| August Long Weekend events Posted: 7/21/2008 12:58:42 PM | Hey people. I'm coming out for August Long Weekend and was wondering what sort of shenanigans are going on out there in Vancouver and area, as well as Victoria and on the island. Any POF events? Any cool events going on in the area that would be good to check out?
Thanks a bunch in advance. Lookin' forward to coming out there and having a great time.

I'm not coming out of the closet, that's for sure. I like girls too much to do that.
That said, I AM coming out there for a weekend vacation of sorts, and really just want to take in the sights. I saw a lot of people had wanted to delete this thread, so not feeling overly welcomed. I mean seriously folks, I want to know what is fun to do in your neck of the woods!

Depends on where you're staying. If you're closer to downtown there are lots of nightspots and restaurants to check out in the downtown core.
Granville Island is fun to check out too.

Huge event here, happens annually. Basically the Victoria Symphony gets all decked up and loaded on a barge in the inner harbour .. they play for about 2 hours then wrap the whole concert up with the 1812 overture complete with fireworks and cannons. Last year I remember they did the theme to Pirates of the Carribean plus a number of show tunes from Broadway musicals. This concert is "by donation" ( in other words free but there are donation barrels stategically placed around the harbour. Seating is by first come first serve on the legistalure lawn ( bring your own blanket/chair). During the afternoon and early evening there are a number of groups that entertain on a stage placed in front of the legistature steps and plenty of booths and buskers set up around the inner harbour walkway. My kids and I make it to this annual event downtown .. packing a picnic supper and bussing it downtown early afternoon and stay till the end ( normally around 10:30 wrap on the fireworks). Of course for those that don't like the crowds ( and it is packed down there for the event .. last year I think in access of 200K people were around at the end) it is all televised on the local TV channel! Seeing how this is BC's 150th Birthday there is alot more happening all around town that weekend.

| August Long Weekend events Posted: 7/21/2008 6:54:43 PM | The Celebration of Lights Finale will be on August 2nd at English Bay which is the long weekend in August. Awesome show! For more information about this event click on the URL http://www.celebration-of-light.com/ Theres also a POF event in Burnaby that weekend. (Check out the POF events in our area)
Like missbrattypants mentioned - it depends where you are staying. We wouldn't want to send you somewhere that would take hours to get to - you might get lost..., lol!
btw...Welcome to Vancouver in advance - hope you enjoy your visit:)

I'll definitely be checking out the Symphony in the Harbor event, without a doubt, and probably a few other fun things as well!

| August Long Weekend events Posted: 7/22/2008 7:32:12 AM | I highly recommend attending the Celebration of Light. It is a very popular event and people start arriving in the westend and Kitsilano areas very early to get a spot. This is the fourth evening and the finale so you should plan to be early and be prepared for delays leaving.
Remember anything you take in with you, please remove when you leave! Enjoy our beautiful city!
