| How many of you have been tested for STDs?
Posted: 7/8/2008 4:39:10 AM | A thread on the condom below lead me to speculate on how many people are really practising safe sex. In the modern era, for me, safe sex is both partners agreeing to go to an STD clinic before they have sex.
1. Yes it ruins spontaneity, you have to discuss sex before you have it. This conversation should probably come after your first one or two makeout sessions. Once the clothes are off, all bets are too, passions being what they are.
2. Yes it will prevent STDs. Its one of the best methods for practicing safe sex. Even condoms fall short, since some disorders such as mononucleosis, herpes and M. contagiosum dont require sexual activity to be transmitted, just touching and kissing is a risk factor. Now condoms wont prevent the above 3 problems, nor will an STD workup. But an STD test permits you to discontinue condom use as a regular couple. Unless yer with a cheater or a player, in which case you enjoy roulette anyhow. Or do you think that condoms should be used 100% of the time during marriage, in the offchance that your partner might be having an affair? Not an easy question.
Personally I have been tested for all STDs and wont sleep with anyone unless we test out together at a clinic. Its awkward, yes, very. But hepatitis B, HIV and Chlamydia are more awkward by a long shot.
So, without judgement or moralizing, I wanted to poll you folks, and maybe talk about this issue a tad...how many of you have been recently tested for STDS? | |

The sad thing is that when I turned 40 (crap, I still refuse to believe I am that young) I went in for a full physical including STD's ... and I feel so violated because the doctor told me to turn around and bend over ... and then he did ... things ... to me that shouldn't be done. And I didn't even get dinner first!
But at least I know I don't have any STDs!

LMAO no kidding, there goes the spontaneity....How about you just come out and ask, an awkward question yes, but totally valid and less awkward then taking them to a clinic....One day we will all have to carry little cards with us that state if we are or not, I am sure....Present them to our potential sex partner to confirm....
And on topic, I am clean...woot!  Nobody needs to take me, I go on my own | |

I worry more about HPV, since it causes cancer, than the other ones you mentioned that can't easily be tested for.
So, testing helps, but it still isn't "safe sex" The only "safe sex" is having sex only with someone who is clean and only has sex with you. Limiting sex partners is safer, testing is important, too. | |

Didn't you know? That doctor is wanted in several states for unnecessary fondling of patients. You're lucky he didn't use the rectal probe. | |

Posted: 7/8/2008 6:57:33 AM | Change your vehicles oil and filter every 3,000 miles, change your furnace filters regularly and do obtain your STD and HIV testing on a regular basis. It's not only a great idea but more importantly it's the responsible thing to do.
For some it maybe simply a yearly thing for others it maybe a quarterly or more often issue. Only you know how sexually active you are. Unless you obtain yours at a "free clinic" there are certainly costs involved, if you're going to play simply factor testing in and make it part of your budget.
Been testing here for 16 years on a very regular basis, never a positive on anything. If you're going to play, do it responsibly. Pay very close attention to your privates (or publics for some...LOL). Of course if ever you feel there maybe even the slightest problem suspend all operations and immediately obtain testing. | |

Moreover, for HIV, you have to wait the three month window period. If you had unprotected sex within that window, the test will be inaccurate. Commonly, a person acquires HPV the first time they have sex. Equally commonly, most people clear it with a strong immune system. You don't test for it unless you want to know if you've been infected with an oncogenic type. You don't test for herpes unless you want to know if you have been exposed to type 1 or type 2. You don't test for Hepatitis C unless you've been sharing needles, works, straws or bills. When you ask to be tested, discuss your sexual practices so that the practitioner can match the test to your needs. The test results that you receive will tell you - and your prospective partner - that you don't have those particular STIs. After that, while you're together, sexual fidelity will go a long way to keeping you healthy. | |

Posted: 7/8/2008 6:53:04 PM | I have been tested and am relieved to say I am disease free... however I am admiting that it was only by the grace of God himself. Three years ago I found myself newly single after being tied down for 20+ years... 3 back to back relationships. Along with this new found freedom came this I'm grown and will do whatever I feel like doing attitude... well all I can say is that for a moment there I was like a kid in a candy store... in a bulk food candy store you know where it comes in a big bins ( dating sites ) and its easier to get to...where candy didnt come with wrappers... well...I made a few bad bad decisions and was very irresponsible. It took awhile to get up the guts to get tested.. I was scared to death.. I figured I had sealed my own fate... but I did it with support from my friends and family. I was tested at my doctors office for everything... some of the results came back quick but the Aids test results took over a week. I was so afraid that I actually wrote out a will. Yeah I know... you can live a long life still... but I was crazy worried... and I figured a person could not have that much fun without payin for it somehow. As I said by the grace of God... I have been tested regularly since and refuse to make the same mistakes ever again. So even though my little "call waitin" rap on my page may make me sound prudish... screw it... been there done that... was NOT worth it... no sex is worth dying for. No matter how GREAT!  COVER ME... I"M GOIN IN!!!! | |

I sure am glad now that when I give blood they only test your iron levels at the donor centre.

Posted: 7/8/2008 7:54:41 PM | STD test results are only as good as the day they were taken.... and standardized testing doesn't include Herpes, HIV, Hep, or HPV... have to ask for those... and there is no test for HPV in men unless they have an active outbreak of warts.... so they can carry it and pass it without even knowing they have it...
the concept of safe sex is an illusion... safer sex is an option... but condoms do not protect completely against HPV or Herpes... so there is always a risk there....
testing needs to be done over at least a year period if you want to be safest.... some STD's can be dormant in your system for at least that amount of time... many people believe if they have never had a symptom they don't have anything... which is a myth... many STD's are asymptomatic especially in women...
so... condoms... ALWAYS.... even when you think you are in a monogamous relationship... because people cheat... and parting gifts from someone else's cheating is never a good thing.... | |

Posted: 7/8/2008 8:07:09 PM | Hey folks, More often than not, STD tests only check for life/health threatening issues. If you ask for an STD test, you're going to be asked if you believe you may have been exposed to an STD.
As a rule, most Dr's only check for ghonnorhea, Clamydia, HIV & HEP A-D.
Unless you specify that you want to be checked for HPV (good luck men!) HSV, or Molluscum contagiosum (is there even a test for MC?), it's most likely not going to happen.
All you people wandering around saying your clean, think again... Ask for the right tests. | |

Posted: 7/8/2008 9:36:55 PM | It's a must! I have gone through the full battery of tests not only every year (and yes... this has to be specifically requested), but I've also gone after ANY sexual relationship has ended, regardless of other precautions taken.
If you ask for an STD test, you're going to be asked if you believe you may have been exposed to an STD.
It helps if you have a good relationship with your doctor. I happen to have a great doc, and I don't feel the least bit shy asking him to run the full battery of tests available. After my first LTR cheated on me and I worried for weeks, I learned that being serious about my health is WAY more important than a few moments of embarrassment.
Edited to add: I've been very lucky (absolutely in the clear every time!), and I know some of my friends have called me paranoid for asking for all the tests to be run every year, but I'd rather be labeled a little loopy than be sorry for it later. | |

Posted: 7/8/2008 9:57:26 PM | anyone who would answer no to the OP's question scares the living f*ck out of me! i get tested 2 - 3 times a year when single and without a monogamous partner, and would expect that my partner(s) to be tested annually at the very least. no one's perfect, accidents happen no matter how careful you are, and i'm going to make damn sure that my choices and those of my partners ensure that both my health and theirs is protected with reasonable precautions.
Louder than Love: since you mentioned using blood donation as a form of STD testing, please remember that this will only screen for blood borne STDs such as hepatitis, syphilis and HIV. many other STDs are not blood borne, and you should get yourself to a doctor for a thorough STD screening rather than relying on blood donation to determine your STD status. | |
