OK, take a look at the picture and then read the article.

The rising cost of food means their money gets them about a third fewer bags of groceries — $100 used to buy about 12 bags of groceries, but now it's more like seven or eight. So they cut back on expensive items like meat, and they don't buy extras like ice cream anymore. Instead, they eat a lot of starches like potatoes and noodles.

That's a lot of 'taters and noodles.

OMG!!! I know the overweight is the last group it's supposedly safe to discriminate against but reading the story of those self-pitying whiners and then the picture...I know things are bad, heck, they're about 150 miles north of me, I'll send them a Mazda full of meat if we don't have to hear much more from them!!!

eeeo4u, I didnt see "self-pitying whiners" in that article.

but if you want to go down that road, why dont you include American farmers. Any idea what the clinical depression rate is and the number of suicides among them? Let's all have a big laugh at the dead farmers, too, now...huh?

I read an article about people who CANNOT find work and when they can, CANNOT get there because they dont have a car or public transportation.........

Good Golly! I would love to see the grocery list! You can purchase healthier options for the same prices if not less than unhealthy food, especially during the summer time when fruits and vegetables are cheap and plentiful. The more processed food is, the more it usually cost. I would also suggest clipping coupons, that can help out hugely.

I brought up the picture and for anyone to look the way these people do, they must be walking around all day looking like this

The thing that bothers me is that I did read the story that accompanied the picture and I got the impression that these women looked like this before they were forced to cut back on their groceries. Seriously, I shouldn't joke about the women and I do hope someone in the Health Care Industry helps them with a guide on healthy eating and weight loss.

My grandmother told me back in 1966 $100 worth of groceries would fill the back of their
1/2 ton truck. 1996 $20 would fill the car, Now it $40.
But then wages and prices were lower.

I don't think that the average wage has kept pace with the price increases...now if you include Britney Spears and George Clooney and A-Rod maybe the average wage has gone up but I'd love to see what, say an assistant manager at EZ Mart made ten years ago as opposed to what they make today.

Definitely, its not how much those two are eating, its WHAT they are eating. Their weight is concentrated in the middle, not the cleavage or face.

Those starches sure ain't helping any. They need not just exercise, but a change of diet, too. cut out the comfort food.

I think the OP's point was, these two aren't the best representative of starving people...did the photographer goof, or put his tongue firmly in cheek?

I think that it was a goof it was trying to gain sympathy it managed to gain contempt instead...and I'm sorry, if you can't work because you are clinically depressed find something to do that you enjoy and get out of it. Many previous generations did. May has been the day I didn't get out of bed but I just remembered what one of my commanding officers said, "You don't have to like it, you just have to do it!"

Ill get to the other stuff- but this ^^^^^^ is absolutely not true. Processed food is a lot cheaper.

As for the story... I have to think what these 2 actually consider walking distance. The truth of the matter is though, that the economy is not doing all to well. They have been living on assistance too long, but for many people there are not a lot of alternatives that make a lot of sense.
It just pisses me off that we have this government that blames people for being poor and then outsources the jobs and tells us that it is good.
I will say that these two appear to have made some bad choices a long the way. At least they did say that the daughter having a baby to get more money was not an option.

And the comments about depression, from a person that has battled it for way too many years.... depression is a very real thing, but there are ways out that you have to decide to take them. There is depression and then there is depression as an excuse. Wallowing in self pity for 17 years... now come on.

It is clear that this article was printed to create incitement against the overweight, being obvious to the meanest intellect that these people are in no position to discuss proper dietary habits.

Let's not jump into their silly manipulative journalistic game, shall we...!?

I disagree, but perhaps we have a different definition of healthy and processed. To me when I am thinking of healthy, I'm thinking of whole grains, fruits and vegetables, and chicken and or turkey, not much red meat. If you compare that to a diet of junk food, prepackaged meals, and foods that are not as filling nor as nourishing you might find that you can get by purchasing less. By preparing meals instead of heating meals, and perhaps purchasing staples in bulk, you'd see quite a savings as well. Quality vs. Quantity. Also, if you avoid the impulse buying that the grocery stores entice you with and stick to good wholesome choices, you should see it reflected in your budget. Or at least that has been my experience.

How about skip processed foods, starches and meat and give a 6-pack of Ultra Slim-Fast a shot?

Most processed food is not cheaper, just faster and easier to buy, just like fast foods. People have become lazy; they don't want to take the time to buy fresh vegetables and fruits and then go home and prepare/cook a meal. I know where I live in Vancouver and a market just about right outside my door, I can buy fresh fruit and vegetables, and I love to cook to boot. Whereas I know people who buy a lot of processed goods and their grocery bill is much much higher than mine, and they are not as healthy. I grew up poor and know how to make a dollar last.
