Horror on Canadian bus as man beheaded....[Thread Closed]

I saw this on Yahoo news. It's right out of a horror movie. A senseless brutal murder:

WINNIPEG, Manitoba (Reuters) - A man sleeping on a Greyhound bus as it rolled across the Canadian Prairies was killed and decapitated by his seatmate as horrified passengers fled to safety in the night, witnesses and police said on Thursday.

"All of a sudden, we all heard this scream, this bloodcurdling scream," said Garnet Caton, who was sitting just in front of the victim on the bus. Caton said that when the attack was over, the knife-wielding killer displayed his victim's severed head to the onlookers.

A 40-year-old man was taken into custody at the scene on Wednesday evening on a desolate stretch of the TransCanada Highway about 20 kilometers (12 miles) from Portage la Prairie, Manitoba, but has not been charged, according to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police.

Police declined to speculate on what prompted the attack, and witnesses said the victim and killer, who apparently did not know each other, had enjoyed a casual cigarette break with other passengers only minutes before the attack.

Witnesses described a scene of bloody mayhem that erupted without warning on the bus, which was traveling east to Winnipeg, Manitoba, on a routine scheduled run.

"The attacker was standing up right over top of the guy with a large hunting knife -- a survival, Rambo knife -- holding the guy and continually stabbing him, stabbing him, stabbing him in the chest area," Caton told CBC Television.

The attack continued as other passengers fled the bus and waited for police, Caton said. He said he, the driver and another passenger desperately tried to hold the bus door closed to prevent the attacker from leaving.

"He calmly walks up to the front (of the bus) with the head in his hand and the knife and just calmly stares at us and drops the head right in front of us," Caton said.

"There was no rage in him ... It was just like he was a robot or something."

Police praised the calmness and cooperation of the passengers, who were taken to a hotel in Brandon, Manitoba, and were being given crisis counseling and other assistance by authorities and Greyhound.

"Believe me, if we could do our jobs without having you relive this terrible experience we would," RCMP staff Sargent Steve Colwell said in a statement to the passengers that was read to reporters in Winnipeg.

Passengers said they were having difficulty coping.

"I tried to get to lay down at 4 o'clock this morning but was up 10 minutes later because every time I closed my eyes I'd see this man in the window with some guy's head I had just smoked a cigarette with," Cody Omstead told CTV News.

Greyhound said in a statement that it was cooperating with police to determine what happened. It said that intercity bus travel remained the safest mode of transportation in the country

When I read this, I got shivers.

I'm waiting to hear more about this and what went on inside the killers head and why he did this? I can't even begin to wonder how anyone could do something like this. It's horrifying!

This was definitely the talk around our newsroom today! Unbelievable is an understatement here! I can not imagine what horror those passengers went through!

As for a gun, if you were on a moving bus packed full of innocent passengers, you better have a damn good shot!

How on earth can you call the people in Canada a bunch of cowards based on this tragedy!?!

personally I always loved a little head on the bus.

an expanded piece.

Canwest News Service
RCMP investigate a stabbing on board a east bound Grey Hound bus .
The stabbing occurred on the bus 18 km west of Portage la Prairie Wed night.
The Greyhound bus left Edmonton at one minute past midnight on Wednesday morning, bound for a destination located two provinces, 20 hours and more than 1,300 kilometres away. More than 30 passengers were aboard Route 1628 including a pair of French tourists, a six year-old boy, and an elderly woman with her daughter.

Among them was an aboriginal man in his early twenties, listening to headphones and headed home to Winnipeg.

Through the day and into the evening, the bus pushed along the Trans-Canada -- through Lloydminister, Saskatoon and Gilbert Plains - as passengers read books, listened to music and watched TV. Somewhere around Brandon, nearly 18 hours into the trip, a new passenger boarded the bus. He was bald, aged about 40, wearing sunglasses, approximately six feet tall and 200 pounds. Witnesses say he stowed his luggage and sat at the front of the bus without speaking to anyone.

About a half hour later, the bus stopped for a smoke break. The bald man stepped off for a cigarette and reportedly chatted calmly with a female passenger.

When the bald man returned to the bus, he moved to the back, tossed his bags in an overhead bin and sat down beside the aboriginal man with the headphones, who had fallen asleep with his head against the window. Passengers say the two men never spoke to one another.

Twenty minutes later, at roughly 8:30 p.m. central time, and as some of the passengers watched the movie Zorro, there was a noise that some described as a terrible "yowl." Others said it was a "blood-curdling scream."

Garnet Caton, who was sitting directly in front of the victim, told reporters he initially thought a fist fight had broken out. "Arms were flailing and stuff like that, but then I saw the guy had a knife - a big frickin' Rambo knife, a hunting knife and it was covered in blood," Mr. Caton told the CBC.

"Everybody else started screaming," an elderly woman said. "They had terror in their eyes."

Mr. Caton ran to the front of the bus and screamed at the driver to stop. The bus pulled to the side of the highway about 20 kilometres east of Portage la Prairie. Some passengers needed to be roused from sleep or shock, but within seconds they were all on their feet and pushing towards the front, knocking one woman over as they fled the attacker, who stabbed his victim in the chest, neck, arms, legs and stomach.

Witnesses say the man stabbed his victim between 40 and 50 times before he was done.

Passengers stumbled from the bus into the prairie evening that offered little shelter. "There was nowhere to go," a passenger told reporters.

"Some people were puking, some people were crying, other people were in shock . . . everybody was running, screaming off the bus," Mr. Caton said.

The crowd eventually huddled outside at the tail of the bus. Mr. Caton, the bus driver and a truck driver who had seen the commotion returned to the bus to survey the scene, armed with a crowbar and hammer from the trucker's vehicle.

The trio saw the attacker on top of his victim, clearly working to remove the man's head and "gutting him like an animal," according to Mr. Caton.

Within moments, the bald man noticed the three men watching him and started to move towards the front of the bus. The three men fled, closing the door just as the man reached them. Mr. Caton held the door shut while the driver attempted to use a control panel to close it and the man slashed at them through a remaining crack. "We were telling him, 'Stay put, stay put, stay there, don't try to come out," Mr. Caton said.

But with one strong heave, the man pushed the door open, forcing Mr. Caton and the two others to flee behind the bus. They then worked their way around the far side, glancing underneath to see if they could spot the attacker's feet on the other side.

Determining the attacker was back on the bus, the men ran and pushed the door closed, then sat there to hold it shut. The bald man made several attempts to open the door and then moved to the driver's seat, where he seemed to attempt to start the vehicle. Somehow, the driver managed to disable the vehicle.

While the attacked was now trapped on the bus and unable to flee, he was not done taunting his fellow passengers. He returned to the back of the bus where his victim's body was located. "He came very calmly towards us with the knife in one hand, the head in the other," Mr. Caton said. "The three of us were just standing there in shock and he just calmly looked at us with sunglasses on and dropped the head in front of us like it was no big deal."

In a separate interview with the Winnipeg Free Press, Mr. Caton said: "When we saw the head, we knew he was dead."

Police arrived at the bus about 10 minutes after the incident began, according to witnesses. The attacker mocked police as they closed the highway in both directions and surrounded the bus. RCMP officers led the passengers on to school buses where they waited for the standoff to end. From their seats, they could see the attacker dangling his victim's head from his hand. "He picked the head up, looked at the cops, dropped the head and walked back to the body," Cody Olmstead, who was seated three seats in front of the incident, told the Free Press.

"When attempts were made to have him exit and surrender to police were unsuccessful, additional resources including the RCMP emergency response team and negotiator team were called in to assist," Staff Sergeant Steve Colwell told a press conference yesterday afternoon.

At 1:30 a.m. - three hours after the stand-off began and more than a day since the Greyhound first left Edmonton - the man attempted to flee the bus by jumping from a broken window. He was quickly arrested but had not been interviewed or charged by late yesterday afternoon, Staff Sgt. Colwell said.

Meanwhile, the passengers were taken to Brandon to be interviewed by police and spend the night in a hotel. Eighteen hours later, most were back on the road, headed the places they were headed before everything occurred. "Every time I closed my eyes I'd see this man in the window with some guy's head I had just smoked a cigarette with," Mr. Olmstead told reporters.

Well,,, Where are all the people who think we don't need a gun for self protection??

I'll bet they will go out and buy themselves a gun even if it is against the law there.

It seems the people in Canada are a bunch of cowards and run when someone needs help..

here's one,....I don't think we need guns to protect us from decapitating madmen,....

wanna know why?

because before this day has there ever been even one other one?
Chances are,...we are unlikely to ever have another one,....

Possibly one wacko copy cat,... but I hope not,....
We don't need to arm our citizen's against things that haven't happened yet,....

because if we do,......yikes!!!!

Sad but true, oftentimes. Although from what I have read & heard, people in the US are also
quick to run from trouble, rather than stepping in to help.

I remember once returning home from my mother's place about 4 years ago, I was at Lougheed
skytrain station & came upon a guy beating up & attempting to rape a young woman. There's 4
young guys just standing there, afraid to do a damn thing! I asked one of them if they
had a cell phone, told him to call 911 immeadiately. I walked right up behind the guy & kicked him
in the balls. The cops said I was right to call them, but that I shouldn't have aproached him myself,
as it was too dangerous.
I gave those 4 young guys hell though, before I went home. Called them spineless cowards &
asked them how they'd feel if something like this happened to their girlfriend, or sister or mother?!
How would they feel, if no one stopped to help?

To me there is a BIG elephant in the room concerning this story. Made more obvious by the astonishing little that the authorities are saying. It will be interesting to see what eventually comes out about the perpetrator. If you want the truth check the Blogs, not our media.

Sweet creeping jezzus ... you are not a coward to run when someone in the middle of nowhere starts to go berzerk on a bus with a gigantic knife!!

What could any of those people have done to stop this death? It sounds like he had probably killed that poor soul before anyone figured out what was going on, so even if it was the wild, wild west and someone did have gun and was able to shoot him, the end result most likely would have been the same - innocent dead guy.

The rest of the attacker's disgusting antics were just to drive home that he was ready for anyone who wanted to take him on. If someone had seen his knife or noticed anything odd about him, then maybe they are a coward for not saying anything but we are taught to assume that people aren't going to go around stabbing, gutting and beheading people on the bus.

I have nothing but compassion for the people on the bus - what a horrific event! I hope the poor soul who he murdered is in a better place and my thoughts are with his family and friends.

Michaelann:

Re your remarks re people being afraid to come to someone's assistance...

I had experience with this some years back. Some young thugs broke into my car at a mall, while I ran into a store to pick something up, and stole all my Xmas groceries. They took them to the bus stop across the street, took out the expensive stuff, left the rest, and took off on a bus, except for one who hung around for some reason (probably needed a different bus . He was pointed out to me by people at the bus stop. I confronted him, he advanced on me menacingly, but fortunately the police arrived shortly. What sticks in my mind is that until the police got there NOT ONE MAN was prepared to intervene on my behalf, though the guy was unarmed and there were several of them. Lesson learned: Be prepared to fend for yourself cause good Samaritans are scarce on the ground!

And here's another one....

The idea of a half dozen Dirty Harry wannabe's pulling loaded pistols out of their pockets and backpacks and opening fire in a moving crowded bus doesn't really appeal to me either.

It would seem like the attacker was probably mentally ill/drugged, from that description of the attack. The person he attacked was probably dead within a few seconds, and would not have been saved by such an action.

Faced with such an attacker, the people on board did the right thing.

Notice how many people died, or were wounded in the attack.

Had everyone been armed, that probably would not have changed - or if it had, it would have been far more deadly. It takes a trained person, a well trained one, to end such an attack without causing even more damage.

I'd take the bus in a second, without any fear at all.

Sounds like that (relatively rare -- at least here in the US) case of genuine criminal insanity. Which means it goes beyond just clinically insane (psychotic , or what-have-you) and indicates a lack of the knowledge of right from wrong, or lack of the ability or forethought to carefully pre-plan and pre-meditate to avoid being captured, and so on. I heard it explained by a law teacher thus; if there were police present, on the bus in this instance, this sick man likely would have behaved just as he did (or at least would have tried to) because he's in the throes of florid criminal psychosis.

All that having been said, on a very macabre note but seriously...... is it that "easy" to get a head off of another human being with only one knife ?? The man must have been quite strong, and/or the blade razor sharp. I know they did it in those alQaeda videos (which I've never seen) but I heard it took ... awhile to do fully. And another thing I've always wondered; is it just myth that one can still "see" for several moments afterwards?? Sorry, reading about this case just brought all those morbid thoughts and questions back up to me once again...

Nebula 22,

I get the point you're making about the Second Amendment.

Honestly what difference do you think a firearm would have made in this particular case? The perpetrator was comming at the victim from a distance with the knife. He was right next to him in the same seat, Close range, The victim was at the worst disadvantage possible.

It does not seem to me like a firearm would have made a difference for the victim, maybe you know something most people have not thought of, explain your theory on this one.

In this particular case,...the passenger's at least some of them didn't know what was actually going on until buddy was displaying his trophy head,....most thought a normal fight had broken out,....some saw him stab at the man and since the victim was for some of the time screaming which alerted others, even though buddy had a BFKnife this clearly was not a one hit deal either,....

what seems to be overlooked her is the bravery of those keeping this nutburger locked in the bus until the cops came,....kudos to them for acting quickly,....

had he gotten out of the bus how many more people might have been hurt or killed,....
so much for the Canadian wimps

BTW apparently I pegged it,...The news is zeroing in on the fact that passengers can get on a bus with anything and that for intercity travel they are considering having passengers pass a screening similar to what we have to do for the airport,...that's inter city,...not in city

And you will also notice that even the attacker was taken into custody unharmed.

I'm still safer walking around Canada (or taking a bus) than almost any American I know. The chances of me facing an attacker , especially one armed with a firearm, are almost zero. The chance of being attacked or killed by someone unknown to me are roughly the same.

If you think I'm lying, check our homicide rate in Canada per capita.

Typically, those killed are criminals (killing each other) , or spouses in domestic violence cases. It's almost unheard of for a stranger on stranger homicide to occur here, as in this case.

This was an incident that could have occurred anywhere, and only one person died or was wounded. That's the best possible outcome that could be expected in such an attack, realistically.

If someone is sitting beside you, a psychotic person with a knife, you are essentially dead anyway - especially if you are not expecting the threat. Even an armed passenger would be in the same situation as an unarmed one, in such a scenario.

News like this makes me f*ckin sick....and of course it has to be "top story" what the f*ck is the matter with people....I'm talking about the media here...not mentally ill killers....what good does it do to spew this shit all over the place? They're just striking fear into people....sure...why not have everybody running scared?

I don't need to know about this morbid shit...NOBODY does...it's not productive in the least....I think that if we took most bad news OUT of the f*cking news...there'd be less bad news to report.....

Sadly this often happens all over the world, not just in Canada. Can you honestly say that if you had witnessed this you wouldn't run for your life?

Don't get me wrong, I admire people who are brave enough to take action in these situations, but i'm just pointing out that fear effects everyone differently and I think most people's instincts would tell them to get out of there.

That is your opinion and you are entitled to it. This incident is all over the news because of its severity and the fact that a beheading is a very rare crime in Canada. Hence, the reason it is all over the local and national media.

Yes, it is startling and morbid, but people need and want to know what is going on in the world around them..the good, the bad, and the ugly! It is not the story that strikes fear into people, but the crime that was committed that does.

Would you rather live in a bubble and not know what is going on around you, even if it is a horrific act?

If the media did not report on the story, there would be a much larger outcry from the public. People would be wanting to know how such a thing could happen and nobody knows about it. Like it or not, the public has a right to be made aware when things such as this occur.

This is such a terrible story. It just makes me sick. Unfortunately, it won't be the last though, as the news is just chock full of them every single day.

It's truly sad and disappointing that no one on that bus was willing to step up and help that young man. There's something terribly wrong when people are unwilling to help another human being in need. This story could have been anywhere (Any Town, Canada, New York, Tokyo, London) with the same results and that's a very scary thought. What does this say about us as humans and as a society? And how does this type of story make you...as a person on an internet dating site feel about the people you may decide to meet? If an individual can get on public transportation and not arouse any suspicions, the same type of person can be anywhere...even an online dating service. How do you balance your fear of hooking up with the crazies and make the decision to meet and possibly date or marry a person from either a site like this or from a chance meeting in a club or restaurant? And how would you feel if you met a person who fled from such an incident? Could you feel any respect? Not trying to hijack the thread, it's just that these types of stories always bring up so many questions.
