Condom packages bear an expiry date (note to self... reduce landfill waste and stop buying the value discount box).
How accurate are those expiry dates? Does the effectiveness at preventing conception diminish at the same rate as effectiveness to prevent transmission of STDs?
Would you - as a couple - in the heat of passion and very much wanting to be intimate NOW, and not having ready access to fresh condoms, make a decision to proceed and take a chance with expired condoms, hoping the condom will still prevent conception or transmission of STDs?
How long past the expiry date will you take a chance, a week, a month, 3 months, half a year, a year, longer?
Now the big moral question:
If your partner was unaware of the fact the condoms had expired, would you (or have you in the past) still use them without advising your partner of the expiration?
Tight lines.

| Using condoms that have expired Posted: 8/22/2008 9:39:20 AM | I try to use em all up way before the expiry date lol or ideally be in a situation where they aren't necessary.
On topic: Yes if they were expired I would tell the person, I also look at expiry dates and don't depend on the other person to remember to do so. Rate of transmission after an expiry date I have no idea on, I imagine it would depend on the type and the materials it is made from. Condoms can also break down before the expiry date so always a risk in my mind.

| Using condoms that have expired Posted: 8/22/2008 9:40:14 AM | | I have never in my life looked at the date on a box of condoms. I just assume that if London drugs has them for sale then they must be ok to use. Usually I buy them in the box of 3 and they are gone by the next morning. | |
|
| Using condoms that have expired Posted: 8/22/2008 9:54:16 AM | No, I err... on the side of caution.
I wouldn't use one within a few months of expiration (I used to throw them out within 6 months of expiring) they go through some much already before they even get to you i.e. temperature fluctuations, moisture, crushed, smashed, manhandled!
I live in the United States. Where if I wanted I could walk into any planned parenthood and get fistful over fistful if need be (for FREE).
Why risk your health, OR pocket book (getting pregnant) for one fleeting moment of passion. If you are using a condom for pregnancy or STD protection don't take chances. Hahahaha if it's expired....why even use a condom??? I think that's more the question.
I have thought about what you are saying before, if the condom companies factor in a safety rating like they stamp them with an expiration date with truly like 6 months more to go if someone was to actually use the condom up to the month of expiration..
On another note....
Your thread makes me think about all the times I just took for granted that the condom the" strange man" had was even safe to use or he just grabbed any ole' one trying to get laid.... But I can say the older I got the more I was to hand someone a condom even if they had one, I just didn't want to trust theirs over mine.
Kinda makes me think of all the expired condoms I have in my basement hahahaha yeah, I keep them around for "containment" purposes more than for protection purposes now.... I am in a sexual committed relationship and have an IUD, so they are more for when we wanna get busy....but without the clean up afterward....
I save the flavored ones..not for taste...but that latex smell can make you gag sometimes.
hahaha.... | |

I am glad you brought that up. I meant to in the original post but got sidetracked.
So the other big question is:
Do you implicitly trust your partner to use condoms that are in good condition and have not expired.
Would you feel it inappropriate or would it break the mood and quench the passion as the latex hat is about to unrolled, to reach out your hand and say "I'd like to see the package please."?
Perhaps it would be prudent to examine all the love-making toys prior to commencing. Make sure the batteries are charged up, flashlight, handcuffs (don't forget the key!), Astro Glide and yes, adequate supply of "fresh" condoms.

| Using condoms that have expired Posted: 8/22/2008 10:49:12 AM | Well if they were my "partner" I would hope to trust them. And be purchasing them together.
If we were still sexual active with other people and still in the early stages of a "maybe" relationship I would not in front of them examine their condom stash, but while there were out of the room maybe showering or something, check the dates and examine the packages. Just for some perspective.
But then it makes me think, shouldn't they be happy and grateful for me wanting to know, and being so pro-active. What you do with one person is what you are most likely going to do with all. And how I approach our sexual relationship is how I would should be approaching all others.
If someone took offense to me wanting look at the package before hand, I think I would reexamine my thoughts on them. And LEAVE because they might be hiding something or they are not all that concerned with taking care of their condoms, and if they don't take care of their condoms they don't take care of themselves.
Again, I live in an area where condoms are plentiful....
Hell, if I had any doubt I would just bring a whole bunch of my own and leave them at his house that way I know whomever he is being sexual active with he'll be safe with them, so in turn I'll be safe with him....
(some background, I live in Yakima County which has the highest per capita rate of unwed teen pregnancies in the United States, so around where I am from they try and throw condoms at people, hahaahahh in the hopes they will use them)

| Using condoms that have expired Posted: 8/22/2008 11:39:51 AM | Best-before dates should never be exceeded of course!! Even within their useful lifetime, these devices should be stored where they will not degrade due to heat expoure or mechanical damage. Do not store in pockets of tight jeans, wallets, etc. Do not leave in sunny windows.
There are a good many other problems with condoms which make me wonder if it is even worth it to use them to have sex with women who have known or suspected STD. I've come to the sad conclusion that it is best to avoid sex with women of this persuasion. A summary of the problems follows.
First, it is difficult to find condoms sufficiently large... Most places assume that one size fits all... This is simply untrue.
When I was a lad the things used to come in three different sizes... and there were several different brands that all provided (have you guessed it yet??? ... small regular and large). Large was the only size that fits your truly very well...
But now condoms mostly come in different varieties. Lots of varieties but all regular-sized. I'm here to tell you that if the regular size is too small in strawberry flavor, it is also too small in sensi-lube, ribbed, colored, prolonging, hot sensation, extra thin.... or any other variety.
A significant problem is that condoms eliminate skin-contact sensation (this is because when doing their job they prevent skin contact). As a partial remedy for this, extra-thin are totally a waste of time. One good push and you've just popped through the end of it and made a small elastic-band co_ck-ring out of the thing. In fact regular thickness varieties suffer this problem as well unless the gentleman finishes in a reasonably short time.
Over-time sex implies friction. This friction will degrade a latex prophylactic until it suffers catastrophic failure (at least in my experience).
You'd be surprised how catastrophic condom-failure can change the way a woman feels about a man. Usually this is not for the better.
Selfishly IMHO, females rarley pause to consider that the man used the device for his own reasons. Condom failure has now exposed him to all of the risks he used the device to avoid. The female's attidue in this regard is hard to fathom -- but concern for the male seems to become completely absent from her consciousness. At least I'VE never received an apology for this... maybe some men have.
One would think that stopping coitus and adding more lubrication would solve the friction problem... However, the unromantic nature of this action may serve to distract the male from the activity of principal interest (especially if the guy has an active mind... or ADD as in my case). Which brings us to the final problem with these little devices...
Even when the action the condom will receive does not exceed bursting strain, it is difficult even for an experienced woman to apply one of these things well and properly to a flacid penis... Similarly, it is difficult for one to remain in place when the erection is lost temporarilly (as does happen over a marathon session).

apparently I have to bow out of this thread...

Why would you wait until they were out of the room to inspect them. If you are open enough with each other to have sex together then checking the date right in front of them shouldn't be an issue. Like you say below that statement if it is a big deal then you would be outta there.
Hell, if I had any doubt I would just bring a whole bunch of my own and leave them at his house that way I know whomever he is being sexual active with he'll be safe with them, so in turn I'll be safe with him....
Yikes, I hope you don't think that you would be safe this day in age. Multiple partners with our without condoms is a HUGE risk. Condoms only protect against some things and that is only assuming it doesn't break. There is still skin to skin contact regardless and in my opinion they provide little protection against diseases such as Herpes. It helps yes but is by no means "safe sex", it is only "safer" than if you used no condom at all.
Didn't mean to pick on ya here but those 2 statements really stood out for me ;-)
|
| Using condoms that have expired Posted: 8/22/2008 5:50:25 PM | Your completely right "Stinkerpot" Multiple partners at any time is dangerous.
But let's be realistic here, if you could trust everyone you were with to only be with you. Well we wouldn't have disease now would we. We wouldn't have the divorce rate we do now because of cheating spouses would we. Or all the people on here whining and crying that their woman or man was cheating on them either.
In a perfect world I could trust you and you could trust me, but it just isn't that way! So until someone has given you their commitment, like you wake up to them and fall asleep next to them most nights, and even then, (who knows?) lets just as I do assume they are sleeping with others. I was merely giving a suggestion to the meek and more mild folk out there who might be a little too demure to risk being seen as pushy or just don't want to come across to their lovers as untrustworthy.
Check when they are not looking if you don't have the courage to be upfront. You'd be amazed at some of the men and women out there nowadays!
And further more two people are only in a Monogamous relationship till one of them decides to go be in a Monogamous with someone else. How about that????

| Using condoms that have expired Posted: 8/22/2008 5:54:44 PM | It's amazing how some people are so eager to give out personal information on these threads!!! But it is your choice to answer right????
Gracefully bowing out too!

| Using condoms that have expired Posted: 8/22/2008 6:13:39 PM | Well you pple who are purchasing condoms in bulk are either.......
Very optomistic!..... Very Cheap!...... Swingers....(here on POF looking to expand your Swinger's Network)......
.............and if you are using condoms past their expiry date...well you like to play Russian Roulette...and live dangerously.
NO GLOVE, NO LOVE is my policy....and I like new gloves!
|
| Using condoms that have expired Posted: 8/22/2008 6:39:49 PM | Ok I looked at the date on condoms today because of this thread..... The ones I looked at expired in april of 2010...... Why would this be even a concern to anyone? If you can't use condoms you buy with that kind of time frame, Maybe it's best you just strangled yourself with a celibate rope, Because you are already celibate and just going through the motions. | |
|
| Using condoms that have expired Posted: 8/22/2008 6:43:51 PM | Question. ^^^^^^^^^^
Is there an expiry date on the above mentioned Celibate Rope?....and where does one find that kinda thing?....does Home Depot carry it?...is it made of organic fibre....such as Hemp?....and can you get it in Canada?
|
| Using condoms that have expired Posted: 8/22/2008 6:44:22 PM | ^^^^ either that or you are in a monogamous relationship with someone, have both been tested, have the baby thang covered and don't need em lol To me expired condoms mean I am having more fun hehe | |
|
| Using condoms that have expired Posted: 8/22/2008 7:22:45 PM | maybe we can just use the expired condoms to have sex with ourselves. After all you never know where your hand has been. | |
|
| Using condoms that have expired Posted: 8/22/2008 10:11:19 PM | O darn it!!!thats what I forgot to pack ( off to the drug store) lol 1.I would not use a condom past the due date at all. 2.I agree with another poster 'no glove no love' I value my life to much for that. 3. I have not and would not be deceptive to my partner about anything,if trust fails everything else crashes with it. | |

| Using condoms that have expired Posted: 8/23/2008 2:36:07 PM | What a terrific topic..OP
Isn't it wonderful that we have so many choices in this age of marketing, we can get ribbed or lubed sensation plus or one with spermicidal gel, ones that glow or taste like .... chocolate, reservoir tip(in case we want to save it?) sheep's skin, latex or latex free in a variety of shapes and sizes Oh it is so nice to have a peni$...................
Isn't it awfully nice to have a peni$? Isn't it frightfully good to have a dong? It's swell to have a stiffy, It's divine to own a d1ck. From the tiniest little tadger To the world's biggest prick! So three cheers for your willy or John Thomas. Hooray for your one-eyed trousers snake. Your piece of pork, your wife's best friend, Your Percy or your c0ck. You can wrap it up in ribbons, You can slip it in your sock. Just don't take it out in public, Or they will put you in the dock ...And you won't come back.
|
| Using condoms that have expired Posted: 8/23/2008 5:58:21 PM | On one hand if it has expired it means you aren't getting lucky... If you are one hot rod and using them all up before they are expired, you are contributing to the land fill problems...
Wonder if there is a recycling program for used or expired rubbers?????
| |
|
| Using condoms that have expired Posted: 8/23/2008 6:04:15 PM | if you used 730 rubbers in a year, and made them into a tire....
you'd have to call it a Good-Year.....
