeeded, to keep them off the US market, favoring corn oil, soy oil, peanut oil, none of which is as healthy as coconut and palm oil.
|
| coconut oil Posted: 7/5/2008 6:59:22 PM | whats wrong with nuking lotion in the mic... im not eating it. Seems like everytime your doing your body right... your really doing it wrong.. YIKES..LOL!!!
Never heard of red palm oil... i'll read up on that. I honestly don't use oil for cooking at all... I was raised on LARD. and VEG oil. In the south they fry EVERYTHING...bread, fish, even the veggies. You know the coffee can of bacon fat grease sitting on the stove.... that was my mom and my grandmom. So I just did away w. all oil to break an addictive family habit.... ive come ALONNNG ways.
|
| coconut oil Posted: 7/5/2008 9:18:23 PM | Highly unlike you will like red palm oil because of the taste if you think coconut oil is bad in taste red palm oil is worse. One of the reasons I never mention it. Worst fat you can use is margin. Margin was fed to turkey, it would kill a turkey pretty fast.

anyone use it on thier hair b4?
Yes. In days before conditioner it was common to use olive oil. Back home we mix coconut oil with tiare to make it fragrant. It's called monoi. I still use it and people say my hair smells beautiful. I remember my all my aunties had beautiful, soft, shiny, sweet-smelling hair.

| coconut oil Posted: 7/6/2008 4:08:42 AM | | I see conflicting statments about coconut oil should or shouldnt it be put in the frig. once it is opened. I have to go with use the frig. I bought it from a health food store as well and it gave directions to put it there so I did. You do more harm by leaving something out in warm element than you do by keeping it cold. Most americans really dont know much about food saftey at home. I go by is it in a can? then it is harmful is it in plastic and has a long shelf life its gotta be bad for me. As far as oil frying foods in any oil is bad for humans. oil should be used a little at a time cold. Try flax seed oil for salads instead of olive oil. the taste sucks but I see food as medicine fish oils.are just as wise to consume. Save the coconut oil for your body and hair. Olive oil should not be used for frying. If I had my way I would out law frying foods. I go to a fast food place about once every 4 months or less. I cant wait to eat the frys I bought, until I get a wiff of the reused sitting around all day oil they used to fry them in. Then comes my stomach ache. It takes me about 4 months to forget my stomach ache and I go back for more. | |

| coconut oil Posted: 7/6/2008 9:55:23 AM | There's no need to refrigerate open coconut oil, just as there is no need to refrigerate olive oil.
The slime-job on "tropical oils" is a long-term scare-mongering campaign by north American soy/corn/hydrogenated industrial oil producers that has only their profits as the objective, not the nutrition of the targeted consumers.
http://www.nast.dost.gov.ph/st_papers/htdocs/papers_chemathphy/juliano_bienvenido_virgin_coconut_oil.html
etc, etc. Plenty of scientifc research showing the medium-chain fatty acids of coconut oil are used by the body very differently that industrial oil. Anybody got any scientifc research showing coconut oil and palm oil is Bad For Ya?
So now industrial food oil producers, in tandem with their compromised enforcement goons at USDA/FDA, have people so scared of coconut oil and palm oil, aka Mission Accomplished, that people treat them as highly toxic substances to be consumed, if at all, with, great care. But these same scared people have no fear consuming industrialized, polluted fats in meat, butter, process cheeze, corn oil, soy oil, etc.

Coconut oil that is not bleached, dedorized, cold pressed, and has little water will not need to be refridgerated. I always buy mine that comes in a glass jar. Coconut can be safely used for frying compared to other oils. Any kind of cooking it's good for you really, everything in moderation. If you broil, grill, fry and bbq it is not good for you, (especially in high tempatures) so moderation is the key. Boiling and steam is relatively safe.
"Due to its exceptional stability, this coconut oil has a long shelf life of two or more years (the longest of any oil), and does not have to be refrigerated. Coconut oil should be stored out of direct sunlight, however."

Dr Ben Kim's coconut oil is the best if you want to get the best. Since it doesn't use the fermentation process to extract the remaining water content. If you bought coconut stating it need to be refridgerated there is something wrong you need to find another brand. http://drbenkim.com/coconut-oil.htm

$100 gallon? yeah, right.
Here's certified organic virgin coco oil, $55 per gallon:

TT often has 2-for-1 and 3-for-2 sales, announced in their newsletter.
2 T morning and evening = 4T/day
1 gal = 256 T = 64 days = 2 months
|
| coconut oil Posted: 7/7/2008 8:59:15 AM | lol that's fermented coconut oil. They have to heat it to ferment it. "To make our premium virgin coconut oil, fresh coconut meat is grated and expeller pressed to produce fresh coconut milk, which is then centrifuged using a proprietary process to separate coconut oil from the other components of coconut milk. The resulting oil is extremely light in texture, and because there is never any application of heat, our premium virgin coconut oil retains the full flavor and aroma of fresh coconut. "
"The method used to create our premium coconut oil is considered to be one of three production methods that produce "cold pressed" coconut oil. The other two production methods are: Direct Expeller - This type of oil is made by grinding and then pressing dried coconut meat. Because there is some moisture in the dried coconut meat, the liquid that comes out from pressing is about 90% coconut oil and 10% water - this mixture is allowed to sit so that the coconut oil will separate from the water. Typically, some heat is applied to remove remaining water, and the result is an oil that has a light to medium texture. Traditional Hand-Pressed (Homemade) - This type of oil is produced by grinding and pressing fresh coconut meat to produce coconut milk. The milk is allowed to ferment for about 2 days, causing the oil to separate from the water and solids. The oil is then typically boiled to remove remaining moisture, resulting in coconut oil that is medium to thick in texture. "
At least compare apples to apples not apples to oranges. You won't find a better tasting coconut oil it will actually taste like coconuts. I can get tropicaltradions type coconut oil which is fermented from my local health food store. Frankly it taste like crap!
|
| coconut oil Posted: 7/7/2008 10:22:49 AM | Tropical Traditions has a few different versions of coconut oil. I've tried 2. One has the odor of coconuts, the other didn't. It was just "oily". Probably OK for cooking oil, but I don't deep fry or otherwise use cooking oil.
The coconut-perfumed oil couldn't replace olive oil in vinaigrette because it had slight soapy after-taste. So I take it as "medicine" by the T.
$4/gal for gas is outrageous, but $100/gal for coconut oil is OK?

| coconut oil Posted: 7/7/2008 6:30:42 PM | | You just don't get it when taste is a factor I recommended the more expensive oil. If you don't mind the taste you can get something else. It is like comparing a cheap bottle of wine to an expensive bottle of wine. Btw I have been to that site way before this discussion, way before even coming here. It sounds like the OP doesn't care for the taste of coconut oil, that is why I recommended the product. | |
