12:30a.m. here in Whitby, and yet another thunderstorm.

Who likes them? hates them? afraid of them? do your pets like them? do you get an adrenaline rush, and jump into your car like I do sometimes and drive to the center of where the storm is going? especially at night?

Have you gone camping and a storm approaches? while you are sleeping? Have you played golf when a storm is approaching? how does it make you feel? Have you ever felt static (your hair suddenly begins to stand up), does that make you nervous? a target for lightning?

Don't you just love thunderstorms?

I love them - The sight - the sound - all of it! My parents were great at making me unaffraid when I was younger. We are respectful that it's dangerous - so I watch from inside where I am safe! I loved it up at the cottage the best - echos through the lakes!

I have never been afraid of thunderstorms. As Leeanne has already said, the sight, the sound...the smell of the air, the energy, all excite me somehow and cause me to stop what I am doing and watch the show!

The only time it might startle me is when the thunder is right overhead during the night, but once I realize the source of the noise I go back into a peaceful sleep.

One of my favourite memories of my childhood is of a family vacation in a cottage at Honey Harbour. With the exception of an hour or two every day, the weather was wet and wild. The rain came down in torrents, with lots of thunder and lightning. We had brought lots of games and books, so we kept ourselves entertained and, miraculously, other than a few minor squabbles, we all got along. That is a miracle in itself...6 people in a tiny two bedroom cottage...and no one went to bed angry.

I like 'em. Nature's sound & light show. Can't beat it.

Best observed from a really tall tree and use a piece of sheet metal to keep yourself dry.....no don't do that.

When I was a child, I was terrified of thunderstorms. I would run screaming to a dark place so I would not see the flashes of lightening. I heard too many "Old Wives Tales" about bolts coming into the house, or someone getting zapped while talking on the phone. When a storm was brewing, we had to go around the house and unplug anything that was plugged in and we were forbidden to answer the phone if it rang during a storm.
As I became older, I still shivered a bit when it thunderboomed, but after living in Winnipeg for four years, I got over my fear of storms ...PDQ. Storms there can sometimes go on for hours on end, so unless you wanted to become agoraphobic and cease all outside life, you bit the bullet and got on with day to day things while a storm smashed around you.
When I started to persue photography seriously, I would drive to the country during a storm and try to photograph lightening. I had a few successes in capturing streaks of light.
I tried it again, just over a week ago.....unfortunately, because I was on a dark country road, everytime I was about to open the camera shutter, some do-gooder would stop and see if I need assistance or passing traffic would ruin the scene with their headlights. I hope that before the summer is over and Lightening season is past, I get to find a DARK sideroad and get that exciting snap!

I do not like thunderstorms, because of damage I have seen.
A friend stood in his livingroom window and watched his barn explode from lightning.
About 5 years ago, a friend stayed back from a horseshow she always participates in, and found out that one of the women, riding in her division, had been struck and killed by lightning while riding her horse. It was one of those odd storms where you get a flash of lightning before you know there is a storm.
Another friend lost several cattle that were standing under a tree in the field during a storm.
Thanks, but, not thanks.

Yup!! Turn on for me too!

The intensity, the not knowing when the next flash will happen.... so thrilling! My kids and I run around and turn off all the lights so we can enjoy the show.

Hate to rub it in Sens fan.... but we have a metal roof and it's awesome!! I enjoy it even more if we're camping.... nothin' like hunkering down in the tent listening to the rain and the thunder and watching the flashes of lightning! Woohoo!!!!!!

I like thunderstorms--nothing bothers me about them. I used to have a friend that would go & hide in her basement as soon as one started. She would unplug everything and not answer her phone. I'm still convinced that she was making a mountain out of a mole hill.

Nothing like a good thunderstorm and someone to cuddle up and watch it with.

I've always been impressed with the power and rage of lighting and thunder. I was fortunate enough to live in a high rise apt from where I could watch the awesome spectacle of these storms.... it's indescribable.

I was also lucky enough to see some of the most gorgeous sunsets following these ominous storms passing through in the evening.... I'd sit on my balcony admiring the view.

LOL Yeah I do the same. Stick my face in the window and admire the beauty of it :)
Someday I'll be the owner of my very own tin roof :D

I'm living exactly what you've mentioned. I live on the 7th floor of a 10 storie building overlooking the Ottawa River. I see about 3-4 km of river along with an awsome view of the city of Ottawa and the sunsets and thunderstorms that I see are just spectacular.

I love thunderstorms and lightening, thrilling! What I love most about them is that sometimes after all of the fury of the sky you are able to witness mother nature calming down the earth with a rainbow... if you are lucky... :)

Used to be scared of them as a kid, always hid under the blankets for hours until I was sure it was safe to come out...

But then nobody bothered to tell me why these things happened, if I had have been told I may not have been afraid.

Now I enjoy driving through it all, couple of weeks ago driving back from Toronto, heading west the sky was really really black and I thought oh goody this will be interesting!

Almost wished I had a video camera to capture it all, the huge bolts of lightning were just freaky.

Thunder storms and internet don't mix! When there's a thunderstorm I unplug my computer and modem and do something else. I don't want my computer or modem fried.

I guess I'm a good ole mid-west boy that LOVES a good thunderstorm. Sit on the porch with some bourbon and a cigar and enjoy the show, stand out in a downpour until soaked "to the bone", throw down a big blanket in the hay loft and have steaming hot sex...so many great ways to enjoy a good boomer.

I hate them. I've learned to cope better as I've aged but they still scare me. Up until about the age of 30 I would close all the curtains and lock the doors. Hide in the basement. I remember listening to the radio during one particularly bad one waiting for them to tell me it was safe to go back upstairs. Think I waited about 2 hours before I realized they weren't interested. lol Now I just jump when it thunders, cringe when it's lightening. Calm my son's dog. People who go outside during this make me crazy. I'm always screaming "Get inside, you're going to get killed." Then I run back inside because after they've been warned it's every man for himself.

Absolutely love watching the power of nature unleash itself. Living on the shore of Lake Erie affords some fantastic opportunities to do so. I'm known to pull up a chair and just watch, completely spell-bound.

I have always been fascinated by thunderstorms and displays of what my dad use to call "dry lightning." which I later learned were storms high up in the atmosphere and so far away that the sound of the thunder woul not reach an observer. I have, when I was much younger, seen a 20 ft tall tree explode and be reduced to a smoldering stump by a lightning bolt. The sonic wave created made the windows rattle. It was an amazing thing to see.

That is the big reason I like to go out walking in a thunderstorm. People tell me that I am crazy and that I will be hit by lightning. Actually, if you know what you are doing and stay away from tall trees or other lone high points like the top of a hill, the greatest danger is the wind. I have had rain come at me almost horizontally, almost been blown off my feet and had to dodge flying debris. All this wearing just shorts. I'd like to try it in a kilt.

Maybe I am crazy, but knowing what the risks are helps to reduce them and, anyway, nobody lives forever.

I love thunderstorms. I love walking in the torential downpours and listening to the sound of thunder as well as watching the lightening light up the sky. Is there anything better?
