What's going on in Japan? Japanese men are poisoning themselves with sulfuric acid (such flare!), and at the date of my article 60 people have killed themselves in the last month! The gory details: http://www.cnn.com/2008/WORLD/asiapcf/05/12/detergent.suicide/index.html
This is hardly news, apparently. Japanese businessmen have been murdering themselves since at least after WWII. Here are just a few articles:
Nine dead in Japan, apparent group suicide. (2005-02-05); The article says Japanese suicides in 2003 exceeded 34,000 (!!!?!?!!) http://www.chinadaily.com.cn/english/doc/2005-02/05/content_415471.htm
Here's another in 2007, and has good data about poisoning yourself with toxic gas: http://asia.cnet.com/blogs/mobileojisan/post.htm?id=63001562
"Suicides in Japan reach a record high" (9/2/2000) http://bmj.bmjjournals.com/cgi/content/full/321/7260/528
I started looking into the news about the latest string of mass suicides in Japan, when I looked up the lyrics to a Pixies song, "Wave of Mutilation".
"The first verse is about the phenomenon, where japanese businessmen were putting their whole family in the car and driving off the dock. The second verse features the Marianas Trench." - Frank Black in SELECT, october 1997. The song title "Wave of Mutilation" is taken from a Japanese newspaper headline about the suicides.
I know it's an old song (circa '90), but I never really knew what it was about until now. Most people probably think, "Oh well, that's just Darwinism at it's finest." These same people bemoan the loss of pod of beached whales or snot up when they hear about a teenaged girl offing herself with tequila and vicodin. Consider the tremendous pressure that Japanese men are under to perform in business, their social and family obligations... and if the Japanese consider suicide honorable, why do they have Suicide Hotlines ringing off the hook?
I personally love whales, teenage girls, and Japanese people, and hate to hear about any of the above killing themselves.
So seriously, what's your take on all of this?

| Japanese Suicides Posted: 7/7/2008 10:11:15 PM | I love Japanese people too! They're so polite, appreciative, honorable and approachable. They are among the finest examples of humans, in my opinion. Next to Newfies.
But unfortuneately that society of honor makes situations of dishonor deplorable and the only logical way out, is to commit seppuku. How can one change a society?
