| Cold/Flu Season and their remedies... Posted: 9/19/2008 4:14:02 AM | Since this season is quickly settling in I was thinking that sharing our remedies before we're even thinking about being sick might help everyone in the long run.
For a cold, if it's in my chest, i usually use vicks on my chest and back to help being able to breathe. I have lots of home made soups and keep cough candies close if I have a cough with it.
For the flu, i just (used to) eat soda crackers and drink lots of water. It helped with the queasy stomach.

Sore throat: ginger tea (simply steep thinly sliced ginger in hot water for a few minutes, add lemon and honey to taste)
upset stomach: plain congee (with added bits of vegetable and meat as I get better), and setting up camp near the bathroom, vegetating on the couch with my blankie and watching tv

| Cold/Flu Season and their remedies... Posted: 9/19/2008 9:23:46 AM | ginger is a natural stomach cure...in small doses of course....(do not dismiss gingerale here....that is the single free fluid which gives you the agent of ginger and water together)
plain dry bread sticks balance stripped enzymes...which to many bathroom visits can do...just like a hang over when alcohol strips off the bacteria digestion requires...setting back those are not fast depending on how stark the tissue in your body is...water is the next missing ingredient in temple...cuz tissue needs that to produce all the bloodflow to all the lil places there is pink in your skin... and last....apples cooked: already broken down food which helps the temple start up that is the brat diet.......is the saving glory for folks with major digestion problems...goodluck sweetheart...hope your better soon
hold off protien till the temple can balance..than re introduce protiens with how well you feel.

I haven't had a cold in 3 years....and this weekend...I managed to get one...*sigh*.. brutal, and of course I worked this weekend and have to work today as well... I'm thinking I should get to the drug store and LOAD up on some cheap drugs...hehe... a sinutab high sounds great! I have been powering up on vitamin C for the last few days but this time it didn't work to fend off the cold...Hmmm is it feed a cold - starve a fever?
congee? say what?
I need chicken soup....!!!
I want my mommy! | |

| Cold/Flu Season and their remedies... Posted: 9/22/2008 7:37:24 AM | My chicken and rice soup would almost be a congee. LOL Damn it! I added too much rice so it's pretty thick.
Homemade chicken soup when you're down with a cold is the best remedy ever. Light eating and fruits and veggies give you the natural source vitamins you need. Also, tea with honey will help with a sore throat. For a really bad throat infection I'll gargle with salt water or have a couple shots of hard liquor. hehe Also, saline nasal sprays/rinses help big time. You can even get yourself a neti pot if you so wish.
Vitamins are key, but forget about stuff like ColdFX. If you're already sick, it's too late and it won't do anything for you.
Get lots of rest and stay warm. Be sure you're getting at least 8 hours of sleep a night, plus a nap or two if you can. If you really want to sweat it out, but Vicks on your feet with some socks. I tried it a couple times and it really helped sweat out the cold and make me feel better the next day.
I've tried ginger teas when I'm sick with a cold/sore throat and found that it hurt my throat more than anything. So it's a matter of what you find works for you. I love ginger tea when I'm not sick though.
If your chest is congested, take an expectorant cough syrup. You HAVE to get that stuff out of there, so do what you can to help your body. In the winter when I have a really bad chest cold, I'll hug a hot water bottle. (Maybe it's from those mustard packs I got as a kid that makes me think the warmth actually helps...)

| Cold/Flu Season and their remedies... Posted: 9/22/2008 10:03:49 AM | | Congee is essentially rice porridge. Just cook a bunch of rice with excess water, keep on low boil for a good three hours for the rice to break down. The amount of water you use determines how "soupy" it is. Use some chicken stock or bones for flavour. Some chopped up ginger is good too. Toss in bits of meat/veggies/leftovers as desired. It is a very simple meal, and a staple in the poorer areas of China (other parts of Asia too I suppose). | |

| Cold/Flu Season and their remedies... Posted: 9/22/2008 1:10:52 PM | ok....well I am not to sure about the congee thing.....rice porridge....ewww ? I have enough problems eating when I feel like crap....hahahaha...
I got drugs! day drugs ... night drugs... seems to be helping with the sinuses..... Stopped at Miller's Meats and bought a stewing hen..(best for soup) .....the old hen is simmering as we speak.....I usually make home-made noodles with my chicken soup...but that is NOT happening today....will be settling for store bought...haha....
Vicks on the feet? Haven't tried that but I will....lol...
I fired up the humidifier last night too....put it by the bed......cool mist one....I really prefer the steaming one, but they say the cool mist one works just as well....except you can't add an inhalant like vicks....I like Vicks!...(I think it's a psychological thing.. having a cold ..that Vick's smell + hot water bottle + flannel jammies = feeling better... lol)
I have been gargling/rinsing with salt water ....due to a tooth issue....but I am finding the salt is so bad for fluid retention...especially in my hands...in the morning.. and no other good explanation for it...
Neti pot???? ok....now that is ewwwwwww..... I can't even imagine using one of those to pour water up my nose....I have spent my life trying to keep water OUT of my nose...hehehe....(obviously I'm not a champion swimmer!) I just don't get those things...no matter what Oprah says....
My mom used to make me a hot lemon/honey drink ..... might have to try that....even the tea and honey sounds good....!
*sneeze* .....waiting ....*sneeze* .....for the chicken*sneeze* soup.......*sigh*
ARGhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!

| Cold/Flu Season and their remedies... Posted: 9/30/2008 6:23:33 PM | for sinus congestion or (especially) chest congestion:
if you have a vapourizer, add white vinegar into a full basin of water ( i have a 28 hour vapourizer and use 1 1/2 - 2 cups of vinegar). let the vapourizer run while you sleep, in a ventilated room! the room needs to be ventilated not because there's any danger, but only because the smell of vinegar can become overpowering and uncomfortable in a closed room (learned that the hard way ). if you dont have a 28 hour vapourizer, most ppl suggest 1 part vinegar for 5-7 parts water in a vapourizer (tho to me that sounds a little strong).
for whatever reason, it breaks up mucus congestion better than even vicks does. and i cant say for certain it'll treat sinus infections, but (with my chronic sinus infections) i haven't had one since i started using vinegar in my vapourizer at the first sign of congestion. but it would make sense considering vinegar is a natural disinfectant. plus it freshens up the air in your house... which is real nice if you have pets or kids.

| Cold/Flu Season and their remedies... Posted: 10/10/2008 8:12:12 AM | Forget chicken soup,if it's a cold with a suffy nose and sore throat make up a pot of five-alarm chili and just burn it right out. Hot peppers have been proven to be good for you. There's not much you can really do about the flu except to ride it out. My one suggestion is keep some moist wipes by the toilet. Toilet paper can feel like barb wire after a while. | |

| Cold/Flu Season and their remedies... Posted: 11/25/2008 8:27:02 AM | Well...I've come down with a nasty bug and did some research for some of the symptoms I was experiencing.
First...I had really sore ears and every time I swallowed it hurt like hell and popped. So lemon juice to the rescue! Yup, I put a couple drops of lemon juice in my ears and within minutes the swelling went down and the pain stopped. It's been 4 days and my ears still feel great.
Second...My friend told me about it and another confirmed it. Oil of Oregano. I have a nasty sinus infection and chest cold and am taking this. It's apparently well known for killing of bacteria, viruses and yeast.
Many health practitioners now advocate this supplementation as an adjunctive measure to help combat acute and chronic bronchitis, sinusitis, the common cold, acne, rosacea, yeast infections, chronic fatigue, chronic mono and other infectious problems
I'll keep ya posted on if it works for me or not. Everyone I've talked to swears it does.
Oh and the Chinese cold and flu time tea isn't bad either. lol
