| Movies: The Good, The Bad, and the Worth Watching! Posted: 7/23/2008 3:12:03 AM | I am not one to watch movies a lot. But part of that is that most of them in the era leave me flat. That is, wanting more than they have to offer. I don't terribly often walk out of a theater feeling I got my money's worth. I have a theory that just maybe Hollywood is running out of unique ideas. While I am not a big fan of older movies, I do find their themes and content to often be quite a bit more creative and distinct.
However I saw one this evening that was truly exceptional, which I had never heard of before. This was on Encore Cable and it is showing now. Highly recommended! Kind of rare these days.
It was called "Mad City" with Dustin Hoffman and John Travolta. Very intense and exceptionally well done. Also very very true to life. It hits hard. If you get a chance, this is definitely one to catch.
Mad City! This one is worth 4 dancing bananas!

| Movies: The Good, The Bad, and the Worth Watching! Posted: 7/23/2008 8:26:47 AM | One movie that I saw recently was MONGOL. It is the story of the early life and beginning of the reign of Ghengis Kahn.
It was a really good movie with historical value. It is beautifully done, with good acting and a beautiful setting.
I highly reccommend this moive to all. And I hope it won't be overlooked in favor of some of the pop culture ones that are now in theatres.
I must warn you however, that it is in the Mongol languaged, and therefoare subtitled, but I hope this won't stop you from seeing it.

| Movies: The Good, The Bad, and the Worth Watching! Posted: 7/23/2008 8:38:36 AM | Great post, and review kind sir. I will most definitely check it out. It seems I am happy these days if 10 % of the movies released from the money train, called Hollywood, are worth watching. In this modern day of special effects and sexy men and women, it seems that Hollywood forgot to actually focus on a good script. A few movies that I will say were worth watching for 2008, are the following:
No country for old men (remake) There will be blood The mist
There are a few others, but if you read the books, you would be very disappointed in the movie, as usually is the case.

| Movies: The Good, The Bad, and the Worth Watching! Posted: 7/24/2008 6:41:48 AM | That sounds like one I'd really like to catch too.. I've heard about it several times but have always missed it so far. Mental note taken.
Actually a few of those sound like good possibilities.
A sleeper from a few years ago that I have watched a few times and is among my all-time favorites is "Grand Canyon". I love the stuff that tells it like life really is. "Mad City" from Post #1, was like that too.
"Grand Canyon" is about typical life in L.A. with some very realistic drama and intrigue as it applies to the semi-yuppy set. But not at all soapy. That one remains a favorite of mine. It has a lot to say about life and human beings and some great acting. Another I thoroughly enjoyed was a comedy called "Dave", about a substitute president. It was hilarious, but relatively realistic too! I was going to tell you the ending, but I thought better of it.

Heck of a lot of remakes out there now...nobody seems to be doing much "original" work. Same old stories with a modern twist usually. Like Oceans 11 or most any movie they bring out today...it's all been done before!

| Movies: The Good, The Bad, and the Worth Watching! Posted: 7/31/2008 8:12:17 PM | | just watched the new x-files movie the other night.the one called 'i want to believe'.wow what a dissapointment i found.it was like as if they would have made an x-file movie out of one of the bad episodes on the tv show.they shouldnt have released the movie in the summer season cause its far from a popcorn movie.the first film was exciting and moved along well and was spectacular enough to make it a summer movie.this one is pretty much a bore considering this is a movie that we have been waiting for about a few years since the last one. | |

| Movies: The Good, The Bad, and the Worth Watching! Posted: 8/6/2008 1:24:55 AM | One I forgot to mention before that I thought was very good was
"Falling Down" with Michael Douglas
It is another one about the trials and tribulations of living in a place like L.A. Lots of drama and a very interesting theme. An "average guy" succumbs to the pressures of life and his job, as well as a broken marriage, in a very typical large urban environment setting. Very enjoyable and quite realistic.
For light-hearted movies I really enjoyed "Ice Age". Which has a sequel I haven't seen yet. And "Cars" was pretty good too, only I think they probably could have taken it in some other directions for a more meaningful script. There were a lot of options and a sequel could easily be put together I suspect. I kind of hope they do that. The animators/artists in both cases were exceptional.
Oh.. I actually enjoyed "Water World" of Costner's. Even though it was a huge bomb. Because the concept was very unusual and creative. However with Global Warming, who knows? Some parts were a little silly, but still definitely worth a watch.
