| Female Hunters Posted: 7/15/2008 1:12:27 PM | | Now, how many people think that hunting is just a guy thing, and women should not get into this outdoor sport? We will add in target shooting as well. I know of a few gals on here, that do, have done, and used too. But, what about the ones, that never tried, because of the ( guy thing)? There seems to be a new wide spread interest, by the growing numbers of outdoor websites, and big name stores, that a geared toward womens interest in this now. | |

|
| Female Hunters Posted: 7/15/2008 2:21:28 PM | No hunting is not just a guy thing ... It's just that, while the male prey on wild life in general, the female prey specifically on wild men. Been like this for aeons...
Cheers! | |

| Female Hunters Posted: 7/15/2008 9:36:13 PM | I've been thinking of letting the 'cougar' come out .......... | |
|
| Female Hunters Posted: 7/16/2008 8:53:36 AM | Debatable at best. Theoretically, hunting is anyones sport. When it comes to having a woman/women in Moose Camp for a week or two.......thats quite another story. As far as I am concerned........thats "my" week to let loose......hers is in Fargo cleaning out the stores. Each to his own. | |

| Female Hunters Posted: 7/16/2008 9:12:09 AM | I'm not a hunter by any means, but it's fun to shoot at stuff!! LOL (that would be target practice you sillies.)
I'm not worried about what is predominately thought of as a guy/girl thing. If you're interested in something and want to try it, go for it and don't worry about what anyone else thinks.

| Female Hunters Posted: 7/16/2008 2:57:03 PM | I have not checked at what is currently being offered to attract women into the sport of target shooting, or hunting, so I cannot comment on that.
However, I will share some insight to my experience with both target shooting and hunting. Growing up as an only child and your basic run of the mill "Daddy's Girl", I was fortunate enough to have a great relationship with my dad and learned many "boy" things in my life that has given me a wonderful gift of life experiences, and an of some things that I have in common with men, that many women cannot comprehend or find enjoyable. Some of these things were right up my alley (so to speak), because as a child, I was a tom boy. I had more boys as friends, than I had girls as friends. To me many of the girls were just to sissy and boring.
My dad grew up in rural Ontario, in a family where everyone knew how to shoot a gun and learned all about the respect required to use a firearm. When I was about 8 or 9 my dad asked if I wanted to learn to shoot a gun and try target shooting. I said yes, he then said that if I liked it, I could join him and his buddies when they went out hunting. He explained the basics to me at home about how firearms work, the differences between many of them, how to hold one and briefly explained ammunition, aim, distance, and recoil. So, the story continues with us going out to the bush, setting up some targets and he brought a few different rifles/shotguns for me to try. I started off with a 22 cal. rifle and found that boring. So, he looked at me, smirked and said - ok, here are all my guns, what do you want shoot. Well, being a "girl", I happened to like the engraved metal design on one of his shotguns, and I chose that one. It happened to be a double barrel 12 g shotgun with a smaller barrel on top that took cartridges. So I decided to try that one. So, my dad sets me up, explains exactly how important it is to hold the stock into your shoulder to lessen the recoil, loaded 2 shotgun shells and asked if I really wanted to try it. I said Oh yea, dad I can handle it. So I took aim, squeezed the trigger and fired it. Well Holy Sh!t! now that was not boring, it moved me back about a foot, I never dropped the gun and actually hit the target. But talk about fully understanding what recoil was all about. My dad laughed his a$$ off and my shoulder was sore as I had never experienced anything like that before. So, after a brief rest, I tried again and in the course of the afternoon, we shot off a couple of boxes of shells and some other bullets from other rifles, and it was a good afternoon. After that I was enrolled in the Manitoba Hunters Safety Program that was run out of the Wildlife Federation Building that was behind the old Labatts Brewery on Notre Dame Ave. I think I was one of the first 25 or 50 females ever to go through the program and I never regretted it.
I tried hunting and realized that was just not something that interested me as I am unable to kill a defenceless animal. The first thing I ever killed was a male Mallard duck and after when I saw it dead and lifeless - I just cried and felt bad, that I took its life. I was unable to clean it and when my mom cooked our quary, I was unable to eat it, as I just felt so bad. So, I could never hunt an animal or bird to kill, but I certainly dont begrudge anyone who can/does hunt as long as they kill their prey quickly/painlessly, and consume what they kill. I experienced the adrenaline rush and satisfaction in taking your prey, but just could not live with killing a defenceless creature that was not doing me any harm. However, that is just me. Now, I do like wild meet, and have enjoyed many meals, just as long as I am not the one who did the killing.
I have participated in target shooting from time to time and it is a fun sport that requires practice and skill.
To the women who are interested in this.................I would say go for it and give it try. We are lucky to live in a country where we can experience a broad range of different sports. Just remember guns dont kill people - People Kill People.

| Female Hunters Posted: 7/16/2008 3:07:25 PM | Trouble your made me pmsl
But seriously I really couldn't kill Bambi, Bambi's mother or father. I cried when some cats killed some little baby bunnies.
No not a hunter of the animal kind, think I'm the same hunter as trouble.

| Female Hunters Posted: 7/16/2008 3:51:42 PM | I have no problem with women being involved in hunting/target shooting. Like all sports, I think it should be open to everyone who wants to try it. I also recognize that hunting isn't for everyone (male and female). I tend not to comment on my invovlement unless asked as I know that the concept upsets some people.
The number of hunters (for waterfowl, I can't comment on other game) is declining in Manitoba and I imagine that this decline has affected sales amongst the various outfitter stores. I wouldn't be surprised that they are viewing female hunters as an underdeveloped market that they now hope to sell to.
I laughed at Sue's comments about the shotgun's recoil. Just goes to show you how much they have improved recoil reduction technology over the years.

| Female Hunters Posted: 7/16/2008 4:19:40 PM | | When my daughter took all of her courses, I was there, I sat in on the Hunters Safety one, just for fun as a refresher. And, I was surprised at the ratio, of male to female. My daughter was not alone, there was about 8 girls, and 12 boys, then about 2 or 3 men, and the rest of the class was ladies. | |
|
| Female Hunters Posted: 7/16/2008 6:34:32 PM | "the rest of the class were ladies"
Now, why does that come across, as a slightly scarey thought??
|
| Female Hunters Posted: 7/16/2008 6:50:40 PM | | Maybe, because of the fact they want to spend more time with the s/o | |

| Female Hunters Posted: 7/18/2008 11:45:56 AM | | seems when something starts to go downhill, let women in ..........nascar,golf,dragracing,politics,human race etc. | |

Well it's certainly better than excluding them. After all, this is the 21st century, not the freaking dark ages.

| Female Hunters Posted: 7/18/2008 12:37:08 PM | | but in the beginning of the first century, after adam, eve was included cuz it was going downhill already, no? | |

Citing christian beliefs/stories/fables isn't going to help the statement you made. At least not with me.

To be honest, I was holding off on going on a rampage, hoping that in fact it was tongue in cheek. It would be a shame to know that in this day and age that there would be still so many chauvinists about...(male or female)
Although, I'm just noticing now that you put human race at the end of your first post. Tsk tsk. *shakes head*
|
| Female Hunters Posted: 7/18/2008 12:51:39 PM | | uhmm,...........adam comes along and shortly after eve is include too........the joke was that the human race was already going downhi...................forget it.............. | |

| Female Hunters Posted: 7/20/2008 5:14:41 PM | I have never hunted but my ex was a hunter (rifle, black powder, bow) and I have been along on hunting trips (ducks, geese) with my brothers when I was younger. I was never interested in the kill, but I have done my share of butchering deer in the past. My daughter has done target shooting and she's awesome at it but she's never wanted to kill an animal.....perhaps an ex boyfriend or two on occasion!!
I don't think it's a 'guy thing' at all, I do know women who have hunted and they seem to enjoy it. I agree with SmilingOne
If you're interested in something and want to try it, go for it and don't worry about what anyone else thinks.

| Female Hunters Posted: 8/16/2008 6:46:41 AM | | I introduced my girlfriend to firearms, target shooting and hunting and she loves it all.I'e dated several women in the past who enjoyed casual target shooting ,but not competition or hunting, but my girl loves it all.She competes in handgun and muzzleloading competitions with me and we go hunting as well. So far she hasn't killed anything bigger than a gopher, but she's looking forward to taking her 1st deer or bear. | |
