Posted: 8/24/2008 9:38:33 AM
I just read a guy's profile who said no way would he date someone overweight, yet his belly was a little out there. Anyway this got me to thinking about what is considered overweight . I would appreciate your honest answers.

How many lbs is overweight to you ?
Would you contact someone or reply to someone who may be a few lbs overweight?
Do u consider the person's personality before u consider their weight ?

Thanks for your imput.

It all depends if they have muscle or not as muscle is a lot different to fat, but for me women with a bmi of over 30 are overweight, government guidelines say if your bmi is 25 or over you are overweight but I think it should be 30

I may be stepping into a big mess with this however. As a guy I am average yes i realize that average now has come to include a few extra pounds here or e that reflect an indulgent diet or a lack of exercise. If one bases their standards on the government then we would all be starving skeletons. Without saying much I would say that one has to be comfortable with themself as a person and that determines if one is overweight or not.

This seems to be a VERY common occurance in guy's profiles. There is a strong double standard going on. I'm ok with a guy saying what he's attracted to, but a lot of the profiles I have read have been down right rude. I don't know that if I were the thinner person they obviously want to attract, that I would give them a second look. I am overweight and I have listed myself as being a BBW. I'm not going to misrepresent myself. I am not ashamed of who I am. I think it's harder to write a profile when you are larger. Just because a person is overweight does not mean they aren't healthy. I cardio walk 3-4 times a week 3-4 miles at a time, kickbox 2 times weekly, and lift weights 3-4 times weekly. I try to eat as healthy as I can. I have quite a bit of muscle, but I also have fat and curves. I do consider a guy's personality first, looks second. I personally am attracted to bigger men.

I love this line. Someone seeing reason in the midst of the clouds that seem to be blocking the vision. :)

mmm not sure about this at all, I have recently lost 2 stone and gone from a size 16 to a size 12 and I am a healthy weight according to BMI, and at 9 st 9 (give or take) I am no where near being a skeleton. I did honestly think that BMI was a load of baloney before I lost the weight but now I can see that I look a lot better, I feel a lot better and I am presuming I am a damn site healthier!

so by that you mean due to most Americans being overweight that it is ok?? I am not saying it isn't ok to be overweight, however we perceive overweight to be, it is our own personal choice to be the size we are. But to say that most Americans are overweight so why should I be thin is jsut stupid, we are not all sheep, we do not have to follow suit to what everyone else does. And also you have to think about someone's health if they are overweight, it isn't just all about appearances. Yes looks will fade and so will your health eventually so why help worsen it??

I agree with the post that stated a person that was uncomfortable with their weight was overweight. I have seen some fairly large people that look great just like that. They are full of energy and get around great. I have seen some people slightly overweight and terribly out of shape. I guess it depends on the person.

No such thing, unless you are morbidly obese, and then that is really a life threatening condition. I hate people (especially other men) who are so shallow as to view others as "chubbies or fatties".....I despise those terms. A beautiful face attached to a large frame is one of the sexiest things I can think of. I like women with some extra padding....I personally don't want to be with "Twiggy".

A pretty face, beautiful personality and soul.....what else could man want. When other guys I know are making comments about women they see (and you know the comments I am referring to) I cringe and think to myself how much I'd like to get to know her. The only reason I don't is because I am too damn shy. I know, I know.....I shouldn't be but I am.

I have a profile on PlentyOfFish if you'd like to check it out....."southernbiker"

Thanks everyone for your comments but, i only heard a couple of ppl say that they consider the person's personality over their weight.... And to them I applaud !!!

I have many friends who are according to the "government" are overweight. Guestion there is, just how much r we gonna let the "government" control our lives.

Second part, "personality"... most everyone's heart will show thru their personality. I don't judge others for their inabilites or incapabilities, whatever they may be. On the other hand, i will help them anyway i can, including a daily walk around the block daily if needed. Matter of fact i could use a friend to help me walk around the block.

Guys are so double standard. We can have a belly, but we want a supermodel. Thing is, some girls that are overweight are hot, and some that are "skinny" are not hot. THere's a girl that I know who is overweight, but she is just sexy as hell. I think some girls just know how to flaunt it. And personality goes a long way.

I would start off by saying that people who are 20 pounds overweight tend to live longer and are sick less than people who are 20 pounds underweight (don't have time to grab sources but look it up if you wish). There is a bit of a struggle between what I find attractive overwriting what I know is most important in a relationship. What we find attractive is going to be different for everyone.

Generally I prefer someone who is in the 10-20 pounds overweight area. I find women in that range more attractive than the muscular type, more attractive than the tiny fit type, and more attractive than the underweight skinny type. Twenty pounds is just an average number, it depends on the body type, I suppose I would call it more of a full figure which can exist at hgher levels. Shape and curvature are more defining for me than true weight when it comes to attractiveness.

And I know that there are people who are going to be unappealing to me that have great personalities, but those relationships tend to go directly to a really good friendship rather than romance, especially on paper. Not giving people a chance based on a picture on a web page is a mistake. Often times I will find a woman to be sexy from her personality and the way she carries herself and the little things she does. And good lovers can be found in all colors, shapes, and sizes. Our eyes can be our own worst enemy when dating in many ways, and when you get to window shop on the internet it becomes much worse.

It seems that the days of boy meets girl, and they fall in love have slipped us by. Now we windowshop with a checklist of what we want and then try and grab whoever fits the bill that we can afford. More than likely you missed a number of people that you could have really had a good relationship or at least friendship with that that we pass by based on appearance, financial, religous, ethnicity, or family situation issues.

It's been my observation that people tend to store fat in different areas. There are those who store it around their abdomen, those that store it around their upper body, their legs, or their behind. Then, their are those lucky people that store it proportionately over their whole body. Look at my picture. I look either thin, or physically fit, because you only see my upper body. If you saw only my stomach, you'd probably think otherwise. I'm 5' 8" tall and weigh 150 lbs. Well-muscled men the same height could easily weigh 180 lbs and not be over weight. So, for me at least, it's difficult to generalize, or quantify what overweight is. Maybe overweight is similar to beauty, it's in the eye of the beholder.

It all depends on what you see around you and also in the mirror. If you work out in the gym and see alot of hard bodies, you will think anything over a size 6 is big.If you have never stepped foot in a gym and most your co-workers and friends are bigger than you, then you will think you are no worse than average. Most my first dates were disappointments because the first impression was the woman was WAY bigger than her picks.I have learned that if a woman posts a few pics and none are below the waist or neck, then she is probably trying to hide something. Most women who show plenty of full body pics are in great shape and are trying to show off her attributes.Since a pic is all we have to go by initially, then the better shape you are in ,the more profile views you will get.On the other hand, you cannot get a better personality in the gym because it comes naturally, but you can lose 30 pounds in the gym and become very attractive in a few months.I would hope most people want someone with a heart of gold instead of pure beauty, but there also has to be a physical attraction.I think everyone could use a make over at some point, but when the looks fade, you still have to love their mind, soul and heart.

Overweight has become such an over rated subject in America. ALL thanks to hollywood and what is portrayed on the big screen or a tv set. The standards the actors set doesn't apply to mainstreet America. That's the way I see it. Now, another problem is the food we eat. Not our problem, thanks to the people who sabatage the items and ingredients. Alright, to you work-out aholics who eat leafy green salads and watch everything that enters your mouth; you'll disagree I'm sure. To me, there are different types of overweight. The "I don't want to be seen with you overweight", the "I can't get my hands all the way around you overweight" the "Yeah, you've got some shapely curves, but it doesn't matter to me" overweight and so on. To me and for me; it's all about personality. That and a little looks. In Marine Basic, it was 90% mental, 10% physical. The same applies in life with relationships. Personality makes 90% while looks make up 10%. At least in my book that's how it works. And that's my take.

Gina that double standard appears in a lot of womens profiles also. It seems "average" has been expanded to include people's fantasy view of themselves rather than reality.

I list myself as overweight because I am. I work out 5-6 days a week 2 hours a day (1/2 weights 1/2 cardio), and am under 20% body fat. I am in better shape than most "average" guys but I do not like lying or misrepresenting. But I still am overweight by definition so I list myself as such. (although I am not actively using online dating anymore)

I think that the larger issue is this misrepresentation of one's self and peoples refusal to take a honest look at themselves. Hence the same people are on here forever and and they will be on these sites forever until they get real and get over themselves.

I have to beg your pardon, first off women do not have to be 10-20, as you say overweight, to be sexy, I work out 4-5 times a week, a personal trainer, and I take pride in myself, so 20 lbs overweight is not acceptable. LAZY

Over weight is when you walk from your living room to your kitchen and you are gasping for breath due to the excess fat you are carrying.
And yes there are double standards for men when it comes to weigh and what is considered the ideal weigh. I have saw profiles of some men that are in such poor condition that they could not keep up with a snail on a date more or less an over weigh woman. Yet these men stress that if you are over weigh not to bother to contact them. Some of the men are so picky and I am amazed at how choosey they are. I would like to say just one thing "Look-in-the-mirror!"

I agree there seems to be such a double standard going on.It almost makes you afraid to try. When a guy says he only wants slender, athletic women, come on now I'm 61 years old and looking for men that age , I have been told I look very good for my age but I am not 30 any more an neither are they. Kinda gives you a complex about yourself.

Overweight means that you are over the weight recommended by your physician for YOU PERSONALLY. Honestly, you should take all of these little charts and stats that you find online with a grain of salt. I looked at one just for laughs. It said that I, a six-foot-tall male, would be severely overweight if I weighed more than 158 lbs. I like to use the US Army's maximum weight standards (which say that I should weigh 197 lbs or less with no prior military service).

These maximum weights based on age, sex, and height are the most you can weigh if you wanted to join the Army. I realize that most people aren't trying to get into the Army, but if you aim for the weight listed for your age you will be in great shape! If you really want to lose weight, you CAN do it. I have lost 63 lbs so far and I am now below my maximum allowable weight.

Cut out fast food, sodas (even "diet" sodas), and junk food completely until you lose the weight. Drink lots of water and EXERCISE at least every other day. Then and ONLY then, you can add some of these things back in MODERATION. It is not easy (I love junk food too!) but you CAN do it if you set your mind to it.

To echo what some others have said, I will date women who are overweight to a certain point. I won't date a woman who weighs more than me unless she is at least 7 feet tall to justify THAT much extra weight :) I weigh 191 lbs currently. I see no reason for women to reach this weight.

The answer to this question really varies by age, as women are different based on if they are 40 or 60. As a general guideline, I would use the following scale by clothes size (which has adjusted up over the past 10 years according to clothing industry professionals);

0-4 (or still in juniors sizes) - Thin, skinny
4-6 and in shape - athletic
6 - 12 - average
14-16 - a few extra pounds
Over 16 - B&BW

Please keep in mind that the scale can shift slightly one way or another depending on age and fitness level.
