Eat less, drink red wine and live longer

Studies into longevity have come up with some interesting conclusions.

Genetic makeup plays a huge role in longevity. People blessed with bodies that produce more HDL cholesterol (the good kind) tend to be healthier longer. If those HDL molecules are larger than the average the improved health benefits are even more remarkable because the larger molecules do a better job of sweeping away the LDL cholesterol (the bad kind) molecules. There isn't much you can do (at least not presently) about your genetic programming to produce HDL in greater than average size or quantities.

Diets that produce less insulin appear to contribute to longevity.

A variety of organisms ranging from fruit flies, lab mice and a certain type of worm live considerably longer when fed a near-starvation diet. Evidently their body goes into survival mode in response to reduced caloric intake.

Resveratrol, a compound in red wine that is recognized to have many improved health benefits in mice, including warding off old age, making fat mice healthy and better endurance.

So undoubtedly you wonder if you wanted to improve your odds of living longer and healthier just how little food would you be required to eat and how much red wine you must drink. You would have to cut the caloric intake to about one third of average diet, less than 1,900 calories a day.

Extrapolating the data gained from the studies with mice, to intake enough resveratrol to make a difference you would need consume 1,000 glasses of red wine daily.

So please be responsible and drive safely!

Are you aware if you have been genetically blessed with more than average and/or larger than average HDL molecules?

What measures do you already take, or may now start, in an effort to live a longer and healthier life?

Move the beer to the back of the fridge so it's more work getting it .
Change channels manually half the time .
Let the cat have some mozzarella instead of just the pizza crusts .
Small steps ....

I understand the calorie intake,,,but I'm saying screw the red, red, red wine and sticking to my sippin,,,,,,,whiskey.

Oh,,, I actualy do physical activities as soon as I wake,,,until I go to bed each day. No diet. No gym membership. And I actually eat (or try to) things that don't last a year and a half if left in the fridge. It's a bizarre concept,,but so far has worked for me.

Really, I should have procreated because I'm pretty blessed. My HDL is so good that the tech who checked my blood at a recent Act Now clinic asked me what I was doing to have such great levels :)

I have cut out fried everything from my diet, drink a lot of milk and have a lot of dairy (yogurt, cheese, etc) and pretty much no pop. I drink one coffee a day and try to have a cup or two of green tea, eat mostly whole grains (but never go a day w/o bread) and have chocolate daily. I hardly ever drink. My exercise is mainly walking and dancing. I could lose 10 lbs but my BMI, cholesterol, etc. are all right where they should be.

I actually need to eat more fruit & veggies; I'll do it for a long while and then fall out of the habit and have to get myself going again.

I think that, overall, while I have good health, I started feeling even better when I quit eating most meat (not really vegetarian, just mostly bored with most meat) and all fried foods and overly fatty foods like chips.

You are fortunate to be blessed to abundance of HDL. I am not so lucky, thanks to genetics.

My HDL and LDL levels are not alarming but tend to be not quite where doc wants them to be. I struggle with various dietary measures, including my caught salmon, salmon oil, ground flax seed in my porridge, almonds, walnuts, etc.

I was taking a supplement obtained from a health food store and when I went for more they were sold, so I went to the competition. There I had the good fortune of talking to a very knowledgeable nutritional therapist who advised the more practical solution was to address the liver, the organ that produces cholesterol. So on her advice I now take Milk of Thistle and hope for marked improvement in the next blood test.

I eat lots of fresh produce, fruit and vegetables and not much meat, some days no meat at all.

For its fibre content to I ate a whole grapefruit almost every day and one nurse told me that contributes to weight loss as well and I think I see evidence of that.

Onchy -

You might want to check into the Satiety Index. It's a listing of foods that make people feel most full. Many of them are low-fat and actually good for you. I figure if people ate more foods that filled them up quickly, they might not be as inclined to gain weight.

I'm a big potato fan and potatoes happen to be top of the satiety index list. I have not had a problem with my weight ever. I know potatoes are a little high on the glycemic index but I think feeling full at the cost of few calories is worth it. Of course, this doesn't mean potatoes slathered in bacon bits and butter

And after you have drank a lot of red wine, which could be hard on the liver, get up and drink a lot of coffee because coffee is now supposed to be said to fight off liver disease. They say it may be because coffee is an anti inflammatory.

Health warning: the next pandemic!

I went to a dinner party last night, where I and other guests enjoyed copious amounts of alcohol.

I awoke this morning not feeling well, with what could be described as flu-like symptoms; headache, nausea, chills, sore eyes, etc.

From the results of some initial testing, I have unfortunately tested positive for what experts are now calling Wine Flu.

This debilitating condition is very serious - and it appears this is not an isolated case.

Reports are flooding in from all around the country of others diagnosed with Wine Flu. To anyone that starts to exhibit the aforementioned tell-tale signs, experts are recommending a cup of tea and a bit of a lie down.

However, should your condition worsen, you should immediately rent a DVD and take some Advil (Advil seems to be the only drug available that has been proven to help combat this unusual type of flu). Others are reporting a McDonald's Happy Meal can also help in some cases. If not, then further application of the original liquid, in similar quantities to the original dose, has been shown to do the trick.

Wine Flu does not need to be life threatening and, if treated early, can be eradicated within a 24-48 hour period.

Cheers!

NOTE
If you find you are complaining a lot, it may be that it has mutated into Whine Flu. This is particularly common in men and can quickly spread to their partners where the symptoms are detected as a serious case of eye-rolling.

Is there truly a distinction of red vs white wine? I have heard many
times, that a small quantity of daily wine can be a good thing.
Does it matter if it is Red .. or .. White? I wonder because it is the Red wine
that is one of my migraine triggers. White wine does not bother me.

Resveratrol, a compound in red wine that is recognized to have many improved health benefits in mice, including warding off old age, making fat mice healthy and better endurance.

Perhaps it is the compound resveratrol that triggers your migraine headaches?
