This morning, Republicans tell me that a worker at Invesco Field in Denver saved thousands of unused flags from the Democratic National Convention that were headed for the garbage. Guerrilla campaigning. They will use these flags at their own event today in Colorado Springs with John McCain and Sarah Palin.

Update: I just spoke with the person at Invesco who found the flags. He thinks both sides are exaggerating a bit. He claims the majority of the bags with flags were near the trash and it was probably an "oversight" by the Democrats rather than a nefarious plot against the flag, but he doesn't believe anyone was coming to get them. "The flags were there for a week and a day and no one came looking for them," the person said.

Here are the statements from the Democrats.

"Stories circulating about flags at the Democratic National Convention are false. We distributed more than 125,000 American made flags at the Convention - the flags removed from Invesco field were intended for other events and taken without permission. It's disappointing that someone would take American flags without authorization and then falsely describe how they were being used. We have the utmost respect for the American flag, and it's sad to see them being used for a cheap political stunt."
- Democratic National Convention Committee

If they were actually intended for other events. Then why were they near the trash for a week?
So the Repulicans took these flags without permission and used these flags at a rally today. maybe next time The DNC won't leave the flags by the trash.
The proper way to dispose of the flag

(k) The flag, when it is in such condition that it is no longer a fitting emblem for display, should be destroyed in a dignified way, preferably by burning.

*Not only is this already being "discussed" in existing threads it is essentially trolling and will result in more bloody knuckles and willie measuring contests than actual productive debates so it's closed now.* TheMadFiddler - PoF Forum Moderator

Instead of allowing thousands of flags to end up in a landfill, the Republicans rescued them from the garbage and put them to productive use. Reduce, reuse, recycle. Others may talk the talk, but these is one party that walks the walk, setting an example that all Americans can follow. In these times of environmental concern, this is one more reason to vote Republican.

Good point Guy, but it's gone on for so long that I'm afraid NEITHER party can do that! I just go with the lesser of two evils.

This is one of the saddest stories to come out of this election cycle. Besides the media attacking a 17 year old girl for being pregnant.

We have the utmost respect for the American flag, and it's sad to see them being used for a cheap political stunt.

The flags were found IN THE DUMPSTER. Then they have the gall to say that they respect the flag.

This is where the Barack Hussein Campaign stores their flags when not used for a cheap political stunt,

the trash.

The only bright side of this story is the part about the Boy Scouts.

I applaud the Boy Scouts for going through the trash bags to recover the American Flags, that were so callously thrown away.

If you guys spent half as much time concerned about the treatment of your fellow citizens as you did over the treatment of the flag - I think it would be a nice change.

At least the flags were made in America.

Geesh, the Harsanyi story is hardly worth a single commentary, let alone a thread.

How did the flags end up in trash bags, in a storage area, near the dumpsters? Hard to say. Invesco Field is a big place. They hire temp workers to do a lot of the manual clean up during and after an event - heavy grunt work done by poorly paid workers. The flags would of been handed out at various points throughout the stadium. Likely the flags arrived in boxes. The boxes would of been broken down (folded flat) and stored for later us. The clean-up crew would of been working throughout the event. The boxes might of been tossed by a worker, unaware of the need to save them. Towards the end of the event, a different worker, confronted with the flags and no place to put them, while laboring under duress by stadium management to get his job done quickly so they could save some dough at the expense of the poorly paid worker, might have grabbed the first thing available to put the flags in - a trash bag. Another highly stressed, but poorly paid worker sees the bags and moves them to the trash area without knowing what is in them.

About the worker who found the flags:

He claims the majority of the bags with flags were near the trash and it was probably an oversight.

These conventions are huge events. There are thousands of small details to attend to. Oversights do happen. No one was going to purposely throw the American Flags in the trash. The flags were misplaced and ended up there. Unfortunate; but these things happen.

I find it strange that people would find callousness in this, yet give a pass to Bush and McCain's callousness as they laughed it up while enjoyed a birthday cake while the city of New Orleans was being trash by a hurricane and thousands of people were dieing.

The Democratic National Convention Committee statement

the flags removed from Invesco field were intended for other events and taken without permission.

It called damage control on the DNC part. They have to make it look like the Republicans are the bad guys.
Blame the poor workers for it. Just forget about the DNC volunteers who help set up and take down the convention.

Ok, I see now. It was all the fault of STRESSED out workers. I think that we should all apologize to people on this thread that assumed the Hussein party just threw away thousands of American Flags.

while laboring under duress by stadium management to get his job done quickly

Poor guy was under duress from Stadium management...

Another highly stressed, but poorly paid worker sees the bags and moves them to the trash area without knowing what is in them

Now another "stressed" poorly paid worker who "didn't know" what was in the bags threw them away...

Amazing how far people will go to justify the Hussein Campaigns blatant disregard for respect for the flag that represents our Country.

Sad....

Not at all. I have merely suggested a logical explanation as to how the flags might have ended up where they did.

It is more likely that, with everything involved in putting on such a massive event, the flags were inadvertently misplaced. It is less likely (in fact, improbable) that a Presidential candidate and their party would have such disregard for the symbol of the nation they hope to eventually lead, that they would throw them out.

There is less to this than some are attempting make of it. Sometimes, when a person (or a political party) has little of value to work with, they make due with whatever they can find.

Besides the media attacking a 17 year old girl for being pregnant. [/quote

Nobody attacked the young WOMAN for getting pregnant, I can understand why a seventeen year old's level of maturity might make it feel that way, though.
