| Woman killed in trash compactor[Thread Closed] Posted: 8/20/2008 9:54:06 AM | My heart goes out to the victim here. And by victim I mean the security guard these women maced and the store they stole from. I hope the surviving sister faces some serious charges for the assault on the security guard. Other than that... if you play with fire you might get burned.
DELTA TWP. - "It was a fairly minor crime with a fairly major consequence."
Those were the words of Eaton County Undersheriff Fred McPhail, describing a series of events Monday morning that led from the theft of less than $500 worth of children's clothing to a woman being crushed in a trash compactor.
Police were called at about 10:15 a.m. Monday by an employee of the Goodwill Store on West Saginaw Highway who said a woman was screaming, stuck inside the trash compactor, which was on at the time. The compactor is located behind the store.
That woman, Tyree Monique Tate, 26 of Delta Township, was extracted and transported to a nearby hospital, where she died Tuesday morning. Preliminary autopsy reports list the cause of death as multiple crush injuries.
Tate and the other woman, whom McPhail said is Tate's sister, took children's clothing valued at less than $500, police said. Police have not recovered the merchandise.
"It's probably one of the most unusual things I've heard about in my 20-plus years of law enforcement, and a tragic one at that," McPhail said.
At 9:54 a.m., police received a call advising them of a shoplifting in progress at a TJ Maxx store in the Lansing Mall.
Two women had fled from TJ Maxx after spraying a store security officer in the face with a pepper spray to get away, according to Michael Cook, general manager of the mall.
The two crossed Saginaw Highway to the Goodwill store. They stopped at the store's large, green trash compactor, designed to be fed from the store's rear loading dock.
McPhail said it appears Tate ignored the multiple "Keep Out" signs and climbed into the compactor, which was not on at the time. The sister was found hiding near the compactor, and tried to run from police toward a nearby Meijer store but was quickly arrested, he said.
The sister was uncooperative and told police she barely knew Tate - and only by her street name, Diamond - and didn't know where she was, McPhail said.
At the same time, a Goodwill employee turned the compactor on to use it.
"I think it's very likely that if she had told police where her sister was, they would have arrested (Tate) and she wouldn't have been crushed," McPhail said. "I'm sure that she's agonizing over that decision, being her sister."
Employees at TJ Maxx and Goodwill declined to comment, deferring to corporate spokespeople, who did not return calls seeking comment.
Tate's sister was released, McPhail said, pending further investigation. He said a warrant for her arrest will likely be issued after prosecutors have decided which charges to bring against her.
Tate's family gathered at her Delta Township apartment Tuesday. A man who answered the door said he and the rest of her family would not talk to the media about the incident.
"It's certainly a tragedy, senseless really that it happened," McPhail said. "Our thoughts and prayers certainly go out to her, her family and any children she may have left behind."

What do you want to bet that the surviving sister sues the GoodWill business? Or the cops for not finding her in time....

It's things like this that are part of the natural selection process, which weeds the total and complete idiots out of the gene pool.
I for one and thankful for the trash compactor company for helping take some idiot genes out of society.

I was going to say the same thing. Sadly, she will probably win, too.
It's a pretty heavy penalty for shoplifting, but nobody forced her to climb into the trash compactor. It's her own fault.
Well both people deserve the Darwin award for complete and utter stupidity.
The surviving one wouldn't qualify since she's still in the gene pool. The dead one sure does qualify, if she hasn't already reproduced. Gotta love those Darwin awards.

I thought that when I first read the article. I bet the sister's phone is ringing off the hook now with lawyers wanting to sue for the trash compactor being unsafe. Why anyone walking by could just climb in to their deaths!
Ever wonder why lawn mowers have all those stickers on them about how unsafe it is to reach inside while the blade is moving? Someone did and probably sued and got paid.

She did ignore multiple warning signs when she got in there. It's a really horrible way to go. Of the jobs i've had, there were a couple where I had to load those dam things.
Last thing you want to do is get in one.
I am just amazed that someone could be that stupid.
Well we will have to see if the dead one gets a Darwin award for removing herself from the gene pool in a most stupid manner.

Einstien said it best... "There are two things without limits. 1) the universe 2) human stupidity... and Im not so sure about the universe"

| Woman killed in trash compactor Posted: 8/20/2008 7:11:34 PM | | I am surprised when the woman inside heard the machine go on that no one that knew how to stop the trash compactor heard her scream. As the person that just turned it on might have heard her. I would think that the switch was right there. I wonder if this particular machine made a lot of noise. Someone heard her scream, but I guess they couldn't fathom that the screams were coming out from inside the trash compactor. Who in there right mind would hide in there. Or the person thought it was normal for rags to sound like a woman in labor. Its not funny I know but what a way to go. Crushed to death among sweaty socks and used underwear and stuff. | |

Unless they had a lot to throw away, most people just toss the trash in, hit the button (unless it's a automatic) and walk away. People may have heard her screams later and not when she was crushed. Who knows?
But I also have to say I worked at a factory many years ago where someone needed to cut off the machine quickly and two different people paniced and were hitting everything BUT the emergency off switch. No one had fallen in or anything, but some very expensive equipment was ruined. It was too funny watching these two try to stop the machine in a state of panic.

| Woman killed in trash compactor Posted: 8/20/2008 9:15:06 PM | I don't advocate the death penalty for assault or shoplifting, I would much rather they spent some time in prison.
The idea that this is somehow justice is rather disgusting. A woman was slowly crushed to death, a human being. Obviously not the best example of her species, but we're not talking about a rapist or a murderer.

The idea that this is somehow justice is rather disgusting. A woman was slowly crushed to death, a human being. Agreed. She was someone's sister, someone's daughter. Everyone makes bad choices from time to time and some pay a big price for that choice. If you read the Darwin Awards from cover to cover, it is actually more depressing than it is funny.
My heart goes out for the security guard who got maced. How is that any way comparable to being crushed to death? Security guards know what the risks are - that wasn't the first time mace was used to commit a crime and it won't be the last. Being maced is no walk in the park but it isn't on the same level as being crushed to death.

| Woman killed in trash compactor Posted: 8/20/2008 9:54:28 PM | I think it's possible to feel sympathy for both the security guard who got maced and the woman shoplifter who got CRUSHED to death in the trash compacter. Our hearts and minds are complex enough to do both.
I knew (and cared for) someone who died that way to be honest, and I've lain awake at night imagining the horror of it.

| Woman killed in trash compactor Posted: 8/20/2008 10:03:16 PM | I admit I'm a bit embarrassed by some of the more boorish commentary in this thread. Have we descended into the abyss so much that we cannot see the light anymore?
Had this woman stolen a diamond. Had she stolen a new TV. I would still not trivialize her death but the fact that she stole childrens clothing just weeks before school starts tells me this woman wanted to send her kids to school in something new to make them feel proud and ended up losing her life. Yes ...my heart goes out to her. The pain of not being able to provide for your child is indescribable. It doesn't make shoplifting right but I think I understand this woman's motives.

It may have been since they really "needed" the clothing and could not afford it, or they just wanted some free clothing. Regardless of their motive, what they did was wrong ... absolutely ... there is no doubt about that. But, the thoughts of some people on this thread is worse than the act of these two sisters, IMHO. She was pretty desperate to jump into the trash compactor, that is for sure. It is a very unfortunate accident.
