CD/DVD wont run on pc
Posted: 7/8/2008 3:47:34 PM
Ok here's the situation. Two weeks ago I had a friend, a fairly good semi pro photographer, take pics of me for use on singles sites such as this. I was VERY pleased with what he accomplished previewning them with him on his pc. He copied them for me to DVD and when I brought it home and placed it in my D drive I got an error message saying I needed to insert a disk in to the D drive. What the.......?? I just did that. Tried search for files and once again got a message there was no disk in drive D. (excuse me yes there IS) So I posted a notice on another web blog and a guy told me it might be because the DVD is lousy. So I tell this to my friend and he copies the contents to another DVD and as insurance on to a CD. All three of the disks he made for me run fine on his pc but, you guessed it, NOT on mine. grrrrrr So what may be going on here? A similar CD I had taken last fall of poses for singles sites runs just fine on my CD (Hate those pics.) as well as CDs given to me by Meijer of photos I take of family and the like. Anyway if it helps I have a Compaq Armada 7800 laptop that is sitting on a docking station because the electronic system is screwy. I'm still running windows 2000. Any ideas on how I can get this blasted machine to recognize at least ONE of the CDs/DVDs would be appreciated. They tell me pics on profiles get more responses but hey what can you do if your pc refuses to recognize the ones you have??

Ok, this might seem like a silly question, but is it a DVD drive in your computer - not just a CD? It won't be able to read it if it's a CD drive. Just thought I'd throw that out there. Anyway, if that isn't the problem, then there's a possibility he is not closing the session of the DVD disk. Unless you finalize the disk, it can only be read on DVD burners, and cannot be read in a DVD player. It simply means that the disk is left open in order to continue to add data to it over a period of time. However, in your case, you don't want to add any more files. Maybe ask him if he finalized the disk. Just a thought.

I got an error message saying I needed to insert a disk in to the D drive. What the.......??

Indicates » Your Optical Unit cannot read DVD Disks, DVD-R, DVD+R or DVD-RW.

Sometimes they only read DVD Movies off DVD-R, but can only read Data (Yellow Book) on a DVD+R. Compaq is really weird on this.

Tried search for files and once again got a message there was no disk in drive D.

Indicates » The Disk was mis-burned, went corrupt or not session closed out.

All three of the disks he made for me run fine on his pc but, you guessed it, NOT on mine.

Indicates » Was burned using a Mode or File System your CD-ROM does not support.

So what may be going on here?

Sometimes going to the Vendor's Site looking for a Firmware update may resolve the Situation. Make sure your Disk is clean.

All three of the disks he made for me run fine on his pc but, you guessed it, NOT on mine. grrrrrr So what may be going on here?

Now we are not talking about DVDs anymore, but CDs. That clearly indicates its a Content Issue if they won't read either.

So I tell this to my friend and he copies the contents to another DVD and as insurance on to a CD.

I have no Idea how and what he did to split them over 3 CDs. Why don't you ask him, or the Pro Photographer?

Anyway if it helps I have a Compaq Armada 7800 laptop that is sitting on a docking station because the electronic system is screwy.

I have had more than a few Compaq Optical Units pack it in on me. Make sure its properly connected and docked.

Any ideas on how I can get this blasted machine to recognize at least ONE of the CDs/DVDs would be appreciated.

Open Windows Explorer. Go to » Tools » Folder Options » View Tab » uncheck » "Hide Extensions for known File Types". Then hit OK.

Now put in the Disk(s). Go to your Optical Unit Drive and tell me what File Names you see.

OK now I'm even more confused. I am SOOO non pc literate. What I wouldn't give for a good old "Just wave the disk over your head 3 times, say Kolla Wolla Boom Boom twice, then insert into pc and all will be fine" response. lol Maybe I'll just have to hijack my son's pc. It's newer has more stuff and besides I bought it for him in the first place for technically it IS MINE!!! Right?? lol

If that Armada 7800 is factory stock, with respect to the drives, then it for sure does not have a DVD player. I've rebuilt dozens of A7800s (They're solid bricks, and useful nowadays as a kids' laptop due to their robust durability). They have CD ROM, which will not read DVDs.

Here is the difference between a DVD and CD:

CD data is arranged in a wound coil, same as the grooves on a phonograph record. DVDs hold more data because the tracks are wound tighter than a CD. Thusly, a CD drive is incapable of reading a DVD because it can't follow tracks that tight. Think of the difference between a 78 RPM record, with its wider grooves, and differnt winding, and a 33 RPM, that can't use a 78 RPM needle.

Other than that, can you play a music CD on either computer?

Interesting, that you mention all of this as this particuular laptop was given to me and I am the third owner. Previous to me it was used by a pre-adolescent because of how durable it is and prior to her was in the pool of a major technology business. The aforementioned adolescent's father works for said major technology business so they always have the latest stuff. I'm suspecting it doesn't have the capability to read the DVD disks but what I don't understand is why it wont read the CD disk my friend created of the same pics. I can run other CDs on this machine just not the one CD that means so much right now. As for hijacking the one I bought for my son that IS going to happen SOON! Another option, for confirmation purposes only, is to go to the local Kinko's and rent one of their PCs for like a half hour and see if the files can be read on it both CD and DVD. If so then obviously somethig is amiss with this PC and likely why it was "Given" to me in ther first place. I'm also going to try that process sugessted by the guy above you on seeing what is said about particular files. Apart from this I just sit and wait until I ambush my son and get back what I bought.

got a work laptop, on the side of the drive case is embossed the words DVD, it might be embossed with CD in your case

goto my computer, find the cd or dvd drive, right click it, show properties then look under general and hardware

should be enough pointers to determine what make and model of drive it is and if it is a DVD or CD drive

give the disc to your son and ask him to work it out, it might be easier ?

Hi,

What sometimes happens is that the DVD or CD burner on on PC isn't compatible with that on another PC. You said you're friend gave you both a CD and a DVD right?

So just ignore all the above telling you to check what kind of drive you have as you don't really care :P

What I would do is try the disks on another PC, not your or your friends and see if they work on that one. If they worn on your friends no problem i would guess its probably a compatibility issue.

You could ask your friend to Zip the images up and upload them online for free, you could then download them onto your PC. Then you wouldn't need a disc at all! Hope this helped and lemme know if you need any more info :P

what he means is that most older PC's have DVD-R and most DVD players are DVD+R

current ie new pc's have DVD _/+R

hmm uploading the files to the net is going to take some time, maybe a good few hours, quicker to do the simple stuff

when I burn data dvd's there is the option to burn multisession, this will work on the creator's pc, but no-one else's

I burn data dvd's as no session, ie the session is finalised at the end of the burn process and anyone can view it, of course if you only have a CD, then trying to read a DVD is rather pointless

The fact that both the DVD and the CD won't work, but others do is why I went with the compatibility issue. Multi session just means you can write to the disk again if it still has space, it should still work on any other pc.

If nothing else works then uploading them is a decent enough idea, zip em up and away you go.

If the DVD was not finalised, you won't be able to see anything. Download ISOBuster (http://www.isobuster.com/), and use the evaluation version. It'll show you what's on the disc and should let you copy the files to your pc.
