Just wondering if anyone in Calgary has a recommendation for a vet that will come to your house.

I have a very old dog who is failing. I don't really want to make her last ride a trip to the vets - a place that she dislikes, and gets stressed over.

I know that there are vets who do this, and I am in the process of googling, but thought I could reach out here for a name.

Don't remember the name, but there is a clinic on 4th St. N.W., just north orf 42nd Ave. that used to come to houses, don't know if they still do it tho.

My heart goes out to you because of this happening!

We had this happen about 2 years ago or so, one of our old dogs was not going to make it thru the weekend and he was really suffering. Like you, we did not want to distress him by loading him into the car (he was a big dog).

Of course, with our luck, this was on a long weekend and nobody would come out. We finally found a vet out of Dewinton I think that came out. She was awesome. Wonderful lady. Can't remember her name... some help I am huh?

Most vets want you to bring the pet in. I think that's too stressful for them. Better to have it done in a place they're comfortable in. It's hard to find vets to do house calls in the city. Out of town vets are a bit more flexible I find.

I hope you are able to find someone Castaline.

Prayers being sent out for you and your pooch. I know this is a difficult decision for you to make.

Definitely easier to find country/rural vets who will make house calls...for anything and everything.
Our vet...who was actually our horse vet, used to come out on a very regular basis to de-porcupine quill all four of my dogs.

I feel for your situation....in the past 5 years I've had to have three dogs and my 13 year old cat put down ( all after I left them at the farm with my ex and moved to town, but that's another story ).
If you can't find a vet to come to you....you may be able to find one that will prescribe some sedatives to at least ease your dog's anxiety about going to the office.
Honestly, when it comes time, I really do believe that they know that you are trying to help them and ease their suffering and have not found too many animals that are overly anxious at that time.

Oh Janalta, I completely agree.

When we put our old dog down, it was like he knew what was going to happen to him, he completely co-operated when we half dragged/carried him into the garage and he seemed to know what was about to come and accepted it.

I think it was harder on us then it was on the dog. His head was in my lap when he got the injection, and I bawled like a baby. He just looked at me as if to say "it's ok, I'm ready". Then he just closed his eyes.

the vet we used was incredible. She had us bring the other dogs in so they could sniff the old boy, kind of a closure thing I guess. It was very interesting to see how the other dogs reacted. The male husky who was related to the old boy, sniffed him for a bit, then laid down beside him, it was like he totally understood what went on.

Thanks for the kind thoughts.

I've been away all week, and my sis called me at lunch today to tell me that my girl wasn't very good.
I got home and sis says, "it's almost like she was just waiting for you to come home".
She is vastly improved even since I got home at 6ish.

Still looking for a house call vet though. Will go and talk to 'our' vet tomorrow, and see what he has to say, if he has any recommendations.

I'm really sorry to hear this, losing a pet is often as painful as losing a member of the family, my heart goes out to you. I know of a vet in Strathmore who would do the in home thing, I'm just not sure she would do it in Calgary.

Castaline, I know it's not something one likes to think about, but it is an important question all the same...if you can manage to find a vet that will come to your home, what are you going to do with the dog after she is put down? I mean, that is one of the things that the vet's office does take care of for you.

Northern, I cried like a baby every time too. When I had to have my big, beautiful Bernese put down I laid down on the floor with him ( he was too big to put on a table ) through the whole thing, with my head on his....all of the staff just let me stay there for as long as I needed.

I'm not sure if Trans Canada Vet clinic will make a house call, but he might know of someone who will? Possibly the Holistic Vet Clinic might as well?

There are a few house call veterinarians in Calgary. Dr. Susan Ambrose or Dr. Dirk Dekens. They will come to your house and they can also arrange for cremation. If you call your vet, they will be able to give you a few more names.

My thoughts and prayers are with you at this sad time. I commend you for thinking of your dog's feelings and comfort at this time. I had to put my beloved companion to rest on April 26 and know how hard this must be for you.

Hi all, again, thanks for your kind thoughts!
This weekend was a bit of a false alarm (or over reaction...) As of yesterday the things that had me contemplating this giant step were okay, and the old dog was back to her regular "old dog" self.

I know the time IS coming though, and now at least I have a name (Dr Dekens was given to me by more than one person) and I did go talk to my regular vet. I am just happy that I have a bit more time. But am also (apparently) hyper-aware of any discomfort that the old girl is experiencing.

Thanks again for the support

Dirk (Dr. Dekens) is a great guy.... I was going to recommend him as well.

If you have trouble getting a hold of him, let me know. I have his personal
email address.

Best of luck,

Hi, castaline, glad to hear your dog is okay. I am sure she knows she is so loved by you and the family. All your love would comfort her in great ways during her health sufferings; may she has many more peaceful and joyful days with you.

Animals know and if they are very sick, like humans,.. they want to be put down ,,,
Years ago I had serious health issues and asked my doc for some sleeping pills...i only used three out of teh 12 he had given me...
I treasure these because if ever I have a very sick stray or like a stray boy cat that had half its face torn off by a fisher near my home... he was in terrible pain, in some milk I put half a capsule and he was out like a light !!!!,,,I then carried him to my vet and she finished the job....
A 24 year old cat of mine had a stroke and was crying as he could`nt get up...my dog loved this old cat and was licking him ....I gave him a small bit of cheese which he loved and had some sleeping powder in it... he slowly went to sleep and I took him in,,,my vet knew he was very old and she agreed with what I had done... he was put to sleep...
Its a great way of taking the stress off an animal... I really think the reason they do`nt want to go is because they do`nt want to leave us !!!,,,. John

My daughter's cat will be euthanized (sp?) next Sat at 10. Her and I will make the trip to the vet. It was an extremely hard decision for her to make. I really dread that trip. But it is definitely the right thing to do as "Jake" is very old and has suffered somewhat with advanced feline diabetes for the last few months. He has had a very good and spoiled life with us that just love him to pieces even tho he was not the most gracious kind of cat. We think he was feral before my daughter thought that Jake picked her at the spca. He was quite agressive and not really huggable and we worried that when my daughters son was born that Jake would resent a new little person being in his territory and be in attack mode. But, not at all. Jake was a great protector. Anyways, I know that next Saturday will be a gift of kindness to Jake. We will cherish each and every moment we spend with him this week.

Aree, my thoughts are with you.
You are losing a member of your family, can't be easy.

My old dog is still tickin' along.
She ain't perfect, but she eats, and she's mobile. So status quo...

My condolences Areelady. Having been through this just a month ago I understand how difficult and sorrowful a decision like this is. When we give our hearts to friends whose life spans are so much shorter than our own, we inevitably have to face losing them.

However, you’re absolutely right that this will be the best gift of kindness that you can give to this pet. I’ve often felt that we are fortunate to have the ability to extend this great compassion to our beloved pets who are suffering and perhaps when I become very old and very sick, society will have become enlightened enough to extend that same compassion to me.

casta... im sure if you request it , you can buy the needle and fluid from the vet and then administer it yourself when you get home
itll probably save you a bunch of money as well, since you wont require the time of the vet to do it

riiight ^^^ a vet will give over the "juice" to euthanize a pet, maybe if you KNOW the vet really well, but honestly, thats like asking the doc for a prescription for demerol.

In a perfect world, I would hope that you could get the things needed to do this in your own home.

Personally I'm not sure I could "do" this to my own pet. It's one thing to have a vet do it.. but to actually inject it myself.. Not me.. I'm wayyyy too soft for that.

I am not even sure I could handle burial..plus since i want to be cremated.. No little box in the ground for this claustrophic chick.. then I think I want my pets cremated and then I would sprinkle their ashes on their favorite places where we walked together. The memory of your pet will live in your heart forever and I don't need a bucket of ashes on my desk to remind me.
