| Surviving Hurricane IKE Posted: 9/16/2008 2:47:21 PM | I have been on PlentyofFish for some time now and have corresponded with many people in the Houston/Galveston area. I would love to hear from some of you that experienced this terrible storm. I have a two story brick home in a lovely Southwest Addition in Houston. The day before the storm I spent all day bringing many statues and large flowering plants inside to my utility room and garage. Some of my pool furniture I stored on one side of my home between my 12 Ft. Wooden Fence. That night around 10:PM I lost power. My daughter had came to stay with me and she and I had prepared for this , I had plenty of candles and a flash light etc. So we had plenty of light and listened as the winds began to blow so loud that we thought a jet plane was circulating my home. My banana trees, peach tree, large gardenia trees were blowing near the ground. Finally around 12:PM we decided to go to bed. So we put ear plugs in and went to sleep. I woke around 6:AM, OMG I looked out to my back yard and pool area to see my fence was completely down on one side and most sections on the other side was gone. My pool was full of debris and all the pool furniture I had stored was all over my yard and some was under the sections of the fence. Before I could look at the front yard, my nice neighbor called to tell me that there was a large tree in my front yard. I went out to see it was not a tree from my yard or my neighbors yard on each side. No one had their fences any longer. They were down all over my neighborhood. Some homes had some roof damage and siding was everywhere. But the most important thing was that no one was injured or killed. In the back I stood up on my jucuzzi and I could see all the way to the end of my road. I have lived here since 2001 and have never seen such distruction. I am a fifth generation Houstonian and I just can't believe my eyes when I view places like Galveston, where I spent my summers and Crystal Beach, where we had a beach home when I grew up. When I married my husband, who now is deceased, we had a large beach house and a 35 Ft. Criss Craft Boat. Also, back then we bought Stingree Marinia in Crystal Beach, I don't know if it is still standing or not. Last month my family and I leased a beach house in Crystal Beach for a week vacation and we had a wonderful time, I don't think that house is standing. I have so many wondrful memories of that area. Many, many of my relatives do not have Power yet and I really feel fortunate, that I now have power I am exhausted from trying to clean my yard, but happy that I have it to clean. Please, if any of you have stories like mine, I hope you will share your experiences.

| Surviving Hurricane IKE Posted: 9/16/2008 3:16:58 PM | The wind was howling as I stood on top of my $80,000 gervasi Jacuzzi in Beverly Hills. It was just so bad that I ordered my staff to uproot my $13,000 sprinkler system to stop the madness!! The chauffer was then forced to drive the Mazeratti down the hill and public park. It was then I decided to pop a couple of valium and drink a bottle of Vive Cliquot...the end.

| Surviving Hurricane IKE Posted: 9/16/2008 3:37:17 PM | | ^^^^^ Did I go to far with the chauffer, or you think the point was made and it parted her hair as it went over her head? | |

| Surviving Hurricane IKE Posted: 9/16/2008 4:15:42 PM | No, don't think you went to far at all. Made me smile.
OT: I am glad I don't live in hurricane country

| Surviving Hurricane IKE Posted: 9/16/2008 4:43:05 PM | Well, I was only trying to describe all the wonderful memories , I experienced in my life in Houston and Galveston. If I sounded like I was bragging you sure got the wrong picture of it, as so many people who have lost so much, are like me, have worked their whole lives to have a better quality of life. You must not appreciate things the way I do.
So, please , overlook the ignorance of the second post....... and share your real stories with me.
Thanks | |

| Surviving Hurricane IKE Posted: 9/16/2008 5:09:26 PM | | Thanks Leavmebe my work here on earth is done. I have family in the Galveston Bay area that were foolish enough to think they could ride it out. Still no word on them. It would seem my southern charm and humor has escaped me in the wake of the OP's post. | |

| Surviving Hurricane IKE Posted: 9/16/2008 6:48:02 PM | You are the one mentioning Money, cost etc. YUK!!! Please put your claws away. I merely meant that I really feel fortunate , after all these years, we never lost anything during these violent hurricane's. Now I am seeing all this terrible distruction of Beach Homes and Boats etc. This was only 3 days ago.
So please, as I asked from the very beginning, if you were in the path of IKE, I would like you to share your story.
Thanks, | |

| Surviving Hurricane IKE Posted: 9/16/2008 6:58:43 PM | | Not all of the area was mandatory evacuation. Some areas were voluntary. And some areas that were not even on the evacuation list got hit hard. No matter where this type of death and destruction happens there will be some who lose it all and some who come out without a scrape. I consider myself blessed to be somewhere in the middle. | |

| Surviving Hurricane IKE Posted: 9/16/2008 10:21:41 PM | I think its called common sense... my parents that live one hour away from corpus, still evacuated their place by wednesay they were at my apt in san antonio (needless to say nothing happened to the area). Material things can be replaced, life CANT. Next time theres a hurricane, hopefully people will take it as a serious threat. | |

| Surviving Hurricane IKE Posted: 9/17/2008 6:56:30 PM | Just FYI for anyone out of the area who may be reading and not be aware--people who were not considered in immenent danger from the worst of the hurricane were told to hole up and stay put...why? so that those who needed to evacuate could do so without the freeways turning into parking lots. Yes, people need to use common sense when deciding to evacuate or not. But for everyone who could have possibly had damage form the storm to evacuate??? Not gonna happen with the population we have here.
Yes, people who stayed in areas like Galveston,Boliver, etc used VERY poor judgement if they didn't get out. But personally, I have compassion for anyone who suffered due to the hurricane--whether they should have evacuated or not.
