| | The word Black and Walt DisneyPage 1 of 2 (1, 2) | I have been down to my local freezer shop this morning with my sis and whilst standing at the checkout she noticed a box of Chock ices with the name Black Chocks on the box..She asked if you could have that written on a box of Chock ices these days with all the offence that seems to be taken to the word BLACK..Well can you?
Also whilst standing there chatting about it, one of my local hair dressers said that her sons play last Christmas, Snow White and the 7 Dwarfs had to be changed to Snow White and the 7 Fairies.( I can see the gay scene putting a stop to that to )
Now Walt Disney never made a movie called Snow White and the 7 Fairies..
So this got me thinking, they can make schools change the name of their plays because of the offence some may take, but can they make a movie company change the title of its film, and probably its casting as a Dwarf looks nothing like a Fairy. ..If not then why change the name of the panto..

| The word Black and Walt Disney Posted: 7/13/2008 5:23:38 AM | | Too many people in powerful positions with egg shell personalities in my opinion. And too many who just want to exert their authority to make themselves look grand. Black is black, a dwarf is a dwarf and fairies live at the bottom of the garden! | |

| The word Black and Walt Disney Posted: 7/13/2008 5:31:39 AM | pc gone mad and its even madder we all stand for it!
Black is black, white is white, a dwarf is a dwarf, fat is fat, thin is thin, a brain storm is just that..not a thought shower!!
ffs where will it all end!

I agree.
Why is it deemed offensive to use the term black, but perfectly acceptable to still use the term white?.
And why did the school prefer to use fairies instead of dwarfs because that seems like blatent discrimination to me.The story is snow white and the seven dwarfs so if they wanted to become all pc about it they should have changed it to snow white and the seven vertically challenged people, though i doubt this would have gone down well with the dwarf population, who prefer the term dwarf!.
Can we no longer call a spade a spade or do we have to use the term hand held metal digging device?

| The word Black and Walt Disney Posted: 7/13/2008 5:45:21 AM | Ah Political Correctness rears its ugly head once more! There are a lot of people changing traditional Fairy tails due to the current climate, I find it appalling, mind you this has been done throughout history, some of the stories by, for instance, by the brothers Grimm were truly bloodthirsty in their original form.
As for colours... Why are white boards acceptable, but black boards not? Unbelievable!
People need to understand, it is the intent that matters, not the words.

| The word Black and Walt Disney Posted: 7/13/2008 5:48:28 AM | I do believe the accepted term is Little People. I could be wrong though as I don't actually know any to ask.
I do think it's mad though. Most of the time no-one is offended until it is pointed out by some over zealous campaigner or some such that we should be!

| The word Black and Walt Disney Posted: 7/13/2008 5:55:19 AM | bleh they have nothing better to do than find stupid ways of controlling us even more!!
if they wanted it to be a correct title it should of been "snow caucasion and the seven vertically challenged people"
whats next? they gunna say we have to call a raccoon a rac-ethnic-minority??

Well it used to be PORG (person of restricted growth), but that may have been changed now.
WTF!!!!
By the same criteria then is it acceptable to say Snow WHITE??
|
| The word Black and Walt Disney Posted: 7/13/2008 5:58:49 AM | Courtesy of a site for dwarfism!
Dwarf (plural "dwarves"!) Acceptable term for little person. It often means non-proportional LP.
Short-statured person Acceptable term for little person.
So we were all right, kind of.
This information was from a proper site so changing the name is just ridiculous if the people you are trying not to offend were never offended in the first place.
|
| The word Black and Walt Disney Posted: 7/13/2008 6:01:32 AM | if they wanted it to be a correct title it should of been "snow caucasion and the seven vertically challenged people"
"Water in it's solid state caucasion female and the , less than eight but more than six, vertically challenged people"
Lets not forget that water might get offended and so might the number seven as well.

| The word Black and Walt Disney Posted: 7/13/2008 6:05:10 AM | Snow is white which is fair enough
But why would it be better to have 7 Homosexuals in a Walt Disney play rather than 7 vertically challenged people.
A dwarf is a mythical creature of small stature, dwarfism is a condition...achondroplasia apparently
VVVVVVVVVV changed my post...think Mof's getting excited down there

| The word Black and Walt Disney Posted: 7/13/2008 6:07:31 AM | Well whan I want Black paint I ask for Black paint coz its Black, unless they have come up with some other name for it.
I also ask for Black bin bags ,and have yet to be told by any shop that they are to be called bin bags not Black bin bags.
And as long as the word Dwarf is in the dictionary ( which it is ) then I will say Dwarf, not small person, vertically challened or anything else...
My Christmas tree/decorations will go up every year and I will celebrate everything I have in the past in the future wether anyone likes it or not..

Is that a question? Is it because your kinky. I saw 'Gollywogs' on sale for the first time in ages the other day. A dear friend from childhood who happened to be black would be the first to say "shove your PC up your arris!"
Sometimes the steps taken not to 'offend' are offensive!
^^^^^ x2 shame I didn't change mine!

| The word Black and Walt Disney Posted: 7/13/2008 6:46:05 AM | I remember during training with the probation service, most students were trying to best each other and show how PC they could be. I had had a long discussion with one lady as I had said I was having a black coffee. She stated that it should be coffee without milk. She kept giving examples and banged on about the point until we grew angry at each other.
Later that week she was filling in an application form. She put her pencil down and started looking round her desk. I sussed it and immediately passed her a black pen saying "Ink without milk?" The humour and the point were both lost on her. She still works in probation down on the west coast in a court team.
I have hundreds of these types of stories from my time in probation and social sevices. It's all bollox. As we all know on here you can use any word you like and make it offensive if that's your intent. I refuse to kowtow to it.

| The word Black and Walt Disney Posted: 7/13/2008 6:50:14 AM | Guess that some people, mostly whites bend over backwards not to offend anyone and end up offending the people they trying to "protect"
Black is simply a colour, like if I want a t-shirt that is black, I ask for one and not some vague description of it
luckily not in a job where need to be politically correct :)

| The word Black and Walt Disney Posted: 7/13/2008 7:55:59 AM | totally mystified that being a white man in uk an words like black, are racist, like "baa baa black sheep" is frowned apon.or got changed to green sheep,
That story is a myth. Debunked by Private Eye when it first surfaced in the eighties.

The research that private eye did into the story unearthed that the children were encouraged to replace the word 'Black' with lots of other adjectives NOT because of 'political correctness gone mad' and it could cause offence but to *gasp!* improve their vocabularies. They used the word 'black' too as well as 'white'.
That is what was discovered about the stories that the press ran with and altered to suit their agenda and whip up discontent. I can't comment on your own personal experiences but if you have come across the words being changed because they may cause offence and not for educational purposes then the people doing it are clearly idiots.
|
| The word Black and Walt Disney Posted: 7/13/2008 12:10:27 PM | the people were indeed idiots...and had my children still have been attending the school...i would have been up there is a flash to complain.
it was based on being more 'pc' although the head teacher tried to skirt the issue(questioned by another parent i know)....makes my blood boil even now.

| The word Black and Walt Disney Posted: 7/13/2008 12:36:17 PM | If someone who is short is 'vertically challenged' does that mean that someone who is thin is 'horizontally challenged'?
If that is the case then someone who carries 'a few extra pounds' must be 'horizontally un-challenged'
As I don't much like conflict I'd rather be 'un-challenged' than 'challenged'..... so I'll just stay fat!!
