AC/DC Black Ice..... is it any good?
Posted: 10/8/2008 12:12:17 AM
The label moved up the release date from Oct 28th to Oct 21st and several advance copies are hitting the market. I had a chance to listen to it tonight.

Not often I get excited to hear something new... and new doesn't exactly define AC/DC?

Most of AC/DC albums sound exactly the same?

The Bon Scott years were the best. Brian Johnson lacks that quirky sense of humor and the song "War Machine" takes itself a bit too seriously? Still a good tune... but......

I was skeptical.... I heard Rock N Rock Train.... and I didn't think much of it?

So I get to listen to Black Ice and I am suprised. It's GOOD! I think it ranks second to Black in Black and rises far higher than any of the other AC DC albums.

What am I suprised about?..... it's still the same recycled Chuck Berry riffs and the same pounding bass and drum style... but they throw in a few curves this time! "Rock and Roll Dream" actually starts out slow? Is this AC DC's first attempt at an actual ballad?

It is actually a beautiful track to listen to. A big suprise coming from the Boogie Boys who HATED when Zeppelin would slow down and whip out the mandolins during their sets? In fact, there is some slide guitar that sounds a heck of lot like riffs from Physical Graffitti in the track " Stormy May Day"?

"Skies on Fire" an ominous track that wouldn't sound out of place on the soundtrack to a Stephen King film.

My favorite rocker and I do mean rocker.... "Spoilin for a Fight"

Decibel has a ZZ Top texas boogie sound to it and Brian growls nicely! His vocal have had a chance to repair themselves after an eight year layoff from the last AC/DC outing.

15 tracks in all. A suprise considering the length of CD's these days?

Black Ice boogies, rocks, and makes your toes tap... and it is the perfect CD to pop into your car player and crank up as you leave work. It's mixed by a master and you hear every tom tom, drum riff, and growl perfectly.

After all the years of hair bands, keyboards, rap, hip hop, fake country and American Idol.... I am thrilled to have a year of great music by Rush, Metallica (finally) and the Granddaddy of riff rock.... AC-DC is finally BACK again.

(They should have called this Back in Blacker)

In fact .... it sounds like guitar solos are back in fashion again?

I can imagine this becoming a favorite with our troops over in Iraq.

Ahead.... an 18 month tour..... whoa.

I would love to see AC/DC live, but they are charging $91 for all seats in Indy; For that, they can kiss the oiliest part of my rear crevace if they think I will pay that much to see them.
Having said that, I look forward to purchasing the album. I am sure the same methodical formula this band has been enacting for years will continue to give killer rock anthems on the new album...

Yeah, I loved Bon too, but he's dead!! Been dead for almost 29 years!! Will remain dead for at least the next 29 years!! Brian Johnson has been a pretty damn good substitute in these past almost 29 years. Someone's ass is gonna be in a sling for leaking the album out before the release date, but hey, it was bound to happen. I have a friend in England who's sent me bootlegs of Bon concerts, and he offered to send me a copy of "Black Ice", but I'll go to Wally World and make them and the band a little richer. Haven't been able to score tickets yet. At $100 a pop after fees, I'm not so sure it's gonna happen anyway. That's two weeks worth of groceries in my house. I've read a few reviews of the album and most of the critics have really liked it. That's good, as a lot of their work has sucked somewhat on several of their albums. Maybe the Bon fans will get to see their man in the afterlife. I'd get drunk with him.

I almost gave up hope. I can remember how disappointed I was after "Fly on the Wall".... "Flick of the Switch" and most of "For Those About to Rock"?

But this is a nice change. I like it. I haven't really listened to "Stiff Upper Lip" all that often to form an opinion about it... in fact, I can't remember much off that album. Now, Ballbreaker I liked.

But Black Ice is more accessible and I keep going back for more listens. That is a mark of a good album.

There does seem to be a trend of bands coming out of hibernation and putting out some decent material. All the old bands are doing it. Whitesnake, Asia, Metallica, Def Leppard, Judas Priest...

All have new albums out... and they don't sound like last hurrahs, but like bands catching their wind and going for the brass ring yet again.

It's a good time to be a fan of classic rock.

Old Gods Never Die... they just make more albums!

Brian Johnson has been constipated almost as long as "The Wildman" Randy Savage..

Bon Scott was the true voice of AC/DC..

and don't forget about the christian AC/DC cover band... AD/BC.. "kindly deeds.. done for free!"

How about Bob River's "Dirty Deeds Done With Sheep"? He's got a vocalist who sounds just like Bon Scott, who I may remind you is STILL DEAD!!!! Jeez people, get over it, he ain't coming back, so make the best of it. I play the Bon albums more too, but I still want to see AC/DC in concert, Bon or no Bon.

AC/DC's best work, of course, were the Bon Scott years. "Powerage" remains a favorite to this very day! Have not had a chance to check out the newest one yet, but do look forward to hearing it.
