| | top 10 dive spots in the world...Page 1 of 2 (1, 2) | Okay, would love some input on what fellow divers think are the top 10 sites. My first dive ever was in the Cayman's but it was only a resort dive cert and we only went 25 feet and around a small wreck in as shallow water. I got fully certified in Maui and was a bit disappointed but not in hanging out with the turtles!! The last dive I did was last year in Fiji, at Benga Island Resort...wow. That has to be up there. I have heard Indonesia is great and also Belize...thoughts?

| top 10 dive spots in the world... Posted: 7/17/2008 6:57:11 PM | | Belize is one of the top 10 dive spots. The reef of Belize is 2nd in size to the "Great Barrier". I do have some underwater shots (snorkeling) in Belize. Email me if you want, I'll send you to my travel blog. | |

| top 10 dive spots in the world... Posted: 7/18/2008 4:08:04 PM | | I got my scube cert on the great barrier reef in Aus and it was amazing. Of course as a newbie diver anything would be. I also dove in Malaysia (Parhentian Islands), Thailand, and Vietnam. Backpackers I met all raved about Bali. Fiji also, but you already know that. Supposedly the Red Sea diving is excellent and can be accessed from Israel, Egypt or Jordan. | |

Bonaire is suppose to have great shore diving. My daughter and I just got our open water certification and will be going to Cozumel in August for our first dive vacation.

I recall an article in Skin Diver or SCUBA magazine last year listing an area just north of Whidby Island as a great place to dry suit dive. Top 10 in the world, if I remember the name of the article correctly. Something about giant octopi.
Late summer is probably a good time to try it.
I haven't been there myself, but I'm sure someone on these forums has more information about it.
Other than that, tropical baby.
There are great spots all over. It depends on what you want to do.
See whales or turtles? Macro-photography? Wreck dives? Spearfish?
What's your pleasure? It will help determine the answer.

I'll be going to Barbados over Labor Day - snorkeling over a ship wreck and swimming with the turtles. It seems that there are so many awesome places in the world, that it really depends on what you want to see.

| top 10 dive spots in the world... Posted: 8/9/2008 8:40:07 AM | I know IP, you are asking about the top 10 dive spots in the world but IMHO if you have a buddy who doesn't mind holding your hand under the surface, who keeps an eye on you too except the gauge ... and on the deck is as happy as lark in your company, well ... any location with such a buddy is a wonderful adventure and experience.
I would recommend Maldives or Phi-Phi island (Thailand).

| top 10 dive spots in the world... Posted: 8/10/2008 12:09:36 AM | I'd agree with Mr Right. The sudanese coast is almost untouched. The first time I dived it we were told thew loactions could not be dived before as people would have shot at us. Doesn't get much more pristine than that.
The OP might like to break this up into three threads. Coral diving, Recreational Wreck diving, and then technical including wrecks and caverns..

| top 10 dive spots in the world... Posted: 8/10/2008 9:04:46 AM | Pulau Sipadan in Malaysia was some of the best diving I experienced. I believe it's also considered one of the top 10 destinations... | |

| top 10 dive spots in the world... Posted: 8/10/2008 10:49:58 AM | | I've done a number of dives in Cozumel. For a long time it was considered one of the top three dive spots in the world. There's a lot of variety there. Also an underwater park that is teaming with fish of all kinds. Haven't been back in a while, but now that cruise lines go in there it's gotten a lot more touristy. Most of the dive fanatics started going to Belize. Cancun is cool, but mostly for getting blitzed in bars until 4 in the morning. Tends to limit your diving... | |

| top 10 dive spots in the world... Posted: 8/11/2008 6:13:03 PM | | I dove off the coast of Limassol, Cyprus. The chief of police of that city chartered out his private boat for diving as a 2nd career/hobby. The first two dives were to ocean going vessel wrecks. After we completed the two dives he navigated to the west end of the city where we snorkelled in about 15 feet of water at the remains of a submerged ancient city. While we snorkelled and swam off his boat he prepared lunch. He served a lemon chicken with fresh vegetables, fruits, and salads. At that point in time the wine came out as well and with that the diving, snorkelling, and swimming came to an end. The whole trip lasted about 6 hours and was one of the best things I have done. I don't believe the Mediterranean is one of the top ten but due to the extras with that dive it was an awesome experience. | |

| top 10 dive spots in the world... Posted: 8/28/2008 7:49:46 PM | | Only place I've been diving (for the moment, getting my open water done for PADI next weekend) was the Great Barrier Reef off of Cairns, and it was amazing. Incredible coral, eels, rays, sharks, turtles, tons of fish of all sorts, saw whales from the boat on the way out and back... and all kinds of variety to the dives. I only went on two during the day, but they also offered night dives and a lot more options for the certified folks. Can't recommend it enough. Many thumbs up. | |
