well, you got 4 spaces, who belongs there? let's try to limit this to presidents only. we could make great arguments for people other than presidents who belong there, but this is for the presidents. give me the 4 presidents who belong there and why. hope this isn't viewed as a "list thread." re-carve mount rushmore for me.

For the past 20 years, there's been a push to put Ronald Reagan's face on there.

I like the ones that are on there already. In about another 8 years, hopefully I will say let's add Obama! :)

Other than that, maybe JFK.

Oh recarve? Sheesh man, then we'd have to take someone off. That's a toughie. No, there's more rock there. We're adding. And we're adding JFK because he was very forward thinking and fair minded and (for one thing) resolved the cuban missle crisis, which could have resulted in nuclear war, very smartly. That's all I got. You know I'm not an historian, I'm going with general tone here. :)

To the post below me, whose I key seems to be stuck....

I don't really have any complaints about the current set.

FDR is probably the biggest name not on there.

I'm good with the four that are there for a more 'historical' set, even though Teddy was indeed within the past century. Often times people wonder if Teddy deserves to be there with Washington, Jefferson and Lincoln....but in consideration of his military performance before being president, the whole Bull-Moose Party, and what he did for preserving our country with National Parks - what foresight! He should be there.

But if we were to dedicate a mountain to the four from the more modern era, hold on to your seats (!), I'd HAVE to say FDR and Truman (I hope those are obvious for reasons why) and also, here's where I'm going to take flack, Nixon and the Reagan. Reagan should also be obvious. Nixon however....go back to before Watergate and look at what he inherited at the start of 1969 from his predecessor; human rights and demonstrations beyond any before short of war (he worked through that and brought relationships back together), Vietnam (we were virtually out by the end of his tenure), unstable dollar (had what it took to take us off the gold standard), middle east crisis (peace in the middle east via Henry Kissinger), the cold war (prior soviet posture and trends of advancements stopped and US technological superiority regained), and best of all, an appearance on Laugh-In to lighten it all. Now before you throw that all away on Watergate, do some research and find out what he really did there (no, he did not authorize or endorse it before the fact contrary to popular belief. His 'sin' was that he tried to stay behind those that turned out to be guilty, unlike Kennedy who fired his comparable folks to get away from them as soon as it looked like he might even take any heat), and then suggest another more deserving.

Note: it was pointed out above that JFK really in fact didn't do much except basically 'look good' (and he's the one who put us in Vietnam anyway), and certainly LBJ wouldn't be endorsed...that leaves Ike (highways, cold war, but during prosperous times), Ford (unfortunately not enough tenure to really show his wisdom), Carter (helicopters in the desert, 'big show' being boycotting Moscow Olympics), Clinton (oh, I'd like to see which pose he'd be put in for our kids to see...not to mention, what did he really do anyway?), and of course Bush Sr and Jr (I'm sure both are nice guys, but neither moved mountains). Yep: FDR, Truman, Nixon, Mr. Reagan.

Franklin Roosevelt is the last president to really have the impact on American society comparable to the 4 already there.

Reagan was a walking hood ornament, a washed up actor completely out of touch with the world. Making America feel good about itself is total baloney. The Soviet Union collapsed of it's own weight and inefficiency, very little of it had to do with Ronald Reagan. After that, what have you got ? He sold weapons to Iran in exchange for hostages. He fired the air traffic controllers and they named an airport after him.

Kennedy, maby for sentimental reasons, but no real accomplishments.
Johnson will always be cursed for Viet Nam.

This is an interesting question. There have been a lot of good presidents and a lot of worthy presidents for Mount Rushmore. My picks would be as follows:

George Washington: This guy is an easy choice. Led the colonies through the Revolutionary War to establish country and was the first president. one of the presidents who has been more influential in our country history then many others.

Abraham Lincoln: Took a divided country and brought it back together. In what I consider to be one of the most important time in the history of our country, he came through and shined like no other and reunited the country.

Franklin Delanor Roosevelt: Brought us through the Great Depression and was on the verge of winning World War II. While I don't necessarily agree with a lot of his policies and programs, one can not deny the huge mark he left in the history of this country.

The fourth one is really debatable and hard to choose. These three are the most relevant and most influential in our country in my opinion. I think the last has to be a toss up between John Adams, JFK, and Ronald Reagan. I can't really think of any that really belong on that level at this point.

^ ^ ^ ^ Apparently it's necessary to mention which Presidents currently ARE on Mt. Rushmore. They are Washington, Jefferson, T. Roosevelt and Lincoln.

Personally, I like the current set and don't think we should add to it at all.

If we want to honor other Presidents, let's do it at another memorial.

Reagan in stone?
now that would be a great reason NOT to want to see Mt Rushmore-

we don't need another face up there
money would be better spent fighting AIDS or helping people keep or get a home

If one were to compare the conditions of our country and the world between Jan 1981 and Jan 1989, one would see a huge contrast. In 1981 we had: American hostages in Iran, broken helicopters in the desert with a failing military and defense system overall, interest rates not under control, unemployment, a bench lacking consistency, general loss of faith in our presence and direction by our friends of other long time allied governments, the Soviets unchallenged and showing no weaknesses at that point, and an overall malaise of our people without direction or hope. Whereas by 1987: The hostages had been returned (heck, that happened during the swearing in!), a rebuilt military and defense strength, reasonable interest rates through great work with the Fed, unemployment at its lowest levels ever and with fantastic prosperity reaching people at all class levels that cared to participate, a better although still not perfect bench, faith restored in us by our long time allies, the Soviet empire pressured into disarray to a point that it would indeed have to crumble under its own weight but which would not have come about without a firm 'push', the people had a new and great spirit in America and again there was faith in the White House too. I'd be certain to have that president's image installed.

I'd be certain to have that president's image installed.

We also had the stock market crash of 1987 (1500 points), Reagan had given biochems to Iraq, satellite technology to China (which they used to build ICBMs with), the dollar was so cheap that most American males couldn't afford leather shoes anymore, so everyone was wearing sneakers (leather shoes were up around $100 plus... even for the bad ones!), we had tripled the national debt (EVERY SINGLE ONE OF REAGAN'S BUDGETS WAS A DEFICIT! [Yearly federal budget exceeded the tax revenue{Is this what you call "great work with the fed?}]), an "official" recession in 1982 (Actually, if you subtract the deficits in Reagan's budgets from our GDP for every year he was in office, there was NEVER A YEAR THAT WAS MORE THAN 2.5% GROWTH!) and in fact, about six years we were in "net recessions" where the amount borrowed by the federal government was actually greater than our economic growth!
I'd put WC Fields up on Mt. Rushmore rather than Reagans... at least his wife didn't act for him!
For you "tax cutters" out there... the national debt was less than 1 trillion dollars under Carter... but since Reagan took office, it's now more than 9 trillion. All but 1.6 trillion of the 8 trillion difference was spent by Reagan, Bush I and Bush II... which is why now, we pay between $.16 and $.18 of every $1.00 for nothing but interest.
MYGAWD!!!! You guys criticize Carter because the bank interest rates were that high in ONE YEAR!!!
Now, we all pay it... every year...
Some president Reagan was...

Washington, Jefferson, Nixon (I love Nixon) and the best president this country has ever had, James Garfield. Why was he the best? Cuz the cuss only served 4 months before he was shot

I don't know about you Stranger, but I bought several pairs of leather shoes back then, and I was just a kid out of school at the time too that could afford it. So does the President control the stock market and cause it to crash? Recession of 1982 was a direct hold-over from the state of things as he inherited them less than 2 years before, it didn't last long and by two years later, Americans were being more prosperous than they had ever been before (also even dragging along other country economies with them such as Japan, Korea, parts of Europe who also were enriched with the American prosperity). As for the deficite, yep, he couldn't stop the Democrats from all their spending on welfare programs..... and at least Reagan's expansions paid people to actually DO things!

Oh.... I forgot the 1/2 to 1 trillion dollars that leaked out of the US treasury because of Reagan's disastrous over-deregulation of the savings and loans...
And....Democrats spending?
Here's the senate majority the republicans had each and every one of the years Reagan was in office:

97th Congress (1981-1983)

Majority Party: Republican (53 seats)

Minority Party: Democrat (46 seats)

Other Parties: 1 Independent

Total Seats: 100

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

98th Congress (1983-1985)

Majority Party: Republican (54 seats)

Minority Party: Democrat (46 seats)

Other Parties: 0

Total Seats: 100

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

99th Congress (1985-1987)

Majority Party: Republican (53 seats)

Minority Party: Democrat (47 seats)

Other Parties: 0

Total Seats: 100

Oh you're right, what am I saying? Of course the Republicans had total and complete control to do whatever they wanted, and the Democrats had absolutely no control of anything at all.......the Republicans were totally free to overturn (on a dime!) any social program that had been started in the previous Congresses and Presidential terms, and they failed to do that. So ALL spending and overuns were Reagan's direct fault. Of course!

Reagan deserves a spot for bringing about a peaceful end to the Cold War and putting America back on its feet. JFK could get his face up there any day on pure popularity -- this is a tourist attraction, so you want someone up there who's going to pull people in. Elvis, as the King of Rock and Roll, wouldn't be a bad choice either.

Oh wellllll...
If the president has to sign a budget in order for it to become law... the before that, the senate (in which the republicans had a majority) had to approve it... in order for it to get to HIM...and the democrats only had a majority in the house...

Then how can you blame the dem0crats for budgets which are continually way more than the tax revenues?
Hey... nobody's gonna change your mind or mine... but I just thought you might want to know.
