Want some torture with your peanuts?

Aviation Security

Just when you thought you’ve heard it all...

A senior government official with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has expressed great interest in a so-called safety bracelet that would serve as a stun device, similar to that of a police Taser®. According to this promotional video found at the Lamperd Less Lethal website, the bracelet would be worn by all airline passengers.

This bracelet would:

• take the place of an airline boarding pass

• contain personal information about the traveler

• be able to monitor the whereabouts of each passenger and his/her luggage

• shock the wearer on command, completely immobilizing him/her for several minutes

The Electronic ID Bracelet, as it’s referred to as, would be worn by every traveler “until they disembark the flight at their destination.” Yes, you read that correctly. Every airline passenger would be tracked by a government-funded GPS, containing personal, private and confidential information, and that it would shock the customer worse than an electronic dog collar if he/she got out of line?

Clearly the Electronic ID Bracelet is an euphuism for the EMD Safety Bracelet, or at least it has a nefarious hidden ability, thus the term ID Bracelet is ambiguous at best. EMD stands for Electro-Musclar Disruption. Again, according to the promotional video the bracelet can completely immobilize the wearer for several minutes.

So is the government really that interested in this bracelet? Yes!

According to a letter from DHS official, Paul S. Ruwaldt of the Science and Technology Directorate, office of Research and Development, to the inventor whom he had previously met with, he wrote, “To make it clear, we [the federal government] are interested in…the immobilizing security bracelet, and look forward to receiving a written proposal.” The letterhead, in case you were wondering, came from the DHS office at the William J. Hughes Technical Center at the Atlantic City International Airport, or the Federal Aviation Administration headquarters.

In another part of the letter, Mr. Ruwaldt confirmed, “It is conceivable to envision a use to improve air security, on passenger planes.”

Would every paying airline passenger flying on a commercial airplane be mandated to wear one of these devices? I cringe at the thought. Not only could it be used as a physical restraining device, but also as a method of interrogation, according to the same aforementioned letter from Mr. Ruwaldt.

Would you let them put one of those on your wrist? Would you allow the airline employees, which would be mandated by the government, to place such a bracelet on any member of your family?

Why are tax dollars being spent on something like this? Is this a police state or is it America?

Some ninnies will doubtless argue that "if you behave then you would have nothing to worry about". That may be so but treating everyone like potential criminals is not a good direction for a "free" society to go.

On the bright side we will no longer have to worry about parents and their unruly children. Just think about it.

Mommy, I'm bored (SHOCK)

Daddy, I have to go to the bathroom. (SHOCK)

I DON'T LIKE YOU. (SHOCK)

Are we there yet? (SHOCK)

I'm hungry. (SHOCK)

No more worrying about them unruly children.

Well being that I am a Flight Attendant. I actually applaud the idea!!
We have such unruley passengers it would be great to have the upper hand.

Today for example-a flight out of NY was cancelled due to a number of passengers acting out.

Also if there were ever terrorists on board we can just shock em!

By that reasoning, why not have ever citizen in the United States equipped with such a device, "just in case"

UPDATE: Lamperd Less Lethal Inc., the company that designed the EMD Safety Bracelet, has responded to the controversy as follows.

We wish to clear up any misconceptions regarding the EMD Safety Bracelet for Airline Security.

The bracelets remain inactive until a hijacking situation has been identified. At such time a designated crew member will activate the bracelets making them capable of delivering the punitive measure - but only to those that need to be restrained. We believe that all passengers will welcome deliverance from a hijacking, as will the families, carriers, insurance providers etc. The F-16 on the wingtip is not to reassure the passengers during a hijacking but rather to shoot them down. Besides activation using the grid screen, the steward / stewardess will have a laser activator that can activate any bracelet as needed by simply pointing the laser at the bracelet - that laser dot only needs to be within 10 inches of the bracelet to activate it.

Deliverance??? WTF! I've seen that movie and I don't want to go there...

A grid screen....what if someone gets a hold of that? Activate everyone just to be sure?

This is fear mongering at it's best....

Talk about a nanny state....only they don't care about you....

Who really thinks that since 9/11 that if someone gets up with a box cutter and says they are taking over the plane that they are not going to get ripped apart by the other passengers now? Unless they can some how get guns on the plane no one is going to be hijacking any American planes again.

And I would not wear a potentially lethal torture device on my wrist. Period. Tasers kill, it’s rare but they do kill.

This would never get past the lawyers anyway. They won’t put these on a 90 year old grandmother with a bad ticker and if one person can get a pass then someone will sue and then everyone gets a pass. So it won’t happen anyway.

Waste of money, but then wasting our money is what the government is best at after all.

You both savvy real well. This is the future. Welcome to globalization, the upcoming one world currency, the future one world leader, and the controlling bracelet/verichip or whathaveyou -- all of it happening right before our very eyes.

I don't think so. DHS is a security company trying to find a market for its product, I'd be more concerned if some company actually bought into it.

Those bracelets are just a variation of the shock collars used as "invisible fences" and to shock dogs to make them stop barking. Nice that inventors think of people as unruly animals.

Do they make a cock ring? I'm asking for a friend.

I saw a movie where they guy had an exploding collar on his neck. If he stepped past a certain point, it went off. He only got to do that once. Then twenty years later they came out with these "invisible fence" shock collars for dogs. Now we have the bracelets for people. We should just go straight for the exploding head neck collars. Better yet, everyone stay home under their beds.

I'd like to think that people would stop flying and that would be the reason our government would not let the aviation industry start using them. But then again, all it takes is another hijacked plane or another kind of terrorist attack and people will turn once again into sheeple, giving up freedom for a sense of safety. I certainly would never fly under such circumstances and I know my friends would feel the same.

OK, let me see if I understand this. You would climb into a big aluminum tube with rocket engines attached to it, blast off into the open sky with your life entirely in the hands of a pilot, crew and support staff you never met, spend hours hurtling along 30,000 feet above the ground with no apprehension, but you would not wear the shock bracelet because it might possibly be used to shock you if you are deemed a threat?

As someone with a pacemaker, I have to wonder what the electrical shock would/could do to my pacemaker.

I wonder if it has no effect, or if DHS has even taken that into consideration.

Pardon me if I say, "No f****n' way!"

I'm thinking of the fun I could have if I hacked the controller. Then played Bach's Toccata and Fugue in D minor with my fellow passengers' screams.

The point is that in a free society, anyone is supposed to be innocent until proven guilty. I was brought up to believe that was the foundation of a society's legal system. By forcing paying customers to submit to wearing a device like the one described is tantamount to considering people guilty until proven innocent.
As far as I am concerned, if you fiddle with the fundamentals of a society then anything else is pretty much up for grabs.

The whole concept of "innocent until proven guilty" is fast becoming a thing of the past. "everyone is guilty of somehting". Why? Because, in truth, most people are. They may not even see it themselves, but, they are. "It's only a crime IF you get caught" is more the mindset of most people today...therefore the "innocents" must be protected form them.
Hey...don't want to wear a shock bracelet? Don't fly then. Simple huh?

Boy they really want to ruin the airline industry don't they? Who would honestly fly if such a stupid idea were enacted?

Oops spilled my bottled water on my bracelet. *fried*

DHS. Pssshhhhh what a waste. Give me my tax money back instead of making useless departments like that.

You're thinking of the beginning of the movie The Running Man with Arnold Schwarzenegger. :P

Looks like more big government in action. More government, more control, less freedom.

Of course this will never happen and this guy who wrote the letter, is just a minor peon in the grand scheme of things.
