Gender-based condiments?

There are a few very male-centric condiments, such as worcestershire sauce, hot sauce, and more than one kind of mustard. You'll find these items in *most* single guys' fridges, and you won't find them in *most* single women's fridges.

I'm curious as to whether there are female-centric condiments?

Are there things we guys just don't stock our fridges with?

I cooked at my guy's apartment last weekend, and he had no spices. I don't use a lot, but have my basics....italian seasoning, garlic powder, onion powder, etc.

Most men I have ever met do not have mayo. And if they do, they use that nasty no name cheap stuff. I am very picky about my mayo and only eat one kind. So if we are long term, I will start bringing my own stuff to leave in his fridge or cabinets to have on hand when I am there.

I'm a vegetarian so I don't use various condiments to cover the taste of animal flesh. However, I keep ketchup for my fries....and occassionally I have a garden burger with a little mustard and ketchup.....but that's all i keep in my fridge

is salsa considered a condiment? I love salsa...and yea i have all the basic spices.

My ex bf loved ketchup, he even put it on pizza...gross gross. I kept even more of it in the fridge when he was around.

LOL I'm not a vegetarian, but I thought that quote was hilarious!
I think I'm pretty much the same, ketchup, mayo, seasonings are a must for meats....

Well it's true. Humans as carnivores...well we use everything to cover up the taste of flesh. I know when I ate meat I used to drown my steak in A1 sauce...and my chicken in ketchup...so i think i knew even then I didn't really like the taste of it.

I have all of those! *lol*

I don't think it's gender-based...it's likely based on culinary skill or spice interest. If I go to one girlfriend's apartment, she has zilch in the spice/condiment department. Tuna Helper is a food group with her. Yet I have so many spices (thank you internet!) I can't name them all.

If I have to pick something, I guess it would be ketchup. Doesn't everyone have ketchup though? *lol*

Honestly, I think it just comes down to if the person cooks or not. I have worcestershire sauce for steak marinades, hot sauce for homemade buffalo wings and Grey Poupon country style to make my sauce for spinach souffle stuffed chicken breasts. I'm not even close to being a boy, and yes I know you used the "most" disclaimer. It still doesn't seem gender based though.

my favorite gender-based condiment is marshmallow creme.
particularly in large, gooey spoonfuls right out of the microwave

I don't eat salt, but use a lot of fresh-ground pepper. The condiments or spices I use most often are: basil, oregano, deli mustard, hot sauce - various kinds, chili powder, salsa, cinnamon, garlic, and ginger. A former boyfriend introduced me to the use of cinnamon in omelets and even mixed it with steak spice.

bbw/vegeterian.........odd combination

Not at all. It's a common myth that vegetarians are pasty white and look like they stumbled out of Auschwitz. Depending on if you are ovo-lacto, vegetarian, or vegan -- you still can eat just about everything everyone else eats. You're just not eating meat.

Ah, well it's not growth hormones that make you fat. It's eating a lot of cookies, cake, ice cream, fast food - and then not exercising at all. Just because you're a vegetarian doesn't mean you can't stuff yourself and lay around (I am NOT talking about the OP because I don't think she is BBW and obviously she does exercise).

Besides, remember the Atkins diet - mostly meat? People were losing weight like crazy on that.

It has nothing to do with gender (or vegetarianism -- heheh). I keep organic ketchup in my fridge, mostly for the occasional soy dog or tofu sandwich, for sweet potato fries, or to rehydrate TVP. I keep Dijon and old-fashioned coarsely-ground mustard in the fridge all the time for sandwiches or to use as dip. I use hot sauce in everything from rice to stir-fry. Of course, I also keep stuff like curry paste, fermented black bean & garlic sauce, soy-based "mayo". By definition, a condiment can be anything used to flavour food, including relishes, vinegars or spices. I have everything from balsamic to rice wine vinegar on hand and a wide variety of whole or powdered spices in my cupboard.

I am American. I don't like a lot of the typical America condiments like mayo/Miracle Whip, mustard and ketchup. I have none of these in my refrigerator. I do like salsa; I have both a green (tomatillo) and a red (tomato) salsa. I also like sweet/spicy sauces like mango chutney. I also keep pesto sauce on hand. I usually have some sriracha (Thai hot sauce).

I find Tabasco and many other hot sauces too vinegary. I also don't care for most bottled salad dressings. I am more likely to add freshly grated cheese or spices to my dishes.

Ut oh. I have Worcestershire sauce, HOT sauce, 2 different mustards that AREN'T the basic yellow mustard, horseradish, and about 3 different kinds of A1 sauces... I guess if you won't find them in *most* single women's fridges, you might want to have a chat with mine, as it must be confused...

I couldn't tell you if there are female-condiments out there, I just know the type of foods I eat, like, and eat on a regular basis.

My most prised condiment, is some "Dave's Insanity Sauce"... Dang that stuff's good!

So it does strike me as odd to be conscious healthy eater and overweight.

Yeah, that's a common misconception. Most overweight people I've met were healthy eaters, they just ate too much. That and they tended to eat whenever they were emotional.

"Let's celebrate!" (happy): Let's Eat!
"He broke up with me!" (depressed): I need to eat something to make me feel better.
"My boss sucks!" (anger): I deserve this cake dammit...I've had a hard week.
"I'm bored. Let's eat mindlessly while watching a movie." (boredom): It doesn't count if I don't look at it.

If your answer to feeling an emotion is to eat, you're going to get big pretty easily. I was a vegetarian for 10 years, never ate cookies/cakes/chocolate (still can't eat those things really), and was obese. Always boils down to eating more than your body needs.

I work with a guy who is 5'9"ish and 300lbs. He's fairly healthy for what his weight, Coca Cola is his weakness...that and he loves food <--on a side note, I can and probably do eat more than him on a regular basis, I'm blessed with a metabolism that is very forgiving.

OT : The only reason I have spices is because I inherited them from my ex when she moved away. I don't even know what they are nor what to use them for. I'll admit I'm not a very creative nor ambitious cook now a days - I could spend an hour + making some fancy supper for two small children who won't eat it, or 20 mins or less making something they'll eat.

Most men don't have Ranch dressing ,because it isn't considered a condiment . I eat ranch dressing on my baked potato , french fries , chicken strips , and omelettes .

Aside from most of the stuff previously mentioned I also always have lemon pepper spice, Montreal steak spice, HP sauce, concentrated lemon juice and Ketjap... it's a soy sauce, but not too salty and a little sweet.

Oh, and Sambal Oelek... it's a Dutch condiment... VERY spicy and not vinegary at all.... I use it on/in everything from scrambled eggs to rice to pasta to veggies.

Wow...I can't even think of listing all the ones I have...I have 2 refrig door shelves and one inside shelf that are primarily condiments...11 mustards including home-made, all the basics, 3 mayos, various rubs and other stuff, and then about half a shelf in the panty with stuff waiting to make it into use.

I have:

2 kinds of mustard
1 jar of relish
1 jar of saurkraut
1 bottle of red hot
1 bottle of shiriachi (chili sauce)
various Asian soy blends
1 bottle of worsteshire
2 jars of mayo: one light and one wasabi flavored

uh...and much more.

I don't think you can genderize condiments. I think the most you can tell is whether or not someone likes to cook or eat. :)

OP-Most guys I know don't have mayo. Sometimes not even Ranch. I've asked some of them why and they said it reminds them of cum.
