School Board bans "Pizza Day"
Posted: 9/9/2008 8:49:01 AM
Effective this year, the local school board has banned "Pizza Day" from the local public schools, due to the trans fat issue.Kids are unhappy.Parents are unhappy. The Parents Association is running around to restaurants, looking for nutritional pamphlets to find an alternative (which seems kind of futile, since most fast food places aren't going to be any better than pizza).
I can understand that the school board has to take a stance on what is being fed to kids within the school, but that was one day a month. What about the other 19 or 20 days?
Shouldn't they perhaps send memos home stating what the kids aren't allowed to bring in lunches, like doughnuts, chips, sweetened drinks etc...?
I don't know..it all seems a bit "Big Brother-ish",but nutrition begins at home,right?
Schools are saying "Sorry..no more pizza,it's bad for you".But their parents are going to feed them Lucky Charms for breakfast, and take them to McDonald's for dinner.

I just figure,start at the source,and that's the home.

I never had Pizza Day when I was in school. Or any such "food" days.
Are they gonna replace it with a more healthy fare?
Say, "Tofu, broccoli and kelp" day?

"Tofu, broccoli and kelp" day?

Mmmmm...sounds yummy!
Maybe they should try "Sushi Day"?

It doesn't really have to do with cost. The school made money from "Pizza Day".
Kids had to pay $1 a slice.,so they made almost 50 cents a slice profit from it,and used the money towards things like team uniforms and computer programs.

And give them corned beef and cabbage for lunch.

I don't think that should be banned. I think it's great that pop & junk food machines have been taken out of schools, but as for lunches, it's the parents' prerogative what goes into them. I don't see anything wrong with having a pizza treat occasionally--if someone doesn't want that for their child, they can simply not participate.

Also, you can do pizza without that terrible crust. I've used tortillas many times, put cheese, vegetables and meat on them and popped them in the oven. Delicious.

I think pizza would be just as healthy if not healthier then some of the meals offered at my childrens school. The school lunches are loaded with fat, salt and artificial garbage. Processed this and that. YUCK. My kids would be very happy if they would offer a daily salad bar.

I've seen the lunches featured in the cafeteria at my nephew's school on a list he brings home that my sister posts on the fridge. On any given week he'll have chicken nuggets and fries, hot-dogs and fries, pepperoni pizza with garden salad (which he told me was mostly iceberg lettuce), spaghetti and meatballs with garlic bread and then something like bologna and mashed potatoes. The side vegetables offered are usually boiled corn or peas -- sometimes carrots. It's cheap high fat, low-fiber, low-nutrition, overly-processed filler food. And I'm guessing that with a very few exceptions, it's the norm at most public schools in North America.

It's too bad about the pizza ban at your school. The thing is that pizza can actually be a really healthy thing to eat. A lot of pizza chains offer pizza that is now trans fat free, so I'm certain that schools could find providers that offer it. As well, pizza dough can be made more nutritious by adding some whole grain flour to it, and there are tons of pizza toppings that can be used that aren't high fat and high sodium. It just seems that banning pizza altogether just basically means that they were too lazy or stingy to find a more nutritious alternative.

Wow! Banning pizza days at school? It's not like they eat pizza every day, at my daughter's school it's a once a month event. Their focus should be more on educating kids in health/gym on healthy food choices and lifestyle. But unfortunately, poor diet begins and ends at home. Banning pizza days accomplishes nothing if the parents don't teach their children, by example, of a healthy lifestyle. Moderation in anything is key. "Banning" something - from pizza, to sex, etc doesn't accomplish anything without education. I'd love to see the kids get involved in what their lunches are - for a week, have them calculate the nutritional value in their food, then bring the results home and have their parents sign it.

Whatever happened to the natural garbage we used to eat?

Geez, next they'll ban guns in school.

Exactly!Banning their Pizza Day means squat,if their parents give them $5 for lunch and they go blow it on chips, candy, and pop at the store. ( I see that alot!)
They need to bring nutrition into the learning focus much earlier than they do.
Start in Kindergarten,not in Gr.6 or 7.
And,it does need to filter into the home lunches.

My 7 yr old complained to the cafateria lady this week that the breakfast choices they offered were not healthy choices. I had to chuckle to myself when she told me this. I imagne if she complains to often I will hear about it.

So what are they going to do about school lunches that serves french fries, chicken nuggets, burgers, and chips? Not to mention the god forbidden chocolate milk. cookies, and even ravioli?
Sounds like the school needs to have a meeting and take a vote. Maybe get back into the reality of things...
If not then lunches are going to be even more boring and kids wont eat them at all.
Do they ban birthday cake and things of that nature too, like Halloween treats?
Who's braniac idea was this in the first place??????

Chocolate milk doesn't bother me since there is SOME nutritional value, atleast the child is getting some dairy, Our schools offer juice now. They did a BAN on Sodas, but the vending machines have water, flavored water and the ever sugar loaded FRUIT PUNCH. If the sugar doesn't wire up those kids the red dye will for sure! Last artical I read said most peds feel that most, (not all) juices were just as bad for kids as soda, they do not have as much nutritional value as people think and are loaded with sugars.

My grandkids have an option of drinks at school,as far as sugary drinks, soda, milk, and juice. But if you read the packaging, the chocolate milk has as much sugar as a soda, and the juice is almost 90% sugar in some instances.
My daughter has taught them to drink botled water, but after reading some of the labels there too, we also found that even some bottled water has sugar, or syrup in it!
So best senerio, is pack a good nutricious lunch, home bottled water, and stand over your kid with a big stick in case they go reaching for a bite of someone elses food in the cafeteria...
It's rediculous!!! And so is banning the pizza....
Kids need to experiment and eat different foods.
And isn't sugar, salt, grease, and starches, the four main food groups anyway? lol....

Maybe the problem is that there are TOO MANY choices. Perhaps that's why kids grow up thinking the world owes them whatever they want. Pizza day banned. Wow, life's rough, isn't it.

The cafeteria at my kid's school offers ala carte items in addition to the 'daily special' - any given day she could (and usually would) have a cheeseburger for lunch! I've actually had to revert to packing her lunch to keep her off the burgers. I'd think pizza would be prefferable to MOST of the lunches they serve.

"The side vegetables offered..."

I remember during the Reagan administration the powers wanted to have catsup declared a vegetable....that way a mystery meat burger on a plain bun with fries and catsup would constitute meat/grain/2 veggies for a wholesome meal.

A delicious pizza can be made with very little "trans fat," and it doesn't have to cost any more than "regular" pizza. The trans fats are mostly in the cheese and the meat toppings; these can easily be replaced with inexpensive low-fat alternatives. However, I'm not surprised that school administrators have their heads to far up their @sses to understand that.

It might go over a little better, if the school system
took a less heavy handed approach, and offered to
assist interested parents with nutritional
information, instead of imposing dictatorial food
regulations over many families with many diverse
backgrounds.

Jeez, I remember hotdog day like it was yesterday. We got a hotdog and a choice of either regular milk or chocolate milk.
The tray of regular milk was almost always still full after lunch.

tarwater, have ANY American schools heard of something called "Calories"? I'm guessing that they haven't figured out that on a diet like that, most people would become obese, and probably diabetic, in any country in the world.

Whatever happened to good old-fashioned home cooking, with "eating your greens and tomatoes"?

I think instead of banning pizza day they should have a "turn in your PS2 for a free season of football". Or "turn off the tv for a month and get a free A". (kind of like the gun turn-in programs). lol If you ask me, the real problem is that the kids today don't burn off the pizza after school, they sit on their fannys and watch tv or play video games.
