Hi guys,

I have been trying to take a multivitamin for years, but all the ones I have tried end up upsetting my tummy. I had to stop taking it with food because it made everything come up. Then even without that, it still made me sick.

For those of you who take multivitamins, can you suggest a more natural multivitamin or ulternative... or maybe a brand you use that doesn't upset your stomache?

Everybody's system is a little different.

Try it with milk. Or try taking it at night before bed time.

I like the one a day weight smart vitamins. Sometimes it does make me a little sick to my stomach though. It generally helps when I eat it with something or drink some milk. If u can't take vitamins make sure u are getting enuff nutrients in your diet.

I had a similar problem with multivitamins, although not as extreme as your experience. But, my upset stomach was enough to make me stop taking them. The brands I was attempting to use were Centrum and One A Day, with no success. I told my story at a health food store. The rep. said that many over the counter vitamins are binded with petroleum products and it is the health food industries belief that it is the petroleum that causes the stomach upset.

I am aware that reps in health food stores will try to sell a person everything in the store, but in this case her recommendation worked. She recommended any of their vitamins (of course) that were whole foods based and not bound with petroleum products. I was also offered a money back or exchange guarantee if they bothered my stomach.

I chose Source of Life by Nature's Plus. I'm happy to report, that they have never once upset my stomach even if not taken with food. And these vitamins are many times stronger than Centrum or One A Day and much larger. I don't take as many as is recommended on the bottle, but just 1/3 of the recommended dose provides more than Centrum and One A Day.

Thank you very much for the suggestion.... but I have tried this. Milk comes right back up. Before bed just makes me restless.

Hehe... this is the one I am taking. I just didn't want to state the brand in case it was working great for someone else.

Thank you though!

I am trying to do it this way through food and the protien bar I have found that is filled with lots of nutrients.

Flintstones. No seriously.......it's better than getting none of that stuff at all and it won't get you sick! And yes sometimes the "adult" ones can be a bit strong if you have a weaker-type stomach (let's face it some people get sick easier than others). Also, drinking something like an Ensure at night, or a Slim Fast shake if you watch weight and all that, or a MuscleMilk vanilla (which is the one I like -- 29 grams of protein per drink...) all that can be good dietary supplements as well. Most people just don't eat THAT balanced of a diet (unless you're a bodybuilder with a nutritionist...maybe), where they're going to get all of that stuff everyday without taking it in the form of some kind of vitamin or shake or what have you.

Try Chlorella, it is not a vitamin really. It is an algae, but it has all the vitamins you will need plus it has protein. It is not that expensive.
I take Vitamineral Greeen it all natural from food sources it is expensive but for me it lasts about 2 months so it's not that bad. It has chlorella and a whole lot more but it's taste like crap lol If you decide to get it you may want to mix with fresh fruit juice or carrot juice.

Hi there, ahem

Now as for this i would say what kind are you taking ? Are you taking the compressed ones ? or the liquid caps ?

There are vitamins that are made from organic components which help the body to build health.

WHen you buy your vitamins do you know whether they are good for your body ??

Natures vitamns heal. Synthetic vitamins stimulate, but do not heal.

Natural complexes are ionically active. Which is an extremely important for the absorbability of a nutrient. The smaller the nutrient is the more capability it has of entering into the combination with other elements and forming electrical matrix required to transer energy to a cell. Synthetic vitamins due to their non-ionic structure, do not have this capability, nor are they complete complexes.

Any food or vitamin must contain the appropriate live enzymes to be utilized by cells. Enzymes make the transport of nutrients through cell walls possible. Live foods come complete with enzymes to assist with its digestion and assimilation.

Most vitamins and minerals supplements do not contain enzymes, they are chemically processed in laboratories. Such mass produced synthetic products are good for profit and shelf life, but they are stimulative, toxic and detrimental to the body. They are unnatural and cannot be used by the body for health.

I know its along reply but there is alot more info about this topic but in ending what you taking must be organic in origin and contain enyzmes. It must be dervived from natural food sources. Vitamins and minerals must be delivered in trace amounts, as they are in whole natual food.

I actually was not advertising the "Whole Foods" store. The health food store was not called "Whole Foods" at the time. However, the store I went to has been bought by "Whole Foods" and that is the name of the store now. You can also get these vitamins and the same advice at Akins. My understanding of what the rep meant is to make sure the vitamins do NOT contain "petroleum" based products to bind the tablets. Stomach upset on vitamins, especially multivitamins, is a common complaint apparently.

You can also order Source of Life online. But, it's some more fun to go to the store an risk loosing your life savings. :)

I am the same way--I get sick to my stomach when I take multis. Some say it's the IRON that makes you ill--how about taking a vitamin WITHOUT as much iron (not for women only)? Now, since I can't do the pills, I use AirBorne as my vitamin pill (I dont' take them every day, anyway). It's chock full of vits/minerals AND is soluble, so a fizzy drink instead of a pill.

Most "cheap" multivitamins are synthetic, that is why they make you sick. These vitamins are made by companies that know nothing about vitamins.
The multivitamins to use should be made from whole foods, and the best one I can think of is from Doctor Mercola. They cost a little more, but have all natural ingredients.
Here is a good way to test if the multi is good or bad:
Check the B12. If it uses cyanocobalamine, it is cheap.
If it uses methylcobalamine, it is worthy.

I am not sold on multivitamins period - though if i were taking some I would look to use Nature's best.

Are you using it to help your training or to just keep healthy?

I think over the counter vitamins are over rated.

Are you really better off than the person who eats healthy food and is very fit ?

All you are doing is making a lot of people rich in my opinion.

I am not convinced.

If you come up you never get ill or sick........many people who never get the flu shot or who never take these vitamins get ill either.

Sometimes Niacin, Manganese and Magnesium upset the stomach, especially if you take a multi-vitamin on an empty stomach. Their benefits are also not so huge.

I take my vitamins separately, because I have had the same trouble with multi-vitamins. I take iron in the morning along with a super B complex C vitamin. Then I take 1000mg. Calcium with D at night, plus fish oil. I find these help me recover from my daily exercise over night. (note: don't take iron and calcium together, the block the absorption of one another -- a good argument for not taking them in a multi-vitamin). None of these separately have ever upset my stomache. I just take the CVS brand or whatever is cheap.

Anyone who says you should be getting these vitamins from food is uninformed. Especially for a woman around 30, iron supplements are so important, as our periods tend to get heavier with age, depleating us of precious iron once a month. Being low iron or aenimic can cause depression and serious lethargy, so that you'll think you are really in a deep psychological depression. A few days on iron and your mood and energy will completely turn around.

B, C, D and iron (and folic acid if you are thinking of pregnancy) are the most essential vitamins for women and there is no way we can get enough of these from food. You won't be getting all the mystery vitamins in a multi-vitamin, but at least you will be able to take the important ones every day. The other vitamins you can probably get no problem from eating a healthy variety of veggies.

Hahahaha!! Every month, about a week before that, my body goes into a crazy craving for steak. Not that lean, okay to eat steak. No no.... it has to be thick, marbled, and almost rare. "Show it the oven and bring it out" type thing! If I do not allow myself this steak, my body hates me, and I hate everyone equally. THEN... I cry for a couple days... just because.

... so yes... I know all about the need for iron

I swear, what ever man ends up tolorating all that (grilling me the steak and patting my back when I cry) will deffinately be worth marrying.

I am not considering having babies... but someone else may be. So thank you for posting this.

And yes, women can never get enough certain vitamins. Men either. Just through foods alone. ESPECIALLY if people are eating organically. I believe eating organic IS the better choice. It is much healthier. BUT... because these foods are not processed... it means they do not have the added nutrients that the bigger organizations put in their food.

Yes, they say iron is the only vitamin that you can "crave." I crave lentil beans at my time of the month and sometimes steak too, though I don't eat red meat generally.

Try eating your steak with something high in vitamin C like red peppers or an orange. It helps your body absorb iron. Don't drink green tea (which is generally healthy) with iron rich foods or iron supplements, as this interferes with iron absorption.

Supplements are important, but it's good to get the most out of meat and vegetable iron as well.

My supplement routine would have you puking all day. Before San Antonio scolds me, I must mention that I EAT REAL FOOD. Meat, vegetables, nuts, fruits and the occasional starch.

I agree that when you are in a calorie deficit that you need to use supplements.

Daily I take:

Kroger brand Complete w/ Lycopene and Lutein (comparable to Centrum complete for half the price)
Kroger brand B Natural Complex with C (B vitamins are crucial for developing lean muscle tissue)
Extra C 1000mg (you cant take too much C)
Biotin 5000mcg (for hair and nails)
Omega 3 Fish Oil 4000mg (for brainiacs, joint tissues and those healthy omegas)
Fiber Choice plus Calcium Sugar Free 2 tablets (just for insurance, a girl cant get too much fiber)

I will take specialty supps when I am involved in heavy strength training, otherwise I skip it when I'm not lifting:

AtLarge's ETS (mag, zinc, C and E, and Micro-Lactin, for muscle soreness)
OR
BioTest's ZMA (again mag and zinc, your anabolic minerals)

BioTest's Beta-7 (only use this when I am lifting on a daily basis)
OR
BioTest's SE7En (ditto)

Then there are the thermogenics, commonly known as fatburners but I use them in coordination with strength training. I seldom take a full dose, one caplet usually is enough for me. It's my 'boost' in the gym, lot of guys I work out with use caffeine because it's cheaper:

BioTest's Hot-Rox Extreme (yohimbe is the active ingredient)
AtLarge's Nitor (guarana and kola nut)
